Winston Churchill ordered a cover up of a reported close encounter between an RAF aircraft and a UFO during the Second World War because it would create "mass panic", accordingly to newly-released files.

The tale is told in newly declassified Ministry of Defence UFO files put online by the National Archives.

Allegations of the cover-up emerged when the man, from Leicester, wrote to the Government in 1999 trying to find out more about the incident.

He described how his grandfather, who served with the RAF in the war, was present when Churchill and US General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter.

Churchill description of a fanatic is so freaking applicable to Conspiracy Freaks:

"A Fanatic is somebody who can't change his mind and won't change the subject".
 
He claims Churchill wanted it coverred up to stop 'mass panic' and to avoid problems with religion..

As if the war wasn't enough to cause panic.

BBC Breakfast news had some 'Ufologist' on to talk about it, I didn't catch his name but he made claims that some ex Air Marshall and Equery to the Queen had told him that he met an alien face to face and chatted for two hours, they were introduced by some un-named General.

The BBC Presenter quickly moved on to the next item :)

Which was my first thought. The article totally lacks any context. At what stage of the war was the object seen etc etc.

It could simply have been an early sightng of a V1 before anyone knew what they were, or ME263. Both of which would not have fit any known profile of German equipment

And provided no support other than hearsay. "Single sourced" is the term I'm looking at here. But it will pass into the Babylon UFO Hall of Fame anyway and in a year or so someone will be swearing WSC mentioned UFOs in his writings and speeches.

I guess the other question is, why would Ike and Churchill be having that conversation in front of some RAF schmuck anyway
 
The prevailing UFOs encountered by WW2 pilots were the so-called 'foo fighters'. They showed up as balls of light flying very close to wing-tips, sometimes also along trailing edges. They were from a few inches to a couple of feet in diameter.

They were not supposed to be alien craft, but there was some suspicion that they were some part of an enemy weapon system. It was later discovered that axis pilot had also observed them.

The explanation for the phenomenon is that planes got charged with static electricity. Once static dischargers (the small pins or ticklers you see on trailing edges of virtually all planes to-day) were implemented, the foo fighters were no longer observed.

- That authorities of the time routinely suppressed information that was considered 'not good for the morale'.

Not exactly news. And they still do, but with a more independent press, they have more difficulty getting away with it.

Why would Churchill think it was an alien spaceship rather than a secret weapon of some kind?

None of it makes sense.

I personally wouldn't care if he was. Without corroboration it's all hot air. And we don't even have HIS words.
