Charlie Sheen thinks Being Sober is boring.....

I do hate baseball. But certainly you agree that "boring" is not something that can be objectively measured?

Or he feels it is perfect with it. Who are you to say otherwise?

Well, I guess everybody can preface every post they ever make with "in my opinion", but it's fairly obvious that everything everybody says is generally their opinion. I can't see why you want me alone to always make the distinction in my posts, or only post incontrovertibly factual matters. I have as much right to comment on the ridiculous stupidity of Emilio Estevez's less-talented and less-handsome brother as anybody.

Who are you to suggest I don't?

Fair enough.

Also, why on earth is Charlie Sheen getting parts and Emilio isn't? Is everyone else in Hollywood on drugs also?

I don't think the show is any worse than a lot of sitcoms. It has it's moments. My mom loves it though.

No, but then a lot of sitcoms are basically the same crap perpetually recycled anyway. OMG, a joke about how men are different from women! Hilarious! Oooh, how about a shrewish wife and a goofball husband, what a wacky pairing that would make! Let's run it for twenty years, then have a spinoff!

Yeah, my mom likes it, too. I suspect it's because she has a thing for Sheen but it's likely subconscious because she was brought up in a repressive era and can't admit things like that to herself. She also loved "Remington Steele" very much--she has a thing for dark-haired guys. Heck, I remember when I was a kid she'd do housework and stuff while her soaps were on, but she'd stop dusting and pay attention to Days of Our Lives whenever Roman or Bo was on. And As the World Turns she liked Caleb (but then, so did I. Lily was crazy to prefer Holden).

I'm so going to bring this up next Xmas, that should add some interest to the conversation.

A percentage of your tax dollars have contributed to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians caught in cross fire and friendly fire most likely. All his money? There are multiple avenues and producers in the market for illicit drugs, some with nothing to do with the cartels. Pharmaceutics, home grown pot operations, you're just generalizing and you're splitting hairs and seizing on the worse possible scenario here to consider that a valid criticism in this case worth mentioning.

The man burned out his pleasure centers. I don't think anyone is glorifying him or thinking he's cool beyond some rebellious teenagers.

He's made himself a target I suppose, but come on.

Not to mention that the cartels were filling a vacuum created by a government policy that basically invites criminal gangs to capitalize on a market that will never go away - and a bureaucracy that sustains itself on the criminalization of drugs just as much as the cartels do.

So in a sense, Sheen's drug money is also part of the dynamic that builds more prisons and hires more cops.

So isn't it really an economic stimulus that Sheen is helping ensure continues in this troubled economic time?

More prison guards and more cops means more tax revenue for the government and more money going to the local economy.

Yeah, that's right, rationalize it, geniuses. It's all my fault for giving taxes to the gubbermint, which is...yeah, right...profiting off the drug trade. Because prisons are lucrative propositions. Never mind the fact that they're not really lucrative propositions. Reality doesn't count. After all, if it weren't for reality, we wouldn't even need the drugs, would we. So, actually, it's all reality's fault, because everything else is just part of the reality thing we all hate because it's boring.

Thank both of you for your services as poster boys. I knew I could count on you.

It is certainly partly the fault of every drug prohibitionist in the USA that such horrific crime is going on in Mexico. The drug market is clearly never going to go away. It could be met by legitimate businessmen. But drug prohibitionists have so graciously allowed Mexican thugs to become rich beyond belief. I am quite sure they are literally the last ones who would want drugs to be legalized in the USA.

Personally, I suspect that the truth isn't that sobriety is boring for Charlie Sheen, but that being Charlie Sheen is boring for Charlie Sheen. It's possible to have too much wealth and fame--just look at the lives famous people often lead. How many of them are happy? I know most of us envy things like wealth and fame and all that glamour, but seriously, the people who have all that frequently seem to be utterly miserable.

How much is success worth if you hate being you?

I'm willing to give it a try.

Why should i assume that people are unhappy because of their success?

Huh, I never realized the "free to destroy themselves" argument was so popular. We involuntarily hospitalize people every day, and I'm glad that we do.

Why should i assume that people are unhappy because of their success?

I didn't say that. I said that Charlie Sheen seems pretty unhappy, and it might well be because of his success.

I'm one of those people who assumes that self-destructive behavior is evidence of unhappiness, if not actual insanity.

If you look at the list of Disney tragics, a big problem for 'stars' and entertainers is that they experience a huge rush when performing. As a minor league entertainer (and I mean bottom of the barrel, just doing it beause it's better than watching TV minor), the experience of being out there and having people watch you does get you 'high'. The brain then wants more, but the show is over. What do you do then? Come down gracefully or keep up the high artificially? A lot of performers go for the artificial option.

That's just nonsense. Steven Spielberg seems to being doing fine. Tom Hanks has never come off as being unhappy while also being super rich and successful. Hell, how about Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez? Emilio was much bigger in the 80s than his brother and I don't remember him making tabloid headlines for being a jerk. There are many more rich, successful people who, even when they're in the media business, manage not to blow themselves up or even make appearances in the tabloids for mildly bad behavior.

The people who "seem to be utterly miserable" just happen - entirely coincidentally, I'm sure - to be the ones who do make frequent appearances in the media based on their bad/self-destructive behavior.

On the flip side, being sober thinks Charlie Sheen is boring.

I have yet to be able to stand more than ten minutes of anything he has done besides Hot-Shots , while not inebriated so badly that i cannot exactly tell what is on the television.

I cemented my opinion the day we were shown a scene for school ( as kind of a joking example of non professionalism in a pharmacy. ). Sheen walked around confused, with a hint of anger, and within seconds i looked to a friend and said " Getting tampons for a girlfriend, she is sick, and he is not going to know the size. " as the joke matured this was exactly the case. ( i would include as well, my commentary that the pharmacist was going to be snarky to him, but that was kind of a given, considering we were watching it in school. )

Watching it, ( which i have had to do on about a dozen or so occasions, usually at the request of someone i am dating. ), i feel like i am hearing someone tell a joke , that guy who always ***** up and says the punchline first, but then expects you to sit through the joke when he tells it right.
