Barred from entry to the UK

People who picket funerals have violated common decencies.

(I'm aware that not all the people on the list have done this, it's just an example.)

Jeremy Vine is discussing this now on his show on Radio 2. Views seem to be polarised between "expose them to publicity and show them as the hatemongers they are" and "keep them out". Except for one person who apparently agrees with Phelps' homophobia, so would like him let into the country.

I come down on the side of keeping them out, and I'm intrigued by who the six unnamed people might be.

Merry birthday, Ian Osborne.

The Phelpses are among the few who are on the list not for provoking criminal activity or terrorism but for actions that might lead to violence. I'm absolutely certain that the UK is better off for not having these morons visit the country, but this nevertheless makes me a bit uneasy.

If they were Brits living in this country I think there would be more concern but these are foreigners wanting to come into the country so have no rights here.

We might take a page from Edward Everett Hale and put all those folks on a rusty old tub anchored 30 miles off Somalia for all eternity.

I suppose it's just possible that Gordon has sneaked Tony Blair onto the list, so that the next time he goes off on one of his faith-uniting diplomatic missions he can't get back into the country?

ETA: Might be wise for Cameron to take UK based holidays until after the next election too.

For just having and talking about unpopular views - no, for encouraging hatred etc. yes.

For encouraging violent acts, yes. For encouraging hatred? Well, the point of speech is to have an effect on other people.

Speech which doesn't affect others is pointless.

So why were the Nazis successful? Was it because their type of speech was not banned? Or was it because they banned opposing voices, both explicitly and implicitly via threats of violence?

Anyone wanna learn from history? If you go read Freakonomics, you'll see the story of a reporter who helped destroy the net effect of the KKK by helping tout, and making fun of, their positions. Thus it turned into little more than a social club. (Something some idiots in recent days are trying to reverse, by the way, with talk of attempted bans.)

How do I get off this subgenius world? Sheesh.

They ban Michael Savage, we ban Cat Stevens (sorry, can't remember his Moslem name). Britan wins. America loses.

Yusuf isn't banned...

That may be true now, but my recollection is that his name was on a watch list after 9/11 and that he was actually deported to the UK after trying to enter the United States.

Mandella is no longer banned, either, is my understanding.

My point merely is that the United States is not above banning entry to people that it's government determines to be a threat of one kind or another to the state.

You are correct. He figured it was because there was someone else on the list with the same or similar name. However, he had previouisly been accused by Israel of giving monetary support to Hamas, but he denied doing it knowingly (if at all). This was probably the reason he was on the no-fly list. At any rate, it didn't last very long.

Seems to me that banning people who would be considered criminals in the UK is perfectly reasonable. If they went there, the UK would just end up imprisoning them and causing a diplomatic incident.

What? No Wilders? Those damned Muhammad praising british hypocrites ... ;)
