Brown peoples land (Egypt)

I was teached that it is in no way bigoted or racist to call Egypt, brown peoples land.

i wonder how you see that, do i overreact when i call such an expression bigoted and racist?

Dunno about racist, but it sounds stupid to me. I mean, since when is any land defined by one skin colour or has some kind of monopoly on it? I mean, it's like calling the UK the redheads' land, on account of having more of them than anyone else, or Iceland the white people's land, 'cause they're not getting much of a tan up north.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this question may make a little more sense in the language and culture in which you grew up, because I know of no part of the English-speaking subset of the world where that expression is, or has ever been, in use.

Of course, since you're Swiss, I have no idea what your native language is (can't you greedy ********** get by with just one or two like the rest of us?) - which one was it, and does the original phrase have some connotations that the rest of us don't understand?

Now that some context has been provided, we might see what this person was trying to achieve by referring to Egypt in that way. This looks like a small part of a bigger discussion, but I think it's an attempt to reference colonialism. By referring to Egypt as "brown people's land", this person may have been trying to say that white people going there to tell the people living there how to do things has colonialist undertones (people with predominantly brighter skin patronizing people with predominantly darker skin).

That said, it's still wrong to refer to any country as "[insert colour here] people's land". Most countries have citizens of different skin colours, and the land belongs to all of them.

I'm the one who used this term in that context

DC, thinking he had a real live racist on the line went all politically correct on me, calling the term "offensive" with out the slightest clue that this is used regularly by people within the PC movement.

So if the hardcore PCers, the people who run around calling "racism" every chance they get are not offended and use the term itself, I'm thinking DC's focus on my use of the term betrays not only a lack of understanding of the terminology he chose to attack, but an inability to even remotely grasp the point I was trying to make.

So, I'll agree to the term being stupid. hey, I didn't coin it, but I figure that if anyone is going to support a group ( in this case a group if international protesters who flew to Egypt to protest at the Gaza border) that should person should be at least remotely familiar with the politics of the people he chooses to defend.

In this case, DC was defending the actions of a far left group, a group IMO who fails to live up to their own ideology and if Dc is capable of engaging that argument, then bring it on.

But screaming racism, when there is clearly no racism present is nothing more than a self aggrandizing cheap shot.

And most of the Egyptians I've met have been more of a golden color. Not really brown, more of a dark sandstone. Oh, and they have such nice accents, it's almost as charming as the South African accent!

I know this is a derail, but South African accents are charming? Awesome... especially seeing as I'm going overseas soon!

Back on topic, I agree with the idea that calling Egypt Brown people's land is silly. Even "darkest" Africa is littered with white people, brown people, yellow people, coloured people. And a whole range of colours in between.

What's interesting is that if I was forced to use a "colour" to describe my fellow countrymen, I would use brown, as the immigrants from central Africa are a lot darker and would technically qualify for as black.

Fortunately I prefer to call everyone here African's or South Africans which makes it easier.
