Catholic Speaker of the House fires Catholic Priest for his invocation

I have been seeing a lot about this on twitter.

Ryan, supposedly a Catholic, got mad at the chaplain, a Jesuit catholic priest, because he had the audacity to give an invocation/sermon/whatever you want to call his speech about doing things like, helping the poor.

That was unacceptable to the Speaker, so he sacked the guy.

Apparently, Ryan doesn't like the Jesuit message of service to the poor (see also: the Pope).

When Boehner quit the Speaker role, I argued (and I still contend) that it was because the Pope got to him. Recall how he cried when listening to the Pope talk. I still believe that it moved him to the point where his conscience got the best of him. His response was to quit.

Ryan hears the message and instead of taking it to heart, fires the priest. Because, you know, where do Catholic priests come off interfering with the Randian policies?

People are complaining about how Ryan is not a good Catholic and all that (No True Catholic, of course). I disagree. From what I see, Ryan's actions and attitude are perfectly consistent with those for the Catholics I know.

That's a pretty harsh characterization of Catholics in general.

In situations like this I prefer to focus my criticism on the individual. Paul Ryan is an arrogant douchebag. There is no doubt about it.

Good Catholics send their kids to Jesuit schools thinking it will give them a good grounding in Catholicism. Heck, the pope is a Jesuit. Unfortunately, the Jesuits are really big on logic and science and service to the poor, so the minority who remain Catholic come out bleeding heart liberals.

I laughed out loud when our youth minister was warning parents that just because your kids are going to a Catholic high school doesn't mean they will stick with the church. A good Jesuit education is practically a vaccination against superstition and excessive greed.

Conroy’s own resignation announcement stated that it was done at Ryan’s request.

“As you have requested, I hereby offer my resignation as the 60th Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives,” the April 15 letter to Ryan, obtained by The Hill, states.
Through his office, Conroy, who has served as chaplain since 2011, declined to comment on Thursday. His resignation is effective May 24.

Four different sources — two from each party — say Conroy was told that he must retire or that he would be dismissed.

After reading that, what's your next complaint ? Still hungry from having to be spoon fed ?

The Hill: House chaplain forced out by Ryan

A Democratic lawmaker said that the Speaker took issue with a prayer on the House floor that could have been perceived as being critical of the GOP tax-cut bill.

On Nov. 6 — the first day of the markup on the GOP's tax bill — Conroy in a prayer urged lawmakers to ensure the legislation did not exacerbate the nation's gaping class disparities.

"May all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle," Conroy said at the time. "May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans."

A senior GOP aide said Conroy’s exit “was not because of any particular prayer."

And the usual two-reality discussion continues with Ryan's office claiming Pelosi didn't object and Pelosi's office saying she did indeed object.

Ryan had an excuse:

A second Democratic aide said Conroy’s ouster was “largely driven by a speech on the tax bill that the Speaker didn't like.” But the source also offered a second reason.

“Some of the more conservative evangelical Republicans didn't like that the Father had invited a Muslim person to give the opening prayer,” the source said.

Their sources are fine, as far as they go. I was expecting you to provide your own sources, supporting not only your report of the what, but also your analysis as to why. And no, I'm not going to chase down whatever sources I imagine you might have used to inform your conclusion. Nor do I consider sources that other people chased down to support their own conclusions as carrying your burden of proof for you. If you have a case to make, make it yourself. Don't ask me to make it for you, or rely on other people trying to make a similar case for you to ride the coattails of.
