Now Skepticon is boycotting CFI as a sponsor.

I think it will end with Lindsay resigning. There seems to be some pretty powerful forces currently working against him.

No. There is a tiny group of SJW's in a huge echo chamber. CFI relies on donations. Trust me, none of the SJW crowd has any money. Which is why it is laughable that they've been promising to stop their support. You can't donate less than zero.

Well, Skepticon is free, and pretty much only features various bloggers who take a few hundreds in honorarium. By contrast, Michael Shermer takes 5000-10,000 in honorarium for student groups (possibly even more for other appearances). I read somewhere that Sam Harris' honorarium price is 50,000 dollars, and Dawkins probably takes even more than that.

So it's probably not that bad for them if they have other sponsors.

Surely they must have to pay for space and such, even if they don't pay the speakers and even if then, they usually pay for travel and hotel expenses. I work at conventions, I know how much we spend on various things, it is not cheap. Getting rid of a sponsor that way is a good way to find yourself with no convention at all, especially when you don't charge people to attend the convention.

Agreed. I renewed my Skeptical Inquirer for three years, and sent an email thanking them for not giving into what I considered strong-arm tactics and blatant manipulation on the part of a certain portion of the skeptical/atheist community.

I subscribed to Skeptical Inquirer because of this latest nonsense. I also told them precisely why I was subscribing. I think CFI may find themselves with more money and less headaches if the whiners go away.

I don't want to try and get a magazine sent to me in PNG or Chile. But I did friend Ron Lindsay on FB. I read his speech - I fail to see how anyone could genuinely get their frilly white underthings in a bunch over his comments. One may DISAGREE with his POV, but no need to spit the dummy, throw the toys out of the sandbox and take it personally as an assault.

I'm not much of a 'joiner' person, but I would be interested in hearing more from RL based on what I've seen so far from this most recent tempest.

Speaking of it, what is Skeptical Inquirer about? It seems to be about aliens and Bigfoot from what I gather.

80 pages.

It seems to be about aliens and Bigfoot from what I gather.

I used to subscribe to Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic magazines years ago. And what you say is pretty much why I stopped. I didn't need to read any more stories about debunking Bigfoot, especially when they had just debunked it 4 months earlier.

Wait. People actually pay these balloon knots to blather in person? What value is added to them speaking live that isn't found in their FTB entries, typepad and wordpress blog entries, podcasts, Tweets, interminable, self-indulgent Youtube videos and postings to their websites and Facebook pages?

Well, for one thing, you can invite them to have some coffee. ;)

Well, I see why delphi_ote hasn't posted here in a while.

Well, he’s white. And male. And American. I’d say that’s about as qualified as you can get for being an entitled clown.

Sad to see how pervasive and pernicious this personality cult has spread amongst so called skeptics.

eta - and Having read a bit futher into the comments... Elevatorgate! Elevatorgate Elevatorgate Elevatorgate!

I asked Greta Christina this but she didn't have time to answer.

I thought "hispanic" was more of a cultural term rather than a racial one? Or has it taken on a racial component because "white" means basically "Non-Mediterranean European" in the US?

Yes and no. It's complicated. Remember France is a Mediterranean country. It's more of a north/south divide, just like in and within the Americas. As I said before, most of our immigrants from the south are mostly Native American wrt ethnicity. Similar to the way mulattos in South Africa looked down on their fellow Africans, those in Latin America feel superior to their more directly/visibly related indigenous kin. For most Mexicans and mulattos further south, to be called an Indian (casino not slurpy :p) is an insult. Seems to me this kind of thing always occurs in cases where a country is conquered and occupied by an outside group. :dunno:

I believe the behavior Submor is warning against is the repeated posting of outside content without interaction.

Sup qwints! Is it just me or is the prior interaction requirement be cited more often over the last month or so? And yet lots of early comments are discouraged for not reading all in their basket, lol.

Doubt anyone noticed, but I was absent itt for a while. Hadn't even kept up with all the reading. Any new A+ers that have joined the discussion I missed? Big news like ceepolk not banning someone being dogpiled, yaknow, for like..disrupting the forum? :)

Trigger Warning: The following may be off topic, so for those who find derails traumatic be advised. It concerns adding another site to the ones being discussed itt. Jhunter please answer questions at end. :)
Reason I haven't been around much lately is I was watching a rather spectacular meltdown happening at talkrational.org. (TR) It began with a couple unbelievably rare suspensions in an attempt to address the exodus of active users. A+ style dogpiling/harassment on steroids has been the norm at TR for years. I only stick around as the wind cart thread landed there after it being put on mod status here and later running into trouble at RDF. Feels almost like coming home catching up itt. Like a kindergarten teacher after a rough day stepping into the teachers lounge and listening to adult conversation. What a long, strange trip it's been.

