Bobby Fisher exhumed in paternity question

Oh, that's why they are digging him up. I thought from the recently revived zombie thread on his death it was to check that he was still dead. :(

I'm a chess player only because of the hype when I was in grade school of Spasky-Fischer. I have a fondness for the guy but what a lunatic that guy was and bizarre things still follow him in death.

I remember when they had their rematch in Yugoslavia and the state department sent him a letter stating American citizens couldn't engage in competitions in that country at that time and he held a press conference just so he could spit on the letter on international television.

He's lucky the Icelanders embraced him. Not many others would.

Bob Zombie?

Fischer was amazing, but man was he Looney Tunes. He pretty much hated anything and everything the older he got.

Hopefully they'll do what they need to do quickly and shove him back into the ground so he can finish rotting.

Hey, it put conventional wisdom on its head that the commie was the gentleman and the western guy was the jerk -- but he still was the American and beat the evil reds at their own game. They had owned that game and he went right through a laundry list of their all time greatest players in the proceeding tournament like they were water. They cheated and drew each other prematurely to save energy to beat him. He crushed their commie cheating asses anyway. He humiliated the evil chess empire single handedly.

Let's not forget that.

Let's not forget that.

Let's also not forget that he then promptly disowned America and railed against it, then went into hiding for years, only emerging to praise the September 11 attacks and explain how hundreds of thousands of Jews needed to be rounded up and shot.

I really don't see how we owe him anything.

...Really? "Evil chess empire?"

You could've just said, "Soviet Union," "USSR," or countless other phrases...And you decided to go with, "evil chess empire?"

'Cause I gotta be honest, it's a bit difficult to take that seriously.

(Oh noes! I hope they don't put me a pawncentration camp!)

Yes, and obviously Russia is reeling so much from that "embarrassing blow" that they still dominate the game to this day.

I never said we owed him anything only that we shouldn't forget that an American winning the chess championship was exponentially less likely than an American team winning the World Cup eight years ago (we have a real chance this year)

I think he is an object lesson in why you don't want to get over obsessed about anything. In becoming such a master of chess, he lost all touch with humanity.
He undoubtedly could have used some medication. I think it shows a correlation between mental illness and brilliance.

If you were living and aware in the early 70's you knew the Soviet Union was many things: Oppressive on political rights, oppressive to the point of starving millions of Ukranians, crazy ass oppressive for many reasons -- but what they were to me were evil chess cheats. Bobby showed them. He forfeited games and still kicked their cheating asses.

You're out of touch because they no longer dominate chess. Spassky had to defect and four of his advisors went to the gulags.

Fischer single handedly without a single chess advisor with him crushed a well oiled chess machine. That kind of event happens less than once in a lifetime. I came home from grade school and watched the PBS coverage and was one of the first to celebrate.

You don't think Gary Kasporov who dominated shortly later was a commie Russian do you. He was/is a non-Russian commie hater.
