Buzz lightyear and the JREF Challenge

Personally Tricky , I don't 'do' recreational drugs . I find enough pleasure in my world that I don't need to rely on artifical endorphin stimulation .

To find pleasure, we ALL rely on endorphin. Think about that.

There is a good chance that the mind opening effects of this substance contributed to many of the advances in science of that time and since .

Before of after the cells died off ?

Also there is much more to the human than just understanding rocks and making advances in science .

Yes, but there isn't more to science than science.

The most important thing that we must understand is ourself .

I would think that understanding others would be just as important.

Your understanding of others occurs in your mind . Belz .
So if you don't understand yourself and your thought processes then it is impossible to understand others and your relationship to them .

And yes I realise that we all rely on endorphins for pleasure , but if their production is artifically induced the body becomes reluctant to produce them naturally .
Also dose tollerance means that the use of the artifical stimulant has to increase with all the adverse side effects that follow .

So if you hit the grog regularly you end up with a shot liver and a big gut .
Not pretty !

And science should be an open ended field , constantly searching .

Hate to rain on your parade, mate, but that's exactly what science is.

Trouble is, they passed where you are now about 1000 years ago.

Boss in late again today, Buzz?

And evidence , hey Zep .
There is the Aboriginal mythology ........but........
In fact there is hardly a place in the world that doesnt have a creation serpent tucked away in some corner . But its just mythology so we will rule it non admissable .

Hawaii does not have a creation serpent anywhere in its mythology. Sky, earth, sea, volcano, and kalo (taro) is our brother.

Do you know what science is, Athiest ?

It is desceibed as " Systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimation " .

This is pretty much how I arrived at my hypothesis .

You will note that the description of "science" contains no reference to googling up information, of dubious origin, or backslapping with your mates in a internet forum .

So before you start telling me about science, it's probably good if you got out there and did a bit of your own .

Naturally. There are almost no snakes native to the Hawaiian Islands (and the few that are there are no more fearsome than worms). Myths are almost always constructed from the things people see around them. I'll bet kangaroos figure heavily in myths of the indigenous Australians, but we don't see them in Native American, Greek, or Chinese myths. You don't see elephants in Norse mythology.

They were simple stories made to help simple people make sense out of the world that they didn't have the tools to understand more fully. It appears that for some simple people, they are still performing that function.

:dl:

Mate, that's precious!

Let's break it down a little bit...

"Systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimation"

You have shown ad nauseum that you are incapable of this. You have observed and assumed, then you are shown the facts about what you observed. Then you stick with your original, rather odd, assumption! Buzz, how can you quote that sentence and not have to take a break with hysteria? Maybe you did!

Then you double up on your error, here:

"This is pretty much how I arrived at my hypothesis"

Absolute bollocks! The only thing your hallucinogenic episodes have told us have been about the immaterial world.

Boss having a quiet day, Buzz?

Awww, look how funny it is; it’s punctured its girlfriend, nobody believes in its imaginary friends and now it wants to play science. They’re just soooo cute at that age….

Can we keep it?

Please… please… pleeeaaaase… :j1:

Mate, we already have kept it.

It's quite friendly compared to lots, and is capable of very good [unintentional] humour. I imagine it as a kind of Tribble. I just hope we aren't feeding it here!

Yup, this was mostly a snide remark in response to the "everyone has creation serpents" comment. We may not have any kangaroos or elephants, but we do have some really cool geology (even if Pele isn't really responsible for her hair and tears).

EXCELLENT geology! And an astonishing array plants and birds too.

Yep, I got it, I just wanted to make it a little more explicit, just so I can claim I know what the "E" in JREF means. :D

Hawaii is on my list of top geological places to go, along with Australia/New Zealand and the Galapagos. I've always wanted to see the black sand beaches, climb diamond head, stand by a flowing stream of lava and snorkel the reefs. (Sigh) Some day.

Sorry, the Nyquil is dulling my irony/sarcasm/intelligence meter a bit. Any of you geologically-inclined gentlemen are more than welcome to stop by our place any day. We can show you the works including an inside tour of lava tubes, a full-on green sand beach (olivine), and other fun with volcanoes. The last time we were over on the Big Island, you could walk right up to the flows and poke them with sticks. My husband wants to bring hot dogs next time.

Your understanding of others occurs in your mind .

Just like everything else. IF you're a solipsist.

So if you don't understand yourself and your thought processes then it is impossible to understand others and your relationship to them .

That sounds like a non-sequitur. Would you mind elaborating ?

And yes I realise that we all rely on endorphins for pleasure , but if their production is artifically induced the body becomes reluctant to produce them naturally .

Perhaps. Source ?

Same thing for chocolate, actually.

Observation ? Of giant snakes ?

It also doesn't involve believing folk tales at face value.

That's a very kind offer, Hokulele, one I hope to take you up on in the not-too-distant. Yes, I forgot to mention the lava tubes. Hawaii really is a double paradise for geologists, even though I'm more of a sedimentologist than a vulcanologist.

I'll bring the hot dogs.

Its a pity that the recreational use of hallucinogens gives the uninformed the idea that anyone who uses them is a drug addict .
The greatest frontier that man can explore is his own mind . To do this requires unique and powerful tools .
Like all powerful tools , they can be lethal in the hands of the inexperienced or reckless .
But used correctly they allow doors that are normally closed, to be opened .

Hell yeah, baby! Pass the "tools"!

So did Buzz ever actually submit a claim application? If he did, I bet it would look like this:

1) WHAT IS YOUR POWER?
I can prove that anyone in the world is a stupid poop-head.
2) HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO PROVE THIS POWER?
I will call you a stupid poop-head. Then I will say "More soon," and go away for a couple of days. Then I will come back and do it again.

Quote ; "Like other physically adictive drugs, nicotine causes pathological down-regulation of the production of dopamine and other stimulatory neurotransmitters as the brain attempts to compensate for artificial stimulation. When nicotine exposure ceases, the neural changes it creates in the brain and body are unpleasant."

Hey Belz , since Wilkapedia is the approved source of info for this forum , this is what they say about dose tollerence .

Probably a good thing to answer your other queries is for you to do a bit of sensory deprivation , like a float tank or similar .

See if you can be alone with yourself . Then you will start to understand that your perception of the world exists in your head .
