Bushfire season 2023-2024

The Bureau is predicting a possible return to La Niña conditions at the end of this year.

Scorching temperatures expected next week as heavy rain falls on NSW and Queensland this weekend

The sun may be setting on summer, but several newsworthy weather events will occur around Australia before the end of the season.

A Cyclone Lincoln drenching will finally bring relief to the relentless WA heatwaves this weekend, while on the opposite side of the country two separate weather systems bring a flash flood risk to parts of Queensland and north-east New South Wales.

Summer will then conclude with one final burst of heat and elevated fire dangers across south-east states on Tuesday and Wednesday.

However, the arrival of autumn does not signal a sudden transition to stability — the Australian Severe Weather Season extends to April, meaning another two months of cyclones, thunderstorms and heatwaves.

And while calmer weather should eventually arrive by May, attention will then turn to the Pacific and the possible return of La Niña, an outcome likely to produce a wet finish to 2024.
Good for me, because I love rain and I live in a location that doesn't flood. Not so great for a lot of people.

Well we survived the bushfire season in Melbourne with only one bushfire of note in regional Victoria, which is quite a change from recent years.

But what is interesting is that after a very wet summer, March has been the driest month on record, with around 2mm. Even more amazing is that most of the month has featured a series of slowly moving weather systems, so along with no rain, cool sunny days topping at 20C. Unheard of.

The good news is that bushfire season is over for now in this part of the world.

Sorry for those who have been closer to fires.

There were actually two bushfires of note in Victoria this season, not one, those at Pomonal and at Beaufort. But luckily no lives lost.
