Australia census

Mum works for the local Anglican church. She was updating the Church Roll this week.

There are 400 people on the Church Roll, but 1,420 said they were Anglican on the census.

Guilt is a powerful delusion.

I'll bet the reverse doesn't happen with the fine, upstanding and trustworthy heathens.

ie. There's Buckley's chance that any of us who answered 'no religion' are actually sneaking off to church every Sunday.

It would be lovely to think that the example of the church where your Mum works is typical of the situation right across the country, and that the actual number of religious types is only about a third of what the census says it is.

Or less. Mum was complaining that there were a lot of people on the roll who don't even go to church once a year.

Cool! Of course, I skipped the first two age brackets because I don't really think they matter too much.

Exactly.

Social engineer, yeah . . . that's it. Exactly what I was going to say. Yep.

The total figures at the bottom of each heading do count them, though. I wanted that to be overall.

The local Catholic Church is struggling so much it merged with another parish, yet apparently we have over 3,000 Catholics in Diamond Creek. A lot of people are lying.

Different definitions of Catholic. I am sure most people who said they were Catholic have a piece of paper to prove it. That is all what the census asks for. However many of them would not have seen the insides of a church for a long time.

I tend to agree with Damien, and think they're lying, to themselves at the very least.

I don't think a piece of paper or a man in a dress muttering mumbo jumbo over you as a child makes you religious. :)

I agree just having a piece of paper does not make you religious. Having you can say you are a Catholic because you have that piece of paper and that is all what the census asks. It does not ask "do you go to church?" Or "do you believe in what they teach?" Those are separate questions which would get different answers.

Have you got a link to the stats by state? I can't seem to find them at the ABS.

On the map of Australia on the ABS Census Data home page, you can click on states or capital cities, and then click on the Quick Stats button.

There's probably an easier way, but that was the way I got my numbers.

Well, the Census doesn't ask you if you have a piece of paper, but I agree that it also doesn't ask if you go to church.

I just wish these people would think about what they think.

(I made this.)

Thanks, and well done for all that. :)

Stats for same sex couples:

http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/2071.0main+features852012-2013

Interesting to note that:

"In response to the Census question about religion, same-sex couple partners were most likely to report having no religion (48%), followed by Christianity (40%). This contrasted with opposite sex couples, for whom Christianity was the leading affiliation (67%) followed by having no religion (21%)."

Interesting stats Orphia Nay on same sex couples! But I wonder if their views on religion are partly due to their age? Another part would be the fact that most (all?) religions reject homosexuals.

Yes, a bit of both, but probably largely the latter.

Wicca and Raelianism don't reject homosexuality. :boxedin:

More lies uncovered thanks to the census
Scientology describes itself as the world's fastest growing religion, but in Australia it is going backwards.

Figures released to Lateline from the Australian Census show that in 2011, just 2,163 Australians called themselves Scientologists, a decrease of 13.7 per cent from the 2006 census.

More on small religious groups in the link. I think that even though the article is 100% serious it is also funny.

Edit. The link http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-06-29/scientology-numbers-going-backwards/4101958?WT.mc_id=newsmail
Inserted by the prompt by Orphia Nay. Thanks.
