One of the benefits of participating in these fora is the freedom to speak one's mind.

And some of us naturally have dirty minds, as can be seen by numerous other threads on this forum (the Sex thread comes to mind.) I would hope that comments are taken in the spirit in which they are intended...obvious jokes should be taken as such. Serious commentary should be taken as such. And certainly neither political party has out-classed the other in this particular election.

Back to the subject....I'm not sure that showing up to an interview with your "daddy" to hold your hand is very classy in this instance, but apparently McCain thought it necessary. I also don't believe that his demeanor during every time Palin spoke helped his case. Try watching the interview again, but keep your eye on McCain.

My offense was greater than what I have offered for similar comments I have seen, so sorry if I pounded on you verbally in special.

I think sometimes it is easier to say things on the forum than around the water cooler at work, for example.

Fair dinkum. I forget sometimes that not everybody here knows about my warped sense of humor.

And I have seen any number of comments before (from both sides, I think), but I never squawked about it...sometimes one particular comment rankles feather's more than others.

And hey, Palin's acting like a goofball, and she is certainly fair game, but when the attacks get too personal, I think that opponents loose their audience.

Yes, I possibly crossed the line with that one. But let's face it. "Succubus" is a really funny word. It is almost impossible not to make a joke about it.

Did you hear about the Aggie terrorist who tried to blow up a bus but burned his lips on the tailpipe?

Regarding women in general:

I think that the Republican party needs more women in important positions, and so when a Republican woman aspiring to high office is attacked in lewd ways, as opposed to her position on issues, it smarts a bit.

We have active female legislators from Washington State, but they are Democrats. I don't agree with their politics, but I appreciate that they get it there and try to get things done.

What I find distressing in many Republicans is their tendency to slam Democratic women because they aren't fashion models. I've listened to Hillary jokes, Madeline Allbright jokes, Janet Reno jokes, even Amy Carter jokes, which had nothing to do with their positions or abilities, but only about how ugly they were. Yeah yeah, all in good fun, but let the tables be turned and they suddenly become Susan B. Anthony.

Anyway, thanks for your comments. I'll try to be a little more serious in serious threads in the future.

I get the feeling that McCain is there, not because he and the campaign is freaking out about Palin so much, than because Palin is insisting he be there. She's sick of the attacks and she wants some cover and she better get it or she's bailing. The campaign has to know what it looks like to have McCain hovering over her shoulder, monitoring every word.

I think McCain grabbed a tiger by the ears when he chose Palin, and now he dare not let loose.

Once again for your edification: I have a bias toward Obama, as aforementioned, but I also stated a fact: McCain has a reputation for having an anger problem. That is common knowledge. If you truly aren't aware of this common knowledge, I'll provide links. First: Do you honestly have no awareness of his reputation for having a hair trigger temper?

I did watch the vid. I don't see him making any "angry" gestures or postures. Perhaps this is a case of confirmation bias?

And I have heard of McCain's temper. I have not heard any of his colleagues call it problematic. I could be wrong; I haven't looked into it much as his anger problem seems to be under control since he's been campaigning. Considering he's blanketed by reporters every waking morning, if he would have blown up, I'm sure we would have heard about it.

Yes, the thread has taken off with some good comments, but the ends do not justify the means.

Point taken. Normally I would have and do, but in this case it was a self-explanatory topic-starter that was clearly topical and clearly belonged in its own thread. The title makes it obvious what the link is and what I thought about it.

First of all, I'm not a Democrat, I'm an independant. The last time I registered for a party, it was the Republican party. Second of all, it was a stinking joke which I first heard from Willie Nelson. Now you can get all upset if you like, but it's not like I was a candidate and I called a reporter a "major league a**h*le". Neither does it come close to some of the things I've heard said about Hillary Clinton. It was a silly, but naughty, pun on the word "succubus".

Seems some folks here are getting a little defensive. Maybe they ought to see a psychologist.

Yeesh, people are getting their panties in a wad about any jokes or criticism of Palin. While some of the stuff is pretty low-brow, people just need to lighten up, as it comes with the territory of bare-knuckle politics. If you can't take the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen.

Next thing you know, Palin's defenders will accuse the critics of being sexist... oh, wait...

Of course, even I've been known to jib Democrats for their women...in another thread recently, I was pestering leftysergeant about Maria Cantwell, one of our politicians here in WA; he was saying she was a good legislator and attractive, and I dug up the worst pictures I could find, even though I think she is a good legislator and attractive too.

Well, enough of this stuff, back to the partisan discussion.

I was right on my guess about the pizza parlor remark. In a CNN interview on Tuesday McCain said of Palin's Pakistan remark: "This was — hers was in an encounter in a pizza parlor where the question was framed so that of course we're going to go after terrorists.”

According to CNN, he even got that wrong. The question and answer was in Tony Luke's cheesesteak place in South Philly.

I think this incident, and not the Charles Gibson interview, is the one they were talking about. The fact that Palin has said largely the same thing there, though, really shows that it's not a matter of "gotcha journalism", but a credibility problem with McCain.

So again--if context is so important, what if Obama made his Pakistan remarks in say a kosher deli?

I've wondered that myself.
I too saw him as a bit aggresive as well. But It may simply be his mannerisms that are easily misinterpreted. He figets a bit in his seat, and it could simply be nervous energy, a busy day, too much coffee.... But the figeting comes off as aggression to those who are inclined to see it as aggresive.

Yup, it's hard to get past that little demon of confirmation bias.

She is now. Back then, she was plain, though not ugly. She had her father's gap-toothed smile.
