Charlie Rangel: Bring back the draft

The draft would not demonstrate to young people that everyone must do his or her fair share. It is more likely to convince them that the demand for sacrifice is made mainly on those too poor to avoid it. The volunteer force in Iraq has been a truer cross section of America than the force created under the last draft, which ended in 1973, before the end of the Vietnam War. The wealthy and well-connected could get deferments then or assignments to safe alternatives, and many did. While there are plenty of underprivileged in the current force, at least they are there by their own choosing.

I guess Rangel didn’t stop to consider the glaring example of the above demonstrated by George H.W. Bush where his own son was concerned.
 
Just remember. You're not just saying something bad about W, you're slandering everyone who served in the National Guard during the Vietnam war.

The spelling of herpes is not really a measure of redneck values but support for tradition, convention, officialdom, and conservative interpretation is.

The Rangel-draft seems to be the democratic symbolic legislation version of the flag amendment. Something that won't pass that gets brought up for symbolic/provocative purposes.

Bush and company led us to war on falsified or incorrect evidence. They have not apologized. They deserve to be out.

It's really not even that. The flag amendment gets within a few votes of actually passing when the Republicans are in control, albeit most are doing it for political reasons rather than a deep felt sense of protecting the flag.

This is the political equivalent of voting in rape. Virtually none of the Democrats want to be associated with it from what I can tell. It might be Rangel's version of the flag amendment, but it is not the Democrat's version.

Don't confuse a single Democrat being an idiot with the whole Democratic party (at least not in this case :p).

Except there are people who actually support the Republican symbolic legislation. What the Hell is the point of Rangel's legislation? Let's alienate everyone?

A married E1, with less than four months, gets 1300 a month in base pay plus another (on average) 1000 a month in BAH. Roughly 27,500 annually.
