Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

First thing I thought which I watched the ad is "the Right is going to go ape over this".
The funny thing is that English is in no danger of being removed as the National language of the U.S.Almost all immigrants learn it for a good reason: It's the only way you are gonna get ahead in this country. That is a lot more effective way of protecting English then a stupid law making it an "official" language.

But making it an "official" language is the only way some people feel that they can have some control over their destiny, and by extension, control over "their country." Granted, it's only the illusion of being in control. Just as you pointed out, people will find out soon enough that it is in their best interest to at least learn some rudimentary English.

Even English you can do that song incorrectly. I used to know a person who absolutely hated Ray Charles' cut of the song, what he called the "******ized" version. He also ranted that he couldn't enjoy the sounds of Christmas time anymore because of all the "******ized" versions of Christmas carols that were "everywhere", even when sung by white people. I think he was referring to the improvised vocal inflection added to songs by many modern singers; it really grated on him.

I didn't know you were friends with my dad!

The point of the offense taken at these propagandistic ads is that, ala Guns, Germs, and Steel, the traditional US population resents having its language, culture, religion, and, yes, race, being "engulfed" by unending influxes of increasingly chauvinistic and unassimilable aliens,

...who are all drinking Coke, and singing about America.

hummm, MSMBC employee tweets that the righties will be pissed off at a ad celebrating diversity (a Cheerios ad)
Republicans yell, MSNBC apologies and fires employee.
Coke shows ad celebrating diversity.
Righties get pissed off.

So why was the MSNBC employee fired? All he got wrong was which ad it would be.

Actually, the cheerios was old news, wasn't it? I remember reading the right-wing outrage over it here months ago.

Not a fan of pizza, lo mein, pierogies, tacos, shepherd's pie, Beef Wellington, spaghetti, chicken biryani, gelato, sushi, Swedish meatballs, or paella, are you? I won't even mention any different beverages.

Michael

Actually, this is almost a running joke. What is "American food" anyway? BBQ, probably. And fast food.

'Hey kids! Did you know that America is a melting pot, made up of... what? Oh, sorry. I meant, America is a strictly English speaking, Christian nation made up of homogeneous peoples'. Yeah, that is America. This sort of dog-whistle racist and xenophobic b.s. is why so many people in my small social sphere are vexed as to how conservatives still attract voters/viewers/listeners.

I'll personally give 10 internet points to anyone who can post a comment somewhere about the commercial, using the phrase "homogeneous peoples" in such a way to provoke at least one angry reply ranting about the gay agenda. :D

And then remind them the pledge of alleigiance was written by a Christian Socialist.
But, but that can't be ; surely it's as American as apple pie, the White House, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Garand rifle, "God Bless America", jeans, the 'Stars and Stripes', American football, hot dogs and the shopping mall.

That is homo-genius!:D

To the degree these disparate cultures are bringing scientific and artistic principles, sure. To the degree they're bringing different costumes and foods, not so much.

But costumes and foods don't really hurt anything, either.

(1) Not all change is good, and we can sometimes choose between which changes we would like to have and which we wouldn't.
Yes, but it's better if that choice is made with an actual, sound reason.
(2) Language is the primary determinant of statehood. A French America would be thinking differently than an English one.

That's kind of the point, isn't it? If we all thought alike, then we'd all tend to look at things the same way. Talk about stiffling invention...

Not to meniton, I rather thought geography was the main determinant of statehood. I know more people that speak other languages yet are American, than I do people that are American yet don't live in America.

Fortune cookies are American too, as well as Taco Bell.

So is the Little Dutch Boy. You know, the one that stuck his finger in the hole in the dike and saved Holland?

The Dutch had to finally give up and erect a statue honoring the Little Dutch Boy because so many Americans asked about the legend. It's apparently a wholly American story.

In Canada... Only one thing has threatened to rip us apart.... Different languages.

Heh. Not quite language related, but close. Check out "Zombie Panic in Quebec".

As if that's not bad enough, then there's this:

Proof positive that stupid can be found pretty much everywhere.

Next year I want to Coke do a commercial with Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" sung using only Native American, Hawaiian and Alaska Native languages.
