Just an observation:

I am struck by the very high level of courtesy on this board! The people here discuss things with people, whose views are often quite barmy, with respect and kindness.

It shouldn't really be remarkable but it is!

I'm a regular on a conjuror's forum and the standard of debate there is often atrocious, with people being mean and rude to one another even if they're just discussing the best way to palm a playing card.

Here the talk is about talking to dead people and other such nonsense and it's still all polite.

Maybe you simply have fiercer moderators...

Are you really talking about the JREf forum here.

What a load of crap. Now piss off. ;)

What separates this forum from believers' fora is that nobody is banned for their beliefs. Questioning claims is strongly encouraged, no matter what the claims are. Evidence is sought, with no regard to anyone's feelings.

Oh well, you know. If one cannot be polite and courteousness, surely we demean ourselves as rational and caring human beings? It is true that most people on here have barmy views (eg materialism, skepticism etc), but one must be kind and considerate when dealing with those less intelligent than ones self :)

Of course, occasionally we get someone who runs out of arguments for his feeble views, tries to substitute bad language, and is suspended for his repeated and extreme incivility. However, that was not a sceptic, but a crank, who had, as Ian says, demeaned himself. Ironically, it was Ian.

But the sceptics round here have seen this sort of thing as a substitute for argument so often that we all know just what a very, very poor substitute it is. And maybe one day the cranks will learn, too. But don't hold your breath.

I like being rude to people; if you don't like it, then don't discuss anything with me. Better still, put me on ignore.

Unfortunately rossminster, as you can see from this thread, many people on here are not as courteous as they might seem.

I'm not particularly courteous either. The difference between those others who have contributed to this thread, and myself, is that they lack a sense of humour.

But despite not being courteous I do like to see a sensible discussion. Unfortunately many of the skeptics on here are simply interested in ridiculing and mocking non-skeptics and attacking strawmen positions.

Is there a quick way of finding out how many threads are started that *don't* end up in Ian bashing?

Might be worth a gamble on the outcome, anyone fancy a punt?

Well they are certainly less likely to end up like that if Ian stops attacking and insulting others.

How he managed to do it on a thread about courtesy is quite incredible, even for him.

All this within 2 posts!

And the last comment breaks the irony-ometer.

Please confirm you are joking :D

Are you trying to start a war in here? :)

And then, there's Interesting Ian. Incredibly rude.

I’ve never found Interesting Ian rude (perhaps I missed the fun :) ) ….. however I found you and Dr Adaquate rather rude and keen to introduce unnecessary personal insults to those who disagree, that have nothing to do with the topic being debated. Theses attempt to mock often lack the essential ‘ ;) ’

I would never commit such a forum crime as to call you both a pair of arrogant, ignorant, pompous, close minded idiots though …….. I just wouldn’t do that …. It is not right!!! :halo:

:D

I have often laughed at you, but I have never seen you make a joke. Ever.

And --- Ashles has no sense of humor?

He makes me laugh more than you, and he does it deliberately.

And more to the point, you'd have a hard time defending such a pathetic lie.

So feel free to post and run, my pet.

I find the courtesy level here quite high as well, if not a bit stuffy. I used to hang around the StarDestroyer.net boards and the level of civility there is a touch lower than here.
SD.net's boards have a Science, Logic, and Morality (aka SLAM) forum where people discuss like topics. Occasionally, someone pops up with viewpoints such as Ian or Peter or 1inC and they promptly get flamed and mocked by the regulars.
Profanity is abundant and flamewars start up every so often, but it is tolerated so long as there is productive discussion going on. Anyone who stops or never is making decent arguments see themselves get custom titled, sent to the Hall of Shame for mockery by the Four Horsemen and quite possibly eventually banned if they don't clean up.
