I think Labour, Tories and Lib Dems all have a similar problem - they became middle-class parties in a middle-class society, and the middle-class has been hollowed out. Hierarchies have been flattened and a scythe taken to middle-management since that became the MBA mantra in the 80's.
A thorough re-engineering of the British party system is required. Wake me up when it's done ...
