Cancel culture IRL

Surely. Harry Potter stuff has had far more cancel attempts for “witchcraft” etc from conservatives over the years
Oh yes. The books were banned/removed from numerous schools and public libraries by the right-wing kooks.

You're right - it had far more *attempts* at cancellation for witchcraft. This has *accomplished* what those prior attempts did not.

Tongue-in-cheek: If you can't convince the puritans to burn her for a witch, switch tactics and get the catholics to burn her for a jew instead.

If you choose to allow conservative activists to redefine terms for you, I won't try to stop you. Don't expect anyone else to play along, though.

Millions of people are playing along, and that makes it an important component in the discussion.

Using one word to describe the wider array of social consequences is foolish. It's begging the question that these varieties of social consequences are more closely related than they are.

What? The term "begging the question" used correctly!!!

Not really. The religious right failed to get her cancelled, the Trannish Inquisition has also failed. JK Rowling's popularity appears to be immortal.

Globally? In under a day?

Oscar Pistorius (athletics hero to murder suspect in less than a day)

Orenthal Simpson(Ex-Football Star to cold blooded killer in a day)

Aaron Hernandez (Top NFL tight end to prime suspect in the murder of another player in the space os 24 hours)

Dominique Strauss-Kahn (French politician and former managing director of the IMF to rape suspect in a day)

Any more questions?

That's not cancel culture.

You don't have to actually be arrested for a crime and have it reported widely in the media to initiate a cancel culture reaction. All that's needed is enough of the easily outraged to form critical mass and initiate a social media meltdown

Okay, so a couple million Fox News viewers are going to learn the phrase "cancel culture" in a way that applies solely to cancellations performed by progressives against conservatives. They might sprain their mental muscles when trying to understand phrases like "conservative cancel culture" whenever they see it in print. The rest of us, though, should be able to understand that the process of trying to get people in power to withdraw support from folks like the Dixie Chicks or Valentina Azarova—because of their unacceptable political views—involves using the same tactics for similar reasons, even though it is coming from the right and being used against the left rather than the other way about. Just b/c the right wing media machine has adopted this phrase as their new scary buzzword doesn't mean they own it now.

ETA: I would not let Fox News viewership redefine "Critical Race Theory" for similar reasons.

Well at least you understand why we feel it’s worth being a part of the discussion. The right wing media machine is powerful enough that it may even become the prevailing narrative.

I'd say Fox News, OAN, and all the news-flavored nuttery further to the right of those two, e.g. Infowars.

Just one: Why did you pick major crimes instead of badly phrased jokes or similarly minor infractions?

1. Because "badly phrased jokes or similarly minor infractions" are almost impossible to get a decent Google result on, but of course, you already knew that, and

2. ST said "There's nothing new about people becoming social pariahs."
Your question was "Globally? In under a day?".

I'm not seeing any required specificity in your question as to how serious should be the offence which led to the descent of the person's social status into that of someone to become regarded as a pariah.
