Cancel culture IRL

A lot of people are claiming it is new. That it’s something of modern times. A bit like you are saying.

Whipping up “instant” mobs is what pressure groups have always done. You think those complaining about Tom and Jerry cartoons coincidentally all wrote to the BBC board the same day?

Or the fear about D&D in the 70's and 80's? The complaints from religious groups about Harry Potter?

Conservative and/or religious groups have been doing this for as long as I remember. But while they didn't decry 'CANCEL CULTURE!!1!!' when it was
Colin Kaepernick, now they are concerned because a small handful of potentially racist books a publisher decided to no longer print, and outrage over the genitals of a plastic potato.

The term is something new and the use of social media is something ( relatively ) new. The term just happens to be in vogue this year, it might go away and be replaced by something else like how the term call out culture was replaced with cancel culture.

Were the Tom and Jerry complaints a result of social media pressure and if so, how long did the campaign last ?

Glad to see you've come around and acknowledged that Kazuo Ishiguro is speaking the truth. Just when I was beginning to think there's no hope and all is lost.

Yep, this is exactly how it worked with climate change. Random people on the internet just proclaiming it “the truth” because of something they read in a tabloid.

I don't know offhand but if I were looking to capitalize on cancel culture I'd put my money into Pink Pearl erasers or White Out.

I think you should invest your life savings into both. Keep us posted on how that goes for you.

Potato Head wasn't cancel culture. That was either a screw up or a masterful troll by Hasboro's publicity department. Seuss wasn't cancel culture

The decision to cease publication and sales of the books was made last year after months of discussion with teachers, academics and a "panel of experts," the company told AP.

Are you going to let melting down conservatives redefine this term for you ?

The term is in vogue because the Right Wing Propaganda Machine is weaponizing it for their own cynical agenda. And I’m sure they appreciate all the water you’ve been carrying for them.

…snip…

Yes and went on for a good 2 decades that I can remember.

Dr Who was also a popular target for the social media denizens of their time.

I don't invest. Investing is a tool of the bourgeois capitalist pigdog scum investor class who grow fat and rich off the labours of an exploited lower class.

Of course they weren't. Doesn't stop utter idiots from screaming 'CANCEL CULTURE!'

The snowflake conservatives are the ones pushing, and defining cancel culture.

We;re making more progress. :) An admission that it exists

Exactly how have I been "carrying water" for them ?

It’s weird that you reserve the exclusive right to determine what is and what isn’t “cancel culture”. There are a lot of people who believe that Mr. Potato Head and Dr. Seuss have been cancelled. Who are you to deny them their truth?

It reminds me of this argument:

“I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Two decades, wow. That's about how long Twitter has existed.

The more I think about it, the conservatives don't really care about obscure Dr Seuss books, agreed? This is just an extension of the slippery slope argument. Kind of like going ape **** over 2A infringements for fear of an eventual gun grab. Combined with the inevitable Us v Them polarizing, I guess this is just our new War on Xmas normal. Think I'm gonna stay off that Quixotic battleground and stay focused on common ground. The embracing of extremism is well past counterproductive and marching bravely into stupid.

I'm not reserving that right, I'm going off the already existing definitions of cancel culture. It's really not that difficult.

The amount of straw in this thread is really messing with my allergies.

I know, right?
:boggled: Your position ends up implying that persecution, harassment, and retaliation for beliefs are acceptable social interactions, as long as their done by the "right" people. Is that really your stance on this topic?

Human have always done this, so it's no big deal. Not worth talking about.

You know what else isn't new? Racism, sexism, murder, slavery, thievery... Yep, it's nothing new, why would we ever bother to spend any time talking about those things and the negative impact they have on people and society as a whole?
