A group of gay Republicans took out a full-page ad in Thursday’s New York Times, lambasting potential defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel for opposing an ambassador’s nomination in 1998 because he was “openly, aggressively gay.”

If Obama is going to nominate him, maybe he should do it soon.

Not to defend or excuse his remarks, but the country as a whole has come a long way on gay rights in the last 14 years. My own position has evolved considerably in that time span. Perhaps Hagel's position has evolved too.

Mine hasn't evolved. Been a libertarian a lot longer than 14 years. One hopes for Hagel welcome to the club, but somehow had this been a Republican president nominating him, the outrage would be even larger. Try and look in the mirror and tell yourself it wouldn't.

Standard operating procedure for at least two decades. SNL had a joke once where Dana Carvey as Bush, Sr., said "Gonna take a poll. Find out what I think.", and Clinton basically invented the term "trial balloon".

"Anti-semite," in this context, is anyone who slightly deviates from the GOP's view of Israel's security needs. Never mind that a large portion of the Israeli polity, from the Knesset to major newspapers, also diverge from that view, and by the same logic are anti-semites.

Ambassador Bhadrakumar allows himself to get a bit carried away and dream of a "real" Obama we haven't yet seen since he's President. I'll believe it when I see it. Anyway, good on him for not caving in to the neo-con pressure.
