Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

I think my 15 year old son summed it up pretty well

After the commercial ...

Me: "I bet there are going to be protests and calls for a boycott because of that commercial"

My son (somewhat perplexed): "Why?"

Me: "Good question, some people probably think showing people with different skin colors singing that song in other languages is somehow un-American - they'll probably work illegal immigration in there somehow too"

My Son: "That's Dumb"

If these outraged conservatives can't drink Coke after this ad, and they can't drink Pepsi because of their pro-gay rights posture, what is left? Mr. Pibb?

What I find hilarious is that, based on his body of work, Travis spends faaar more time tracking conservative opinion than I do.

I think I waste more time per day reading Travis threads, than I do reading conservative opinion.

Have you also noticed that atheists talk more about God than theists do?

You took the words right out of my mouth. What is this imaginary "Classical Culture"? Which particular timeslice of the evolving American Dream does it comprise?
I thought CplFerro mean Classical Greek culture.

With all THAT implies :D

Not a fan of pizza, lo mein, pierogies, tacos, shepherd's pie, Beef Wellington, spaghetti, chicken biryani, gelato, sushi, Swedish meatballs, or paella, are you? I won't even mention any different beverages.

French fries, hamburgers.............. In fact what exactly is "American" food?

Sodastream.

What, if any language is the official language of the USA? This lot are presently campaigning for their chosen language to the official one

http://www.us-english.org/

".....we hope you will join us in our efforts to make English the official language of the United States!"

The USA does not have an official language. So Coke are using many of the most commonly spoken languages.

First thing I thought which I watched the ad is "the Right is going to go ape over this".
The funny thing is that English is in no danger of being removed as the National language of the U.S.Almost all immigrants learn it for a good reason: It's the only way you are gonna get ahead in this country. That is a lot more effective way of protecting English then a stupid law making it an "official" language.

Dear Travis,

You're implying that "diversity" made the US the world power that it was and is increasingly no longer. Thank Alexander Hamilton's American System of economics for that. A polyglot hodgepodge populace had nothing to do with America's "power and riches".

The point of the offense taken at these propagandistic ads is that, ala Guns, Germs, and Steel, the traditional US population resents having its language, culture, religion, and, yes, race, being "engulfed" by unending influxes of increasingly chauvinistic and unassimilable aliens, to the point where the original culture is hollowed out and erased.

The solution is to step up to Classical culture, which is universal anyway, and encourages rational and beautiful thinking in the bargain so that the different competing groups in the country won't be at each other's throats. I doubt Glenn Beck or any of the others you quoted grok the Schiller Institute to know what is the best of what is worth defending, and so instead slide into debased chauvinism themselves.

Cpl Ferro

Just have to point out that Cpl Ferro is a huge supporter of Lyndon LaRouche and the Schiller Institute is a propaganda organ for Lyndon the crackpot.
Nuff said on that.....

You'll take my gyro out of my cold dead hands.

French fries, hamburgers.............. In fact what exactly is "American" food?

Sodastream.

But Sodastream is an Isreali company, and they reject Jesus...........

I thought the ad was a little overkill and could have used a little subtlety, but that is besided the point.

That's the beauty of living in America: all these disparate items, or at least portions of them, and absorbed into the culture and re-invented as "American." And even if they aren't fully assimilated, they're at least available for you to try. That's beautiful...and tasty.

Michael

Where on earth does this idea come from that original culture means English speaking and white?

Just how far back do we have to go to find this monochromatic paradise of yours?

About 50 years - "Leave It to Beaver" was a documentary, didn't ya know?
