Australia

I've enjoyed the cool break after the 40+ days we had last week. I wonder if the heat wave in the West will head our way.

We seem to be having a bit of everything lately.

Delurk.. I love all the pics youve posted. Youre country has enough going for it without 40+ days in a week? Seven is so much more manageable :)

ROTFL That'll learn me not to use shorthand :)

Thank you.

Yeah, we have periods of a week or so of really hot days during the Summer and we call them 'heat waves'. They mainly occur in the Temperate areas in the southern half of the continent, away from the direct effects of the Monsoon, and are generally relieved by a West-East cold front just as everyone is about to 'go troppo'.

Sometimes you can have a 20° C drop in temperature in a few minutes and a massive electrical storm with it.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Yeah, And as inconvenient as it is sometimes, I think both Qld and WA have made the best decision for themselves.
Yes, it was hard to sleep last year with night-time being "delayed".

just as everyone is about to 'go troppo'.
I've been well and truly troppo the last couple of days, but thankfully it's been a bit cooler today/night.

Australian Time Zones

Yes. There will absolutely be fireworks on Australia Day. Sydney will be the best again.

There are a couple of little anomolies with our time zones. I've bolded the explanation of WCT below:

1. The City of Broken Hill and Yancowinna Shire in far-western New South Wales use South Australian time, since they're far closer to Adelaide than they are to Sydney.

Unfortunaly, they serve South Australian beer as well, which is tragic, except for Coopers.

2. Some residents of towns on the Eyre Highway including Eucla, Caiguna, Madura, Mundrabilla and Border Village in the south-east corner of Western Australia near the South Australian border do not follow official Western Australian time. Instead, they use what is unofficially known as Central Western Standard Time, which is halfway between Western and Central time (UTC+8:45).

The area maintained its fixed offset from UTC when daylight-saving time was introduced in South Australia. During Western Australia's trial of daylight-saving time from 2006-2009. The Central Western area also sets its clocks ahead an hour during local summer. The total population of the area is estimated at 200.

3. The Indian Pacific train (Sydney-Perth) has its own time zone - a so-called 'train time' when travelling between Kalgoorlie and Port Augusta which was UTC+9 hours during November 2005 when daylight-saving time was observed in the east. This was because of the 2 1/2 hour difference in times between South Australia and Western Australia.

4. Some island resorts in north Queensland unofficially adopt daylight-saving time for their activities and events. I suspect the main reason for this is that most resort companies (eg, Hamilton Island) are headquarted in Sydney, and use the same time zone for business convenience rather than to please the tourists.

It is tracking towards the coast at 13kph

Cyclone Magda

Olga now? How come we missed Natasha?

Cyclone Olga heads for north Qld

Saturday January 23, 2010 - 13:10 EDT

The weather bureau has issued a cyclone warning for parts of north Queensland as Cyclone Olga continues moving towards the coast.

Cylcone Olga has developed off the far north Queensland coast and is expected to make landfall tomorrow afternoon.

The Category 1 tropical cyclone is 370 kilometres east of Cairns in the Coral Sea.

If you're not all busy dodging cyclones, I want to wish all my Australian friends a Happy Australia Day!

So, I'm sure there's something I don't understand, and when you all sober up, maybe you can explain it to me...

What's "Knock With Your Elbows"? And why would it be on a greeting card?

And what's the story behind these images? And why would they be appropriate for use on an Australia Day greeting?

Having said that, I think people should get over the whole clock-time enslavement that they suffer now and do what most of us out in the sticks do regardless of the clock - if the Sun is up, you do daytime stuff, and when it goes down, you do nighttime stuff. The only reason you have a clock is so you know when the ABC News is on.
Nice theory. Pity it's impossible in practice. There's a lot more to keeping time than simply bringing the cows in. How do I know when to go to work? When to meet someone? When to coordinate anything with other people? People invented clocks for a reason - they needed them.

No idea.

You've never been to Australia, so you have never experienced our flies.

Every house in Australia has to have flyscreen over all doors and windows, or the little buggers get in everywhere. I came home one day that the cat had torn the flyscreen on one of the windows and there were hundreds of them.

They don't actually do any real harm, but they're annoying.

Never brush flies off someone's back. Much better to have them on your back than in your face.

The corks on the hat are supposed to keep the flies off. No-one bothers. We just wear Aeroguard.

The "Knock with your elbows" I'm not really sure about. I can only guess that ones hands are full of beer and bbq fixings when you get to your mates front door.

Piccy #1 - we have truck loads of flies. Waving them away from your face is referred to as the "great Aussie salute".

Piccy #2 - A hat with corks is something of an Aussie icon - it saves one performing the great Aussue salute as the corks do it automatically. The house itself looks a bit like the Ettamogah Pub.

Cheers - we raise our glasses to you Bis Sis.

Those were all the sorts of things that occurred to me; glad to see there's some logic inherent in UpsideDownLand!

"Knock with your elbows" is what you do when you are carrying a slab (carton) of beer to someone's house. It being considered ultra rude to bring anything less to a party or barbecue. ;)

And parties and barbecues are traditional Australia Day events?

(I can't see how they wouldn't be, for a mid-summer holiday...)
