lol!
"So if you were following the absurd manufactured shoe controversy, and you were feeling irritated or frustrated about it (or just baffled by how unbelievably dumb it was), and you felt inspired to do something about it — here’s something you can do."
"shoe controversy" copyright Greta Christina.
I'd never heard of the shoe controversy until now. I'm not saying that Greta was
wrong to buy shoes after soliciting donations to help her with cancer treatment. Probably wasn't the wisest move to blog about her new shiny shoes though.
Also I like her
explanation afterwards as to why she bought
expensive shoes:
" A pair of well-made comfortable shoes that will last for years, bought largely to be worn in professional settings, is not an extravagant expenditure."
Not really the point. Somebody who was genuinely impoverished doesn't get to choose expensive shoes now to save the expense of replacing them later. Before I was in a comfortable financial position I would buy cheap shoes when my old cheap shoes wore out because that's what I could afford. It's the
Sam Vimes' "Boots" theory of Socio-Economic Injustice.
While I don't think there is a reasonable claim of controversy over her buying shoes with donated money, her reasoning actually makes the case against her.
1. Expensive shoes last longer
2. People said that she should buy something fun
3. When you donate money you don't get to dictate how it is spent*
4. Men buying shoes is a legitimate expense but women buying shoes is considered frivolous
Well 2 and 4 contradict each other. Was it a legitimate expense or was it fun? You don't get to say "Nobody would say that men buy shoes because they like shoes so why is it different for women?" in the same paragraph as "Ooh I love shoes!"
* I would take exception to 3. If you donated money to, for example, a cancer charity only to find out that the bulk of your donation went to pay the commission of the salesperson who persuaded you to donate then you would be miffed at having donated. Sure, you don't get to say where the money will be spent. But if it is mis-spent then you're going to think twice about donating again.
I was thinking maybe something else...
I shudder to think
A girl with no shoes and no food, living under a tree in Africa***, might think the A Plussers are...oh, I don't know...privileged?
Luxury. I used to dream of living under a tree.
