This comment made me think, I would guess that most "atheist issues" (if there really are such things) are very much first world problems. Most people dealing with true disadvantages probably have better things to worry about, hence their failure to join atheist groups/movements.

I think that atheism, as we know it, is pretty much a first world issue. Skeptism is not as it crosses cultical and religious barriers.

Could you please give a link, or a little more detail? I went immediately to the A+ website, and the forum seems to be operating normally.

Well, actually........... I didn't read anything on Facebook. I just saw the "Morgan Freeman has died" hoax on Facebook and thought it would be nice if A+ really did die, so I posted that I read it had on Facebook.

It made me happy for a few minutes, and as a hedonist that's important.

Thanks for bursting my happy bubble! :D

Old white men! The horror! Let's put all the young white women on an ark and let it rain for 40 days and 40 nights.

Being an old white man, I offer myself up as the Captain of said ark. Someone's got to repopulate.

Shucks, sorry bout that. I've been too busy for the last few days to go online much, and a few days is a long time on the internet. Hell, I hadn't even heard about the Morgan Freeman hoax! So alas, your joke went right over my head... :o

I seem to recall Richard Dawkins comparing the plight of western bloggers with much more disadvantaged people. It didn't end well.

I would say that secularism would do more to help people in many situations than advancing atheism does. There is a worrying and counterproductive tendency some atheists to equate atheism with secularism when they are not the same at all.

Heh, my comment was more towards the "Why aren't more minorities joining atheist groups?" question than towards the "Who really has it bad?" question (the context of the Dawkins' quote), but I see your point.

Absolutely, which is why I am puzzled at the apparent hostility towards Human Secularism.

Absolutely, which is why I am puzzled at the apparent hostility towards Human Secularism.

It's threefold. Firstly humanist organizations don't tend to have large promotions of non white members and tend to have more male than female members. This is seen as a failure of the humanist movement.

Secondly humanism isn't directly concerned with the radical identity politics of the tumblr social justice crowd who make up a large part of the a+ base. Being an effective and organized group who can help is no good if you aren't ideologically pure.
And lastly a+ comes to us from the new atheist movement. They aren't secularusts they are mostly anti-thiests.

Now it starts to make sense. I couldn't figure out precisely why the attitude to humanism was so hostile. It's difficult to follow from the outside.

I wonder what is the opinion of A+ about Honey Boo Boo and kids pageants (just saw a commercial on that stupid show).

Somewhat related, PZ Myers has put up a post of a Sarah Silverman skit.

Naturally this has been met with unanimous approval in the comments. Gosh darn it, they all love Sarah Silverman. Um... I guess they have changed policy on people who make rape jokes.

But she's a woman and a minority who says things that they agree with so she's perfectly fine to say things like this. I think it's a similar reason as to why we haven't heard anyone called Natalie Reed a douchebag even though she doesn't want to be part of Atheism+.
