That's an example of how not to do it, IMO. The bulk of his character was pretty much him crying about his previous gay marriage and gay gay gay. He was an obvious attempt to placate fans.
Which brings up the point that the vast majority of the few gay characters out there are, at best, broad caricatures by someone who might have actually seen a gay guy walking down the street once, or did "research" by spending a few minutes in a gay bar; and at worst, are blatant, and often offensive, stereotypes put in "for teh lulz".
