Having said that, I am eager for the day the civilized nations develop energy technology that removes the dependence on oil, because then we won't have to play nice with the kid who owns the pool.
It would also require the widespread implementation of a radical change in motor vehicle technology. It's my understanding that a significant portion of the world's oil production goes toward motor vehicle fuel, as opposed to power plants. According to this Institute for Energy Research site, US oil consumption is approximately 70% transportation fuel, 24% industry and manufacturing, almost 5% commercial and residential sectors, and less than 1% electricity generation.
New energy technology would have to include a light weight, high energy density storage medium that could replace gasoline and diesel engines.
