Have you an alternative view on how it fell after that point? Grizzly reckons it was a bit like a 'dead man walking'- like it didn't know it should fall yet.

It was too tall and slender to support its own weight, and had been damaged by shock from the main part of the collapse. There's nothing in the least surprising about its behaviour.

If you were correct and it appeared that the newly-exposed core was too slender to support it's own weight would it not buckle at the bottom and fall outwards ? All 800 feet coming nicely into the waiting camera's view ?

Or do you suggest that it too collapsed from the top down ?

Read the bit about "and had been damaged by shock from the main part of the collapse". It would have failed at the weakest point relative to the load applied, which could be just about anywhere.

I'll take what you say under advisement though I think it is weak and renuous at best.

Lurk-mode OFF. . .Vent-mode ON

To this Lurker one of the most maddening aspects of this board (9/11 Conspiracy Theories in particular) is the way the latest sock-puppet (most likely) or newborn 'truther' (least likely) can wander in here and instantly become the center of attention. "Oh, I stumbled onto this place" . . . Yah, right. Sure you did.

For cryin' out loud, people! There hasn't been anything new from the 'truth movement' in almost 8 years. When is this going to stop?

This 'Rewey' character is a perfect example. PNAC? Hijackers not on the flight manifests? Are you kidding me? I note that my calendar indicates that this is indeed the year 2009 but I could have sworn it was circa 2001 when I logged on this morning. This is like deja vu all over again. Six pages in that thread and most of them responses to a dyed-in-the-wool 'truther' who is doing nothing more than parroting the same tired meme that is the foundation of the 'truth movement'. It's shameful.

I know the reasoning behind some of it. It's fun to bait the 'truthers'. It's amusing to watch the cognitive dissonance in action. I'll bet some of you just couldn't resist poking the wasp nest with a stick when you were younger, huh?. Just to see what would happen? Have any of you (you know who you are) even once stopped and thought about the Moderation Team and their workload? Great Ghu, don't you think Politics keeps them busy enough without having to babysit this sub-forum? I've helped moderate message boards in my day and there is no way I would wear that hat here. . .unless there were trollops involved. I have a weakness for trollops-but that's another thread.

Yes, I know. This is the 9/11 Conspiracy Theories sub-forum. What the hell else are you supposed to talk about? And therein lies the problem. A while back there was a poll posted on this sub-forum asking whether or not this place (9/11 CT) should be closed. I voted to close it. This place has ran its course if, indeed, there was ever a need for it in the first place. The Bad Astronomy and Universe Today folks had the right idea when they banned any mention of 9/11 conspiracies on their site. And now Phil Plait is here at JREF. I'm hoping the same thing happens here. Personally, I do not think these people should be given a place here in which to vent their poison. Let them inhabit those forums which encourage. . .um. . .delusional thinking.

And please don't give me any guff about lurkers and fence-sitters. True fence-sitters (though I doubt there are too many of those around) will figure out for themselves pretty quickly that the 'truth movement' is full of bovine excrement. I firmly believe that most people come hard-wired for critical thinking. I feel it's a throwback to our evolutionary past to when we were farther down on the food chain than the position we now enjoy. We needed critical thinking simply to survive. Yes, there is a certain percentage of people out there that lack critical thinking skills (think flat-earthers or arrogant creationists) and for those there is no hope; none whatsoever. They have gone so far down the rabbit-hole as to lose themselves completely (oh, I'm sure some have realized their folly and climbed back out but I've never personally met one). This is sad, true, but also inevitable. We are not all of a piece.

In a perfect world, I would be Emperor of this Universe (JREF) and I, in my Infinite Wisdom and Patient Benevolence, would Cause every single 'truther' (and disdainful creationists and homeopaths and flat-earthers and whatnot) on my Holy Ignore List to be transferred to everybody else's ignore list (making sure to check the little boxes in the user control panel to hide the posts and threads started by those on the Holy Ignore List) and there would finally be peace in the land.

How's that for egotistic?

Sigh. . .sometimes I feel as if I'm the captain of a leaky lifeboat cast endlessly adrift upon a sea of fools.

NEWSFLASH

New York Post 14.07.2009

Some 9/11 families are pushing for a November referendum to create a city commission with subpoena powers to study the attacks, The Post has learned.

Officials are taking the effort seriously, since the group, the New York City Coalition for Accountability Now, submitted 52,000 signatures and is paying the $75,000 cost of counting and verifying them.

Not only are the new batch of moronic ideas on 911 followers bringing nothing new, they offer the same no evidence, pure delusional idea posting spree and are unable to learn or discuss 911.

Interesting, thanks for posting that.

Looking at the website for NYCCAN - I'm not real impressed with their list of questions. It's not a very concise list, and several of the individual questions are borderline-irrelevant.

Either way - it's great to see them making progress.

To tell the truth, Beachnut, you were, if not the inspiration for the section of my rant which you quoted, somewhat the catalyst. I truly meant to throw a 'dirt-dumb' comment somewhere in there as a tip o' the hat but was somewhat pressed for time and simply forgot. Posts by yourself, Ryan Mackey, and Gravy (and others too numerous to list here) will almost guarantee my clicking into a thread.

Rationalists all.

But I do have to respectfully disagree on one point of your post. With my best Leroy Jethro Gibbs-esque gut feeling I still firmly believe that there hasn't been a truly new 9/11 'truther' here in quite some time. At the very least several years. I feel that as the 'truther' ideas are being recycled, as are the 'truthers' themselves.

I have absolutely no hard data to support this gut feeling so the preceding was, of course, In My Own Humble Opinion. However, this, if true, speaks volumes for the kind of 'truth' inherent in their eponymous 'movement'.

Which, of course, comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone with even a passing familiarity with that particular strain of woo.

you do understand the word accountability dont you?

this is a group dedicated to finding out what failures (intel, executive, etc) led up to 9/11 and if people should be held accountable

they also say they want to start from zero and base everything on facts
doesnt sound like too much like your brand of woo
more like where the steering committee left off

You men it's starting to look like another 9/11 Commission ? We must be very careful to ensure that this remains it's own seperate investigation because it may not be the full-scale deep and wide investigation we are demanding. We will want a lot of teeth- probably much more than this will have. Though all investigations are a good thing. It will shake more stuff loose. And you know what they say ?- publicity publicity publicity.

I agree I meant the new batch of failures on 911 are followers in the cult club of "moronic idea on 911". They post failed ideas from years past and support people who make up lies about 911 all without wasting time thinking about it.

Even the thermite chip junk is old the only thing new is it is repackaged by Jones to fool the new set of gullible people too lazy to do their own thinking.
