Brexit: the referendum

You mean: you wanted to demonstrate how big idiots "euroskeptics" are, how little planning they ever do and how little idea they have altogether? Congratulation, you have succeeded spectacularly. Václav Klaus is nowhere to be found, Konvička disappeared from face of the Earth, also Mach is reported to be missing and all those parties against EU are just arguing about anti-smoking law...

Also if your intention was to demonstrate what happens when country tries some idiotic ideas like talking about A50 exit, thanks. We are writing brand new books for all the macroeconomics classes.

BTW: Your funny group of jokers have quite a choice: Full exit and trying to trade outside of EU. Not much of market there...
Or try to stay with Market. No change at all then as all "edicts" will apply to you, all that free movement will stay and you'll pay lot. With no grants for your development...

I guess being forgotten hole is a choice....

This post doesn't appear to be in response to the post it quotes. Were you meaning to quote someone else perhaps?

Something that has been apparent since the official public campaigns started: Brexiters are really *********** clueless despite campaigning for leaving the EU. They have no clue on what to do and now that the **** has hit the fan they are running around like a bunch of headless chickens praying that someone, anyone, will hand them a deal that gives all the benefits of being the EU without any of the responsibilities.

What a *********** joke.

What if anything does this tell us about the theory that lots of leavers are regretting their choice?

Apologies for trying to bring some critical thinking into the debate!

Very little as you neglected to include any sort of key and your third link goes to the same map of leave percentages in your second

Lord Ashcroft survey blah blah

"Nearly half (49%) of leave voters said the biggest single reason for wanting to leave the EU was “the principle that decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK."
This obviously important principle that "decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK" should in theory now lead to a clamour to leave The UN, WTO, NATO, IPCC, IMF, G8 etc all whom make decisions about the UK outside the UK.

This vote underscores what I've been pointing out for years about the English public. The world has been basically sold the idea that they are sophisticated, educated thinkers. However this has not been true for decades. I remember years ago, just naturally having the impression that if someone had an English accent, they were probably smarter or more educated than the average American. But over the years in conversations I've been shocked to find the opposite is true. Most encounters I've had with the English is that they are very similar to Trump supporters in America. Uneducated except in their own narrow focus in the world, uneducated in the true sense ...meaning they might "have a degree" but they are basically illiterate and racist, xenophobic arrogant people.

Just a few weeks ago I was talking to a typical Englishman who kept arguing with me that Christopher Columbus actually landed in America and how typical Americans don't know history.

It's strange how it's shifted over the years. English teenagers are now considered the most illiterate in the entire developed world. So we can only imagine what the future is bringing.

I love this vote because it shows people what I've been saying for years. It's time to stop letting the English piggy back off the reputation of the past and actually be accountable in the here and now.

The map showing how many people signed the petition doesn't show much other than population density. You need a similar map that shows the percentage of the population that signed the petition, if you want it to actually mean anything.

How do I know he was from England? Because he told me he was (generally the first thing out of their mouths in a ridiculously arrogant way.) I work down by Wall Street on the weekends and I generally run into Tourists in a pub there. (The game is on) So the conversation was really not a focused one. (I was between classes for a Social Studies test) Casual conversation about what we do. I mentioned the test, he pointed out how we don't know history here.

I said, "Yeah it's true, some Americans don't realize Christopher Columbus never actually landed in the United States, he landed in the Caribbean." thinking he'd nod.

He then argued with me for five solid minutes that I didn't know my History (typical Yanks) and Columbus landed at Plymouth Rock.

Like I said, I'm less and less surprised by these types of interactions these days. I'm in my mid 40s and growing up the "British" were always considered more intelligent or sophisticated than "Americans." (PS I know the English don't like to be called British, I was talking about the past.)

So I think it's taken a while for the world to realize that the Educated Sophisticated Englishman of our dear old Sting songs is GONE. It has been replaced with people like those who support Trump in the US. Extremely uneducated and illiterate, yet walking around like they are the smartest person in the room. The kind of people, you can't teach because they already think they know everything.

I avoid conversations with the English like the plague now.

Blimey, who's doing our PR? That's an impressive and unrealistic result. :D

I used to believe it. :D Now I'm wondering if it was ever true at all? Right now it seems like "it's changed!" But could be that it was always that way.

I will say that I don't find the same type of issues with the Irish, Scottish or Welsh. It is only the English, in my experience.:)

How do I know he was from England?

 How do you know he was typical?

I've lived here for 40 plus years and still wouldn't know what anyone meant by "typical Englishman". Never mind. You keep trotting out your little anecdotes and grand generalisations. I'm sure they add up to something in your own mind.

I think you know what I mean and are playing the typical type of games I was talking about. But this thread isn't about my experiences. England has show itself to be what it really is with this vote. I'm just relieved that the rest of the world is taking a step back and reassessing who they are really dealing with. Comparatively it's been all about Trump and the US. (Something I'm cringing in embarrassment myself) But for all of England's posturing "votes to keep Trump out." The people there are exactly like the Trump supporters in the US.

If the US elects Trump I suppose I'll have to eat crow myself. But while the English have been ragging on the Americans for years about how "Narrow minded, arrogant, uneducated, racist, etc etc etc, it seems English people have bred a country filled with the same types of people and who are now outnumbering the rest.

Maybe it's time for the English to fix their own problems instead of glomming on American issues all the time.

I just posted that as of this year English teenagers are the most illiterate in the developed world. That's the future coming to England.

Note: I won't discuss this further, because I do believe it's off topic.

The Brexit vote just brought it full focus to everyone's attention, so that's why I mentioned it.

We have? I'm sorry, I wasn't at those meetings or I'd have protested.

Some of the most entertaining, intelligent, enlightened people I have met have been from the USA. (I suspect the intelligent and educated are more likely to travel, thus every single country's casual ambassadors to other nations are nearly always going to be more interesting than those that choose to stay at home. Yes, I am using my biggest sweeping (generalisation) brush today.

Why thank ya! You know the second part is interesting because I think that may have been true in some areas, but I live in NYC. We tend to get every kind of traveler because it's a capital city and main tourist destination.

So go down to a tourist trap like 42nd Street on a Sunday and you won't be getting lots of sophisticated people there. That's why us natives avoid it. (One of my pet peeves is when tourists go there and meet lots of rude obnoxious pushy tourists from other places and try to say that's what NYers are like.)

And again, off topic so I'll tip my hat at this conversation as well.:cool:

Back to the Brexit vote. This great documentary by Trevor Phillips. Here's a link to Youtube. He made this documentary 2 years ago and if you watch from 49 minutes in, you will see EXACTLY what I am talking about.

This vote is not suprising at all.
