Merged Copaganda/Torturing the English language whenever a cop kills someone

"Quite likely" to be killed? Give me a damn break.

Cops have tens of millions of interactions with civilians each year. The odds of anyone getting killed by a cop, deservedly or not, are extremely low.

One person getting unjustly killed by a cop is one too many.

I'm fine with this sort of thing. It is the perfect response to the copious amount of meritless cop-bashing and stereotyping that is in vogue these days. I don't hear many complaining about that, here or otherwise, of course. It wouldn't be trendy, after all..and where would these people get their affirmation fix?

If anything, we need more of this distortion, in order to achieve equilibrium. I have to admit, it warms my heart when I hear people squeal over it.

What total BS.
Two lies do not make the truth.

There has to be some middle ground between "The cops can do no wrong" and "We need to get rid of the police" which seems to be the only two postions here.
You either the have the police enforcing the laws or you have vigilante every man for himself justice.

For a website devoted to critical thinking, you have a lot of people..on all sides of the political spectrum...who throw out their critical thinking when it involves their political ideology.
Religion has nothing on political ideology when it comes to making people throw out theri critical thinking skills
When I first came on this site, someone said "The politics section of the JREF is where critical thinking and logic go to die". More true today then ever.

Something in the middle would be taking away their implied right to kill people, and making it harder to get away with it when they do.

It is not a implied right, in certain situations the police have the right to take human life. That is true for any police force. Question is what are the circumstances ...which should be narrow.

I agree. It's just i get so much blind dislike of the police, for which I get the feelng the unustified use of lethal force is just an excuse for the dislike.

It seems to me you're saying that cops' having a systemic problem where they keep shooting people for no good reason isn't a good enough reason to dislike them. Tell me then, exactly how many murders would excuse the blind dislike you get?

You have a lot of blind support of cops.
You have a lot of blind hatred of cops.
You have alot of people who cannot take off their ideological blinders.
And so problems never get solved.

Yes yes yes, I get it merely covering up for a fellow officers crimes does not in and of itself make one a bad cop. People who use that behavior as evidence that the vast majority of cops are bad are clearly motivated by blind hatred of cops.

Sarcasm? Sometimes I miss it when it happens in written form.

I watched the 50sec video of the exchange between the Florida cop and the Black driver. In my opinion, there is zero doubt that the cop was not talking about seatbelts when he said ‘this is how you guys get killed out here’. There is zero doubt (again, in my opinion) that he was talking about failing to immediately obey cops as the reason that cops kill people.

Except that the driver is black and the cop is white, there is nothing in the video that makes me believe that the cop was saying ‘this is why we kill Black guys’. In the absence of video showing what the interaction was like before the video started, it seems as likely that the cop would be as aggressive with any citizen that did not immediately bow to his authority regardless of the citizens race.

I deal with the same people cops do, in many similar situations, hundreds of times a day.
Even though I don’t have the limitless powers of unquestionable State authority, if I use such language I go to jail.
Well, I’m white, so I get sent to a mental health facility, but it’s pretty much jail

As far as I know no poster has argued for getting rid of the police in any thread. You seem very ready to assume that every time a poster takes an extreme right view there Has to be a bevy of leftists getting all communist.

In most places the cops have such an entrenched level of corruption that reform is functionally impossible.

It isn't so much getting rid of law enforcement as much as getting rid of the idea of the police as an entity. Breaking up various enforcement and public service obligations, etc. so that the same people doing welfare checks or enforcing traffic safety aren't the same people who are investigating drug cases. Best case is checks and balances on the local level where these departments keep an eye on each other.

We aren't going to address say, the LA Sherriff's dept. having a massive internal gang infestation with a consent decree. Been tried and found wanting. The only way out is to clear the decks and start over.

Why do you hate the blind?

Sadly the police (and it isn't just the USA, we have terrible problems in the UK as well) do prove the adage of one bad apple spoils the barrel.

Cops in the US have been allowed to build a society separate from and superior to the citizenry. Under the horribly flawed ‘qualified immunity’ principle they are often empowered to ignore the constitution and can commit blatant civil rights violations without fear of repercussions. Yesterday, it got worse when the SCOTUS ruled that Miranda violations can no longer be addressed by civil suit.
