Trump likes Boris
“I have a lot of respect for Boris. He obviously likes me, and says very good things about me.

“I was very saddened to see he was leaving government and I hope he goes back in at some point.

“I think he is a great representative for your country.”

This is just fine - Obama OTOH having an opinion about Brexit is the equivalent of Russia's covert meddling in the Brexit campaign - apparently

Useful look at the White Paper from the BBC's Reality Check team:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44807561

Unsettling isn't it ?

The proposal that a sector that comprises 80% of the UK economy, and which has a large trade surplus with the EU, and which is highly mobile is excluded from the proposed customs cooperation is basically a green-flag for Dublin, Paris and Frankfurt to come and help themselves to nice slices of the City, EU-facing service companies (like the IT and aerospace sectors) to relocate and wave goodbye to pan-European outsourcing deals. :(

Then again we have the "comforting" prospect of a US President who has repeatedly and clearly said America First saying that he wants a hard Brexit so that we can get a good trade deal. Protip, the UK has a large trade surplus with the US, President Trump will be looking to "fix" that so good luck in trying to offset the loss of trade with the EU with the US.

Yes but Raab had been a remainer and the Telegraph, like its natural demographic (manyalmost all of Dad's friends) are brexiteers. My godfather told me that it was probably all for the best. Strangely, it's the ones who were partners in local businesses with little interaction with Europe except for holidays that think this way. The ones who had careers with wider trading are firmly against it.

This is incorrect. He campaigned to leave the EU:

https://dominicraab.com/2016/02/21/the-europe-question/

Yesterday, the Prime Minister announced the date of the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union (EU) – which will be the 23rd June. I have decided after very careful consideration that that I will campaign for Britain to leave.

Sun trumpeting an exclusive interview with Trump
WORLD EXCL: Donald Trump warns Theresa May her soft Brexit blueprint will "kill" any future trade deal with the US

Donald Trump: 'I told May how to do Brexit but she wrecked it - US trade deal is off!'

Trump tells me: "If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the trade deal".

I look forward to ceptimus condemning this blatant interference in British politics in terms proportionate to their previous and much-repeated outrage at Obama saying a lot less....

Some comments about a post-Brexit deal with the US:

All will agree that a US deal is a good idea in principle.

But the Trump administration is insisting that any future agreement would include the import into the UK of hormone-fed beef and chlorine-washed chicken.

This is not compatible with EU standards - and most British consumers don’t seem to want these products either.

In fact, the whole US bigger-and-cheaper-is-better farming industry is at odds with the vision of the Environment Secretary Michael Gove of high-quality farm products in a rich countryside.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-44807972

Rest assured that post-Brexit, our chicken will be chlorinated and our beef will be hormone-fed regardless of public opinion or Michael Gove's empty words

Going back to my analogy about a family voting to move house.....

Yes promises were made about being able to move to a far nicer house, in a nicer place for less money - but they turned out to be lies/overoptimistic.

It's now clear that we have three options:

  • Stay put (if the house sale hasn't completed)
  • Rent (rather than own) the house next door for a wee bit more than we're currently paying an having no say how the place is decorated (soft Brexit)
  • Sleeping rough (hard Brexit)

It seems the Conservative Party is determined to see us sleeping in the park, ignoring the two other options because "moving house means moving house"

That's because the Lawsons, Rees-Moggs and Farages in the family have deliberately persuaded you to sell the house cheap and plan to buy your house and live on the rental income. Don't expect to see them on a park bench next to you.

Farage is on the 'Wright Stuff' news show this morning telling us how London is worse for crime than New York and it's all Khans fault.
Complaining he is distracted by his hatred for Trump and hasn't visited a single crime scene for victims family.

He is blaming the entire Brexit mess on the Civil Service, that's why everyone had to resign, they were 'set up' by the civil servants who are all remainers and deliberately wrote a white paper they knew to be unacceptable to 'real' leavers.

Fancy having your country run by non elected bureaucrats hey Nige.

So to get a trade deal with the US, we will have to have the Brexit they want, the prime minister they want, and the policies they want.

Do leavers honestly feel that we are going to get a trade deal favourable to the UK?

It looks like every other country knows what a mess we are in and will be ready to take advantage.

Yeah, but we'd be freely and willingly letting the US pick our Prime Minister, set the course of the most important process since the end of the second world war and set policy.

The alternative, to be a major influencer in a trading bloc where we can opt out of decisions we don't like (but more than 99% of which we do) - is an intolerable constraint on our sovereignty.

Especially when Trump has made it clear that to him us exporting more into the USA then we import from the USA is not acceptable.

I love the smell of sovereignty in the morning, it smells like... chlorinated chicken.

*rant on*

Maybe it's high time our countries' leaders grew a pair, stepped up to the plate, and called Trump on his bluff.

Maybe it's time for the rest of the world to start weaning ourselves off of the US consumer market and prioritize trade with each other instead.

Maybe it's time to grant Trump and his cheerleaders their wish and let the US become completely 100% isolationist.

According to Cult 45, they don't need (nor want, nor like) the rest of us anyways. According to Cult 45 we're all just a bunch of useless deadbeats doing nothing but feeding off of the US teet.

So...

Let's grant them their wish... and walk away.

Enough is enough.

*rant off*

(Apologies to all the sane and decent Americans still left out there stuck in the middle of this nightmare)

I thought it was against the rules to change a letter to defeat the autocensor?
:D

But yes, it has now become a point of political principle and consequences be damned. The people voted (by a small margin in a non-binding referendum) to Leave and so we will leave even if we have to destroy the UK economy in the process.

It becomes an interesting line of argument if you also apply it to General Elections, depending on what you think of the different parties economic policies.

Are your General Elections non-binding too?

Are your General Elections non-binding too?

For individual MPs, no, but for the Government, Cabinet and Prime Minister, well yes, they kind of are.

Eta: and campaign and manifesto promises can be easily ignored or reneged upon (right Lib Dem voters?)
