CNN Doxxes a gif maker

Not necessarily with serious intent, but I do think violence is on the mind of the person creating such a thing.

I think that's needlessly literal, though. Do you think wrestling was on their mind as well? Representations often aren't meant literally, and I think it's simplistic to think that it was, especially since the guy is an admitted troll.

I think he believed he was "owning" CNN by depicting them as being beaten up by Donald Trump. The "beaten up by Trump" part is the operating factor here. That's violent in and of itself.

Well that would make for an interesting thread in and of itself: "what constitutes violence?"

That was a stupid scenario to show you how ridiculous the idea was. For some reason you think it's entirely feasible.

It is, and not as onerous as you claim.

It's very accurate. They talk about different aspect ratios, different colours, content, sound, etc. and we've been over the different resolution and FPS here, and somehow you and they believe that this is something relatively easy to fix.

  • How many FPS is the original gif ?
  • How many FPS is the tweet ?
  • What color depth is the tweet ?
  • Where is a link to the original gif ?

If you can answer those questions, we can actually discuss accuracy.

So far, it's been you simply asserting there is more fps/resolution/fluidity/colors based on your marvelous powers of observation.

You have backed none of it up with actual details from either a gif or mp4.

Well, no, not without additional content from another video (let's call this other source 'Q' ;) ). The problem is that this Q would be more complete anyway, so why would one need the GIF in the first place?
Q ... :)

Because the person who saw the gif doesn't know how to make a floating cnn on a video.

CNN is the biased claimant in this story, and Buzzfeed is generally unreliable, so I'd choose my allies more carefully if I were you.
Buzzfeed may be a generally ****** source, but you haven't pointed out why they are wrong in this case.

See if you can provide answers to my above questions, and we'll see if we can move this forward.

I was about to post that BuzzFeed link.

Notice in the apparent screen shot of HanAssholeSolo's original Reddit post, that the gif is larger and has the WWE logo in it.

That means, it would seem, that the gif we've seen is not the original. The one that was posted in this thread is apparently a cropped (at least) version.

Ah, that's interesting. I assumed the repost on reddit was of the original GIF. Now, with that info I went looking for an archived version of the original thread, and found it here at archive.org, including the original GIF.

Now, from that, the sound is still missing, but while it's only ten seconds long, all the scenes of the Trump video are there. It has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and a resolution of 480x270, while the Trump video has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 1280x720.

So while they are still two very different medias, it is now pretty clear that the Trump video was made from the GIF, because the effort to do that has sunk rapidly. Seems someone took the upper left region of the GIF, cropping out the WWE logo, added sound and looped some scenes, and put on the FNN logo at the end. All into an mp4 container with higher resolution and FPS.

I'm sure the Expert could do that in less than an hour after school.

Nice job. That's all I would need to make the Trump video with a few open source tools.

Now that it's been shown that CNN were right, will people who mistrust them trust them more?

no

lolz, CNN was not right, because Trump did not get the video from the doxxee, as we have already established, therefore KFILE's reserving rights to out the doxxee based on his other bad posts is as reprehensible as it ever was

lolz, here is what CNN said:

Reddit user "HanA**holeSolo" first shared the GIF last Wednesday of Trump pummeling a wrestler with CNN's logo imposed on his face. CNN could find no earlier instance of the GIF. The GIF was later edited into a video with sound and tweeted by the President on Sunday.

CNN was right m'k ??

It absolutely is. The only way to think that the GIF (the one we had when the discussion took place) could be converted to the larger video would be to believe in computer magic. Now, the larger GIF, which we no longer have, might work. If it was larger, in a better state, complete and with half-decent FPS, all you would really need is to add sound (from another source, again; this is getting complicated) and perhaps crop the thing. Now, that wouldn't be complicated to do. But the smaller GIF? Practically impossible.

So you're asking more accuracy from me than from other sources. Odd, but not surprising. Woo-woos often ask for higher standards from their critics than from their own sources, so it's not surprising that non-woos would do the same for their own pet conclusions.

You've been shown that the resolution wasn't the same, for example. You've not addressed that at all.

I hoped you'd like it.

I have, actually, except if the GIF we had via CE's link was not the actual original GIF. If that's the case, then you and I and they were all correct: they had "Q" and used it, because they couldn't do that video from the smaller GIF.

Exactly. The whole reason for CNN to go after the guy is to smear Trump with this alt-right stuff, and that connection is still as indirect as it has been before. We just don't have to speculate about an unknown common origin of the two anymore.

How about the different resolutions, and the pixellated appearance of the GIF? Is that really the original?

Wait, if the larger GIF was made by Han (stop calling him the Doxxee, he wasn't doxxed) then didn't Trump get it from him, even indirectly?

I'm asking YOU because I'm having a discussion with YOU.

YOU made claims. I asked YOU to back them up.

I was not having a discussion with CNN or buzzfeed, nor was I in a position to ask THEM.

But yeah, woo-woo. You can't help but personalize the discussion.

I wasn't shown that. Post # ?

"CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change."

#cnnblackmail, m'kay??

/man reading that "apology" it sounds like Reek apologizing to Ramsey Bolton.

KFILE's reserving rights to out the doxxee based on his other bad posts is as reprehensible as it ever was

Did anyone ever explain upthread why exactly it is morally reprehensible to correctly attribute a work of political satire to its original creator?

I cannot seem to find that bit in any extant guide to journalistic ethics.

YOU made claims. I asked YOU to back them up.

I was not having a discussion with CNN or buzzfeed, nor was I in a position to ask THEM.

And yet you believe them without question. Apparently their claim doesn't need to be justified.

But yeah, woo-woo. You can't help but personalize the discussion.

Perhaps if you took more time to read what I actually said, you'd see I didn't call you a woo-woo. In fact I specifically called you a non-woo.

I wasn't shown that. Post # ?

747 and 806.

I wouldn't bother. He keeps lying about the guy getting doxxed when it's absolutely clear that he wasn't. It seems lying is all he's got.
