Confederate flag causing a flap in SC

Even here in Michigan you see it on occasion, but usually then it has the "rebel" connotation, i.e. anti-government, pro-militia.

So I'd say the main meanings are
*Rebellion against the Federal government, "StateProvincial sovereignty."
*Rebelliousness in general.

You often see it in Canada for the reasons listed above. (In Red Deer, Alberta, the local hockey team was the Red Deer Rebels.)

Anybody ever seen Old Glory more prominently displayed along with the rebel flag?

Back in the day, I worked at a "Six Flags" amusement park. One of those flags prominently displayed in the entry plaza was the Confederate battle flag. The United States flag was flown at the left of the row, as etiquette demands.

There are no White Nationalists today that advocate slavery.

No, but the people who created that flag, and are a source of 'pride' for those 'white' people you like, sure did. It was their major defining characteristic.

Now those people who lived at the time didn't know how wrong they were, how evil the cause they championed, and maybe not even how traitorous their theory about government were. Those looking back don't have that excuse.

Quiz for today. Who, exactly, created that flag, the funny aspect ratio version of one of the Confederate battle flags, and for what purpose, and what historical event did they rally around, and what group were they after?

Bonus points for indicating the version of that flag which looked a lot like Space Invaders.

Personally, I am offended because people are acting out odd, and often incorrect, cultural narratives about people they really don't have any connection to.

*sighs

Yet another story about black people bitching over nothing. I hardly see the big deal with this woman flying her flag. Of course I’m from the north and we have very different views on these things. Instead black people need to start whining about why they aren't fixing their neighborhoods and schools instead of looking for old demons and scape goats to blame :(.

Why be offended? This situation deserves nothing more than apathy. I suggest you practice it.

Whoa there, hoss!

It's not uncommon where I live.

And you might see a POW/MIA flag flying just below those two.

Which shows even more cognitive dissonance. Picking both sides of a war?

Why is the south so different from germany in how it treats their history? Probably the long history of believing that fighting do you had the right to own blacks was a good thing to kill for.

Your honor, Exhibit B.

It is an exhibit of my experiences. In my 50 years of on and off living in the South, every person that has displayed the rebel flag has been aware of the provocative nature of the display and has embraced that provocation.

Frankly, it is so obvious that I can't believe that you actually believe that a significant number of persons displaying this symbol do so out of a "southern pride" that is divorced from the south's racist past.

Nope. It is because of, rather than in spite of, this racist past that this symbol is displayed.

Ah, Maurice's. They haven't changed a bit. Was in one last year, and the same crap was still cluttering up the place.

The shame of his continued practice of active racism pales in comparison to the shame that his customers should feel for having traded good money for bad BBQ.

This was the guy who had a line of BBQ sauces in a few supermarkets. The Blacks learned of this, went into the stores and smashed the jars onto the floors.

This is the guy that buys TV time to promote his book as a fine Christmas gift for kids. He publically advocates for a return to segregation, and avows a belief that blacks are less human than caucasians.

I could find no link to a story confirming your assertion that African Americans engaged in protests as you describe. Do you have a link?

Bad BBQ is a crime. Of course, being a northerner, I am more egalitarian in what I consider to be 'BBQ', but it needs to be good, whatever region it hails from.

Far as I know, that flag was created by William Porcher Miles in 1861, but the design was rejected. It was later adopted in a square version, but that flag first showed up in use when Joseph Johnston ordered new flags from the Atlanta Depot in late 1863, specifying that they be rectangular, and they were issued to the Army of Tennessee starting at the end of that year and into 1864. Seperately, a similar flag was used as the Confederate naval jack (flown on ships in port), starting I think in 1863, so that might actually be the first use, but it was a minor one.

There's a bit here, though not all pages are online, and there's an article here.

As far as I know, the purpose was to replace the stars and bars with a new, distinctive and uniform flag to reinspire the troops and symbolize the Confederate Army (or Navy in the case of the naval jack).

Don't know that people rallied around one specific event with that flag, other than the Atlanta campaign in general. If they were "after" anybody, guess I'd have to say General Sherman. In a broader sense, of course, they'd rallied for secession, states' rights and the preservation of slavery in 1861 and were "after" Lincoln, the federal government with its northern power base and the abolitionist interests, but they'd gone through several flags since those days.

Or is that not what I was supposed to answer? ;)

I had to google to see what the Space Invaders symbol looked like. The Georgia State battle flag, when state flags were used as battle flags, had a funny little Greco-Roman arch with banners; is that what you're thinking of? Picture.

If you had a real job, instead of sitting in the military for twenty years, do you think it would be right to for someone to get you fired for your opinions?

I had a real job, in the military. Of course, I worked longer hours than most jobs require, and my job site was occasionally more austere than most work environments, and it was occasionally more dangerous than the average wage-paying job - but what the heck, I wasn't drafted. No body's fault but mine. I have a "real" job now. 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in an office with a secretary. Much, much better pay than before (thank you, thank you, thank you - I know just how lucky I am).

So far as I know, I've never been involved in firing anyone for their opinions. I do still think I was correct in leading an effort to get the product of an openly and active racist off the shelves of a store funded with federal tax dollars.

Let me ask you a straight question. Do you share Bessingers views on race?

As a resident of South Carolina I can say that news of a "flap" is greatly exagerated. It's not been on the local news or in any paper that I have seen. We mostly look at racists with pity and ignore them until they do something monumentally stupid.
