Hhhmmm, looks like I spoke too soon about A+ being only an annoyance. They are cheering that they managed to force Vacula to resign from his position at the Secular Coalition for America. It looks like they've had their first casualty.

In the petition I liked their complaint that he posted something on "A Voice for Men". Just take a look at all the evil misogyny in his post there even though it's just a rehash of two posts. One was about Surly Amy complaining about fake jewellery and the other was about the DMCA she sent because of that post. But of course his one post there means he's an evil MRA who wants all women to go back into the kitchen and say there.

What sucks is that this petition, with all its logical fallacies was favoured by a group claiming to be for "skepticism and rationalism". I think someone should take those words away from them.

The "possibly" and the "I read the post as a hypothetical" are good. I mean, saying "The cost of being raped was that I lost trust in someone close to me..." is fairly ambiguous, right?

I don't even see how "I thought it was hypothetical" is an excuse. If you behave a certain way toward a hypothetical situation, wouldn't you behave that same way when the situation actually presents itself? I mean, isn't that the purpose of a hypothetical?

Matt Dillahunty has weighted in on his A+ forum kerfuffle in this longish (22 min.) video. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but the first part is a recap of the incident and he gets to his conclusions starting at about the 13:00 minute mark.

Dillahunty :

Has this incident changed my opinion about Atheism Plus? No. Has it changed my opinion about the A+ forum? Yes. We must be better than this.

They are inseperable.

A new development with Matt.

They asked him to apologize for the damage he has caused.

This is his reply.

The banned him and will only reinstate him if he apologizes for the "damage" he has done.

Frigging Hilarious! :D

Just the way to make friends and allies in the atheist community! Let's piss off a guy with the only atheist tv show in America and who has a large following worldwide via the internet. What a bunch of pathetic morons.

Not in the world of A+. Their experience trumps your hypothetical - even if you're talking about yourself.

Look and behold, sometimes people get along!

This is the exact opposite of the spirit of the plussers.

:) I'm one of the writers on the new network - and the main reason I wanted to join up was BECAUSE its explicit aim was to stay outside the ongoing kerfuffles and write about things like - y'know - atheism and skepticism. It won't always be possible to stay detached from the controversies (eg, Justin Vacula is on the network, is liked and respected, and what recently happened to him was nasty enough that some of SIN bloggers may want to discuss it) but that's the theory, anyway.

I watched the video - and I think Matt should tell us what he really thinks. :D

Good on him. FWIW, he's regaining my respect.

You're crazy! That takes honesty!

I see. That's all good. However, how could the plussers get Vacula (never heard of him) ousted? They are just a bunch of irrelevant Internet personalities.

What the heck is "classism"?

For the most part of my life I've lived in an affluent, upper middle class neighbourhood. Am I a problem simply because of that?

And of course, the reason she was banned? Not reading the assigned material. And the person banning her didn't bother to closely read the post for which she was banned.

The "possibly" and the "I read the post as a hypothetical" are good. I mean, saying "The cost of being raped was that I lost trust in someone close to me..." is fairly ambiguous, right?

In any case, if it's not clear, step one should be ask first, act second.
Not ambiguous.

If I'd been murdered the day I'd been raped the costs would have included never seeing the smile on my first born's face, never seeing my wedding day, never seeing my mother become the highest qualified member of the family, let alone the huge emotional grief to the rest of the family. The cost of being raped was that I lost trust in someone close to me, felt a little icky for a while and had to put up with a few months of solictiors and police as I came to terms with the fact that I didn't have enough evidence to prosecute.

They had this petition, which got over 900 signatures. He wasn't ousted, though, he resigned.

Yeah - and a lot of the names on the petition were false. Change.org might have removed them, but I think Mickey Mouse signed up, as did quite a few other fictional characters. I'm amazed they even got that many signatures - but then again, when trapped in your mom's basement with no porn, what else do you have to do. ;P

Justin took the high road and left to keep SCA clear of the nontroversy, and meanwhile, doc dropper Surly Amy has a post up where she tries to rewrite history on why she DMCAd several people, including Justin and the "Elevatorgate" blog writer who was anonymous. Surly sent the name out and someone else released it on twitter, but it was confirmed by another blog post today. And I think my high school kids have the drama, but this is like a fricken soap opera. I used to think that nobody could be that pathetic, but...
