Did he have a stale mate?
Or a checkered past?
Hey, it put conventional wisdom on its head that the commie was the gentleman and the western guy was the jerk -- but he still was the American and beat the evil reds at their own game. They had owned that game and he went right through a laundry list of their all time greatest players in the proceeding tournament like they were water. They cheated and drew each other prematurely to save energy to beat him. He crushed their commie cheating asses anyway. He humiliated the evil chess empire single handedly.
Let's not forget that.
He humiliated the evil chess empire single handedly.
Let's also not forget that he then promptly disowned America and railed against it, then went into hiding for years, only emerging to praise the September 11 attacks and explain how hundreds of thousands of Jews needed to be rounded up and shot.
I really don't see how we owe him anything.
He undoubtedly could have used some medication. I think it shows a correlation between mental illness and brilliance.I think he is an object lesson in why you don't want to get over obsessed about anything. In becoming such a master of chess, he lost all touch with humanity.
...Really? "Evil chess empire?"
You could've just said, "Soviet Union," "USSR," or countless other phrases...And you decided to go with, "evil chess empire?"
'Cause I gotta be honest, it's a bit difficult to take that seriously.
(Oh noes! I hope they don't put me a pawncentration camp!)
Yes, and obviously Russia is reeling so much from that "embarrassing blow" that they still dominate the game to this day.
