you, know, asking someone to determine another person's race by simply looking at their name is not only racial stereotyping, it's downright offensive. In this day of mixed race couples it's problematic to try and make those types of judgements.

How offensive was it ? Well lets just say that when I first read the idea, i could only type in a short reply before the waves of nausea I was fighting overcame me and I had to hit enter and make a mad dash to the vomitorium.

Not only did I loose my lunch, but I feel some of that green gunk I coughed up was the essence of my respect for humanity as the last thing I thought when I woke up this morning was that I'd be asked to try and determine someone's race simply by looking at their name.

Once I finished purging myself I managed a nap, nay, more I passed out from all the effort of the retching and only slept fitfully as I was tormented by the images of white robed klansmen pointing their fingers at me, demanding that I come up with a skin colour as they shouted surnames at me.

My fingers are still shaking as I type this and I have a call in to my therapist requesting an emergency appointment.

It was that offensive.

So...the first step you need do is to publicly acknowledge your privileges, which will serve as an admission that you're actually part of the problem but taking active steps to counter that.

Is your family middle or ruling class (read elite) ?
Do you speak the dominant language of the country you live in ?
Do you have any formal education ?
Is your current gender the one you feel you should be living with ?
Are you heterosexual ?
Are you able bodied ?
Do you live in the country you were born in ?

I know grappling with your demons is challenging, I tried it and failed and remain a boring ole' centrist whose to grounded in reality but Dammit Janet, errr, sorry, Jane I sense you have the potential to do great things.

Stout, while I appearently got the point you were trying to get across, I still don't think it's valid in the context that's been provided since.

Admittedly, I don't have an in-depth understanding of the Gaza Freedom March, but it seems to me it was an international effort. Regardless of the races or cultural origins of the participants, they weren't specifically trying to patronize Egyptians; they were objecting to a specific policy set by the Egyptian government, which had directly effected their plans for the march.

In your reference to colonialism, there seemed to be an implicit idea that privileged Westerners acted in a patronizing fashion towards Egypt because its population had predominantly darker skin, rather than treating it the same as any nation whose policy was in the way of their efforts. If that is what you meant, I don't think you have any basis for that assumption. If it was not, then I think your analogy served was flawed.

I still don't think you were racist, really, but I do think that you were wrong.

Yes, it was an international effort, mainly an effort from the very same countries that the far left accuses of screwing up the world and the same countries the far left accuse of supporting the "apartheid" system that currently defines the relationship Israel has with the Palestinians, usually referred to as "the west"

I think they were out to patronise the Egyptian government, to try to embarrass them into redefining their relationship with Gaza to something more in line with their far left politics. It's using those very same far-left politics that I'm basing my assumptions on. In the real world, however, I'll agree, my premise is insignificant.

My colonial reference had more to do with how the far-left views the creation/existence of Israel. We have what basically amounts to a bunch of Europeans colonising lands that they aren't native to and this is what sparks the far left's objection to anything other than the one state solution.

I do agree, the colonisation angle does not apply to the Gaza Freedom Marchers.