The latest TR drama has got it all. Members scoffing at PM warnings; mods pulling a mutiny and pushing buttons supposedly reserved for admins and unbanning a banned member; admins all in hiding; International art theft charges leading to the artist being banned but not the promoter who allegedly stole his 6 paintings and was a TR mod-natch-who after laying low amidst the furor was defrocked; recall votes on all 4 admins; cats and dogs, sleeping together!!! :p

Ravenscape, the ultra-dominant driving force at TR, lives in the Bay area and writes/edits software. Another co-founder is Febble, aka published cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Elizabeth Liddle. While not still on staff she has 37k posts on TR, Raven 80k. Sounds like a good plot for a book to me. Neuroscientist teams up with a silicon valley IT pro to create a kind of virtual Stanford Prison Experiment? Or perhaps Lord of the Flies was their model, with a different slant. Give the children (mentally anyway) an equal vote with the few adults on how to control infantile behavior, and see what happens.

A+ is p. much dead afaics, and just can't match this show. When the TR admins were faced with a revolt by a cadre of the resident chronic rule abusers, they caved. They have an A+ thread like this one, and quite a few who logged in at A+ were quickly banned based on comments made at TR. Sound familiar? The real irony is all the ways the two sites are similar, and now TR is even on the cusp of moving in the same direction wrt blaming the dogpiling targets for trolling and disrupting the forum. Staff discussions are public there, and I have quotes. Add the fact that any member can start a recall for any mod or admin, and it looks like good times are still a comin there. :D

The denouement of TR is in process now, with half the admins up for reelection. Much of the drama has abated, but many questions remain unasked, let alone answered. My reason for posting this here is to see if there is any interest in adding TR to the other sites being discussed itt. It is much larger and more active than A+, averaging about 50 logged over the day, even during it's current decline. But I realize it's not part of the SJW scene, so I'm not sure if it would fit here. If not, I apologize and request all the above about TR be deleted. Please also advise me what would be the correct forum for an analysis of TR thread. "Experiment in democratic moderation mutiny?" will be the tittle unless some of the wags here suggest a better one.

Lots of bad energy has developed in this remnant of the net's wild west days. The cart thread was p. insular there so it took me a long time to notice as that's where I spent like 90% of my time. Hate the thought of losing access to the nearly 5 thousand pages from this epic saga that began here at JREF in '08. It led to and witnessed 2 world records for wind powered vehicles-directly upwind and down-and countless experiments posted on YouTube. And TR as a whole might yet serve as an example of what happens over time when none of the rules are enforced. It sure ain't purty at times. :boxedin:

In the US demographic census, "Hispanic" is not a racial term, but a subcategory. One can be counted as Hispanic White, Non-Hispanic White, Hispanic Black, Non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic Asian, and Non-Hispanic Asian. So a Mexican of European Spanish descent, like Montalban, would be counted as Hispanic White.

Sorry if someone has already posted this.

Dan Cardamon - Three years after Elevatorgate

So RW is still milking her hate mail (or others are doing it for her). A straw man and false dichotomy to boot.

Watson. If you really wanted to further skepticism and critical thinking you would stop picking at the scab.

Dawkins has class and has moved on. Watson is clinging to her 15 minutes. She relishes this.

The really sad thing is that, absent her need for drama and self-aggrandizement, I think that she actually does have some talent. She's a good speaker. She's witty, and has entertaining presentations.

I know, I know, I'm going to get hate on for saying this, but I do think that Rebecca could do more than offer up stories about how somebody on Twitter said something mean about her, for the bazillionth time. This could serve as an object lesson on how the internet can ruin people. Because she has a fanbase who loves the drama, and the back-biting, and the witch-hunts, that part of her gets encouraged, and grows, and grows...until it consumes everything else.

I don't dislike Watson. She was one of the reasons I listened to Skeptics Guide To The Universe for years. I hate the disgusting comments made to her and about her. I care about women's rights and I don't want women to be harassed anywhere. But there are reasonable people who disagree with her. I resent that she rhetorically puts everyone into one of two camps. Those who agree with her and misogynists. No hate from me. :)

On the tremendously important announcement that she's boycotting CFI the use of elevatorgate came up in the comments (one commenter felt bad about using that particular phrase). St. Becky and her minions weighed in with several suggesting that "muslimagate" would be more appropriate.

As you noted... three years later.
