Somewhat related, PZ Myers has put up a post of a Sarah Silverman skit.

http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2012/09/21/election-day-will-beinteresting/

Naturally this has been met with unanimous approval in the comments. Gosh darn it, they all love Sarah Silverman. Um... I guess they have changed policy on people who make rape jokes.

Did I miss the rape joke in that skit?
Is the information she is giving valid? Because that seems to me like a pretty horrible state of affairs, and it is right to be spreading that information, surely?

No, there wasn't one there, but she is known to make them in her act and hence she should be cast out by the Aplussers...

I took it to be a reference to a previous incident (and googling finds this, for example).

Right. OK.
I don't find that funny at all ... however, does it invalidate what she's saying about exclusion of voters in the US? Is the point she is making, to raise awareness of the possibility of being turned away from the polls any less valid or important?

Well no, I don't think so. I think the comment was more about the early rhetoric from Aplussers about casting out anyone who didn't agree with them. It shows up the fact that you can disagree in some areas, but still have valuable things to say.

No she didn't make a rape joke in that particular skit (unless you count the "you're about to be f'ed in the a-hole" opening - I'm sure if Daniel Tosh made the same skit that would count) but she does often make jokes about rape. Considering the rhetoric was that people who do things that A-Plus doesn't like should be shunned and made into pariahs this seems like remarkable tolerance, especially given the number of people who have commented on the video how much they love Sara Silverman.

It seems obvious to me that when she says "you're about to be f'ed in the a-hole" she's means that that's a really bad thing her "joke" here can't be read as condoning rape.
A quote from zooterkin's link:
" As Maya said in the Weekly Feminist Reader: “If there’s one thing the Daniel Tosh episode has taught us, I hope it is that rape jokes can be funny.” It’s not that the topic is off limits for comedy, it’s just that jokes that target victims and perpetuate rape culture make you a lazy *******. Humor is ideally suited to target our absurd culture around rape, though."

I'm sure Silverman is a pretty funny comedian.

I'd still rather join the Stone Cutters than pretend to be as privileged as to post on a slacktivism site like a+.

No one can be all things to all people all the time.

This is very true Paulhoff. And when a+ say they are starting a club that deliberately excludes old, white males for whatever reason they choose, they are thinking the same thing.

That's not really the point. The A+ creed is that rape jokes are NOT FUNNY and that anyone who laughs at rape jokes are D-BAGS. But Sara Silverman makes plenty of rape jokes including ones about being molested as a child, not to highlight the struggles of rape victims but to be edgy.

Essentially there are no hard and fast rules in A+ and whether you are going to be condemned or applauded largely depends on their mood, that was the point I was making.

She does more than just rape jokes, as I'm sure you're aware. Apparently she's quite the professional racist too but this isn't really about Silverman. She makes people laugh. She's not trying to change the world with her new fangled inclusive exclusive club.

Excludes me, someone that is a war vet, has been an atheist since 7, that has been for the rights of all people EXCLUDING NONE.

I agree. The only joke a comedian is not allowed to make is the one that isn't funny. Nothing is off the table, that's the comedian's creed.

But A+ doesn't agree. There are some subjects you CANNOT joke about. Except if it's someone we like making the jokes and then it's OK.

Well, at least they are consistent; they hate all old, white, men, but you are OK if your name starts with PZ...

I was thinking of e-mailing Richard Carrier to try to talk him out of atheismplus as I generally like him, even though we have our differences. But given the (even slight) risk of getting my name and e-mail published as the sexist/misogynist/douchebag, I discarded that idea.

Treat everyone and every living thing with as much respect as a human can, with the knowledge that all people make mistakes from time to time, so get over yourself and sometimes say yes to a cup of coffee when offered.

End of rules.

Do I have to drink the coffee?

I don't like coffee...
