Colin Powell endorses Obama

I'm doing my daily Fox News penance (it's a Buddhist thing - I stepped on a water bug in a previous life and I'm being forced to make up for it, I think) and found it interesting that the story wasn't even mentioned until it was brought up in a cross-exchange between John Sununu and Bill Richardson about two hours into my viewing, and of course it was the Dem who brought it up.

Fox is totally ignoring this. And Sununu's snappy rejoinder? When Richardson said that Powell polls as the most respected man in America, Sununu snapped, "No, his boss George Herbert Walker Bush is the most respected man in America, and he's come out in support of Romney!"

Yeah, you tell 'em, Gov! Former Republican President Endorses Republican Candidate. Great headline, yutz!


EDIT: This just in.... Rumsfeld came out for Obama in an interview with the Greta van Susteren. They gave him five minutes on the topic and Powell's endorsement got forty seconds, and only because Richardson introduced the topic.

Yeah, well, apparently Meat Loaf has come out for Romney. So there. Take that, liberal weenies. :D

Might just be revenge for what Dr. Frank-n-Furter did to him back in the day...

Um... what? You don't mean that Rumsfeld endorsed Obama, do you?

Video of Rumsfeld on van Susteren's show here. I haven't watched all of it but he seems to be attacking Obama pretty harshly.
 
The GOP spin will be that Powell is really a liberal, or Powell is a racist that only is voting for Obama because of race. They will absolutely ignore Powell's objections to the neo-cons that are Romney's advisers.

This is an important endorsement, but not nearly as important as the endorsement Obama received from Romney on Monday night.
 
Powell really is saying he does not like Romney rather than supporting Obama. He is supporting Obama because he is not Romney and that he is "sticking with" Obama. It is for personal reasons, I think. Woodward says that Obama has called Powell to the Oval Office for personal advice many times becuase, frankly, Obma has absolutely no idea how to run a military and he is in need of advice.

To Powell, this is a way to stay in the game whilst also being retired.

If I was Powel, maybe I would make the same choice.

But none of us are Colin Powel or in his place.

Up until now, if you listened to Colin Powel, it would sound like he was not ready to support Obama. This is a sudden change and it is a change in the final days.

Powel is not supporting Romney mostly because he changes is mind. So Powel is not supporting Romeny for what Powel has just done.

It might be worth pointing out that Virginia is home to many military and veterans. Not that this endorsement will necessarily help Obama in the state, but a new PPP poll released this morning has Obama leading by 5 points in Virginia.

The Colin Powell endorsement surely must be the final nail in Romney's coffin. First it was the Putin endorsement, then Chavez, then Castro, now Powell. This surely must put Romney-ites in a funk. Hopeless.

Pathetic. There are undoubtedly some white supremacists and other unsavory characters who are are voting for Romney. Would it be fair to put Romney in the same camp as them?

And I never said the Powell endorsement was the final nail in the coffin or that it would even have any effect at all, far from from it, but Powell has far more political clout here in the U.S. than the names you listed.

Powell was waiting until his support got some airplay and I think he timed it right. If you're right about him "just not liking Romney", then it follows that a likable guy and military hero like John McCain should've gotten the Powell endorsement in 2008. He supported Obama.

I can't wait until Hannity and O'Reilly ignore this on Monday's broadcasts. They go on an on about Obama supporters playing the race card, and over a hundred sites have echoed Sununu's original statement. Basically, the commentary is, "well what do you expect? he's got to support his homey" (not a direct quote, but I'm sure we could find one that's close).

Unfortunately for Romney, only frothing at the mouth newsradio types have your view of things. Most conservatives and almost all moderate Republicans still think of Colin Powell as the guy they wish was running for President. Lying to the UN? Hell, that's a plus for the right wing. Doesn't set him to well with us lefties, but you guys should've thought of that as a shining moment... "Whoooeee... lying to the UN... attaboy, Colin!"

Personally, I think Powell is much more political than anyone gives him credit for. He either timed this for maximum impact or he listened to someone on the Obama team who asked him to let them decide when to release, because the timing is just about perfect. Slow news weekend coming up, and this will be on all the jabberfests on Sunday. It's got prominent play in media outlets that people have heard of, and Romney's been flattening out in those swing states for the past week.

It's not a surprise - he endorsed him against a moderate war hero in 2008, after all. But it was well played. His silence had certain folk hoping he was going to stay out of it or even endorse Romney, I feel. I think this was played masterfully.
