Astrology Readings.

My pleasure.

The best types of studies would focus on one specific aspect of astrology and attempt to show whether or not a correlation between that one aspect and real life is true. For example, if astrological readings can predict compatibility between people, take the charts of five pairs of people and see which of those should or should not have had successful relationships with each other. Compare that to the actual relationship history (divorce, separation, marital stability, or at least the equivalent for same-sex couples, etc.). This gives an objective and theoretically reproducible avenue for study. Anything else leads to the vague waffle problem we have seen here.

And yes, studies of this type have never reliably shown any real correlation.

I think that one possible study involving entire reading would have certain number of people which are strange and having traits of different signs.
But it may be used by astrologers as cop-out...

I'm still waiting to find out how and why Jupiter is connected to clergymen. What was Jupiter's job before there were any clergymen Slayer?

Slayer, I'd like to know the answer to this: how can astrology work, exactly ? I mean, Jupiter, for instance, and for all intents and purposes, exerts the same amount of force on every human being. Same for all the stars and planets. I'm trying to understand how it would work.

I'm still waiting for an (intelligible) explanation of how and why the planet Jupiter is connected with clergymen.Unbate your breath.

When a Christian is "born again", do they get a new sign?

What if someone found the lord at the exact moment that makes them a triple scorpio?
That could be trouble.

SlayerofCliffracers, if you're willing to take a shot at doing a reading for a new member with no previous post history, go ahead and amaze me. My partner will assist me with assessing the results in case I'm seriously in denial about some aspects of my personality.

I was born on June 1st 1982 at 8:12 PM in Jyväskylä, Finland, and I currently reside in the Finnish city of Tampere. Is there anything else about me you'd absolutely need to know?

Uh, to be fair, he did say he wasnt going to be able to post again until next weekend.

This is my only post until probably next weekend except Starthinkers reading. First I've got History Books to read and then I've got University to attend and read more History Books.

Uh, to be fair, he did say he wasnt going to be able to post again until next weekend.
He did indeed.

Though there's little point in him continuing this conversation. He's said nothing the regulars here haven't heard dozens of times before, he's proved incapable of marshalling any decent arguments or evidence in favour of the things he's decided to believe in, and his mind is clearly firmly closed to the arguments and evidence against them. All he seems to want to do is keep insisting that people who choose to consider all arguments and evidence, both for and against, are the ones with closed minds.

Well, maybe "Astrological standards" are just too weak. If the predictions astrology makes have to be vague, then they had better be very accurate, because otherwise it's virtually identical to astrology not working. Do that make sense to you?

They are weak. The problem is that people start with Astrological theory and then force the evidence to fit the theory. They behave in a highly similar fashion to Skeptics despite being the total opposite to Skeptics in one crucial fashion.

They decide what evidence is valid based upon a pre-established theory.

You're really happy with it? Because it seems unsatisfactory to me. Let's go over the results of your second reading with Godless Dave again.
Hits: 5
Misses: 4
Partial: 5

Now, that doesn't seem very impressive. I noticed that you rationalized some of the misses, like so:

I am happy with it because the misses all falsified what I merely read online and the hits confirm what I have previously observed.

As far as I am concerned, the need to constantly be right, is the source of most of Astrology's problems.

Because at any sign of weakness, the Skeptics descend and derive from a specific theoretical failiure the invalidity of all Astrology.

That's not necessarily true. You're saying that if he had a family, he might be protective of them just like the reading says. But you have no way of knowing that for sure, so this at best would have to count as an "unknown," not a hit. But personally, I think the prediction "You work particularly hard for the wellbeing of your family." tends to indicate someone to whom family is important, and since he doesn't have family, I would qualify this as more of a miss.

I never tried to make it as a hit. I merely tried to make it not a miss.

If he specifically says "BIG MISS," I take that to mean he is pretty sure, and I'm surprised you don't also.

I am actually torn between two possible Astrological explanations.

One is that Saturn/Mercury conjunction is still connecting to singing but this is invalidated by the opposition to Neptune which rules Music.

One is that the Saturn/Mercury conjunction's is a Neutral variable. Remember we derived the opposite conclusion specifically in opposition to the opposite claim that it would impede communication derived from the murky realms of theory.

Then you should have said that before, during his reading. Otherwise, you could simply be interpreting his chart in such a way to explain away your mistakes. Next time you make a reading, say things like this during the actual reading, or there's no way we can count them. So this still has to be counted as a definite miss.

Trouble is I got the claim not from experiance but from a third source. I had actually no idea what it did of my own, I got it from a third source. I therefore tend to trust despite myself the third source to have some basis for their own claim.

But good advice, I will try to determine in future what is solid and what is a 'bit of a stretch during the reading'.

You shouldn't judge someone based on their avatar. I don't know Godless Dave all that well, but if you asked me if he was a rebellious troublemaker simply based on his activity here, I would certainly say no. The best I can say based on his avatar is that he has a sense of humor. And besides that, you really can't judge a person's personality based on how they act on the internet at all.

Yes. However given that the Avatar itself expressed the outward image of a person, it may correspond to the 1st House in the Internet.

Again the 1st House is often hid behind the 12th House, which is our 'false image'. The 12th House is the house of masks.

So the Avatar could correspond to the 12th House rather than the 1st.

So, even not counting the ones for which he said "mostly a miss," and the guess about his family, it seems your reading still has 3 very solid misses, and only 5 very solid hits. That seems fairly poor for a reading in which most of the guesses are vague generalities that apply to most people. But you disagree, you were impressed with this reading. Then let me ask you: 1. can you understand why I am not impressed? 2. can you see why I think your standard of accuracy for astrology is much too low?

I perfectly understand why you are not impressed. I am not particularly impressed with myself.

My standard of accuracy for Astrology is much too low? Well I am not Astrology, I am an Astrologer.

Astrology is actually inhumanly complex and it very easy to make mistakes. I have made mistakes simply by failing to notice things I had already derived at before.

Slayer, I'd like to know the answer to this: how can astrology work, exactly ? I mean, Jupiter, for instance, and for all intents and purposes, exerts the same amount of force on every human being. Same for all the stars and planets. I'm trying to understand how it would work.

Since you are so polite I will give you an in depth response explaining how Astrology might work.

Astrology is not based upon differences in the quantity of force that each planet exerts on each person. It is based upon the spatial relationship made between the objects in alignment to the Earth of which the observer is a part or directly to the observer (the sidereal/tropical zodiac dispute in a nutshell).

Two objects aligned so that they are paralell or close together tend to merge their energies (or information if you like). In my case, since Jupiter and the Sun are close together (from Earth perspective) Jupiter and Sun tend to be 'confused' so that whatever reminds me of the Sun reminds me of Jupiter and vice versa.

The opposite is the case with Pluto. Because Pluto is on the opposite side of the earth to the Sun and Jupiter, then their energies do not merge much, they remain utterly distinct. As a result things that remind me of the energy of Pluto tend to be concieved of as distinct and oppositional to the Sun and Jupiter.

When we are born, the barrage of sensory distractions maybe or something else mean that our connection to the nexus of planets is broken to a large extent. Thus our internal world fossilizes to a certain degree, but not entirely creating the natal charts. We now percieve the planets influences as 'external' influences, while our own fossilised pre-natal state we percieve as 'internal' influences.

To consider the mechanism which is refered to as the planetery nexus, I mean that everything in the universe transfers information about itself to everything else, regarding it's spatial location and other properties.

The Earth and all the other planets orbit the Sun, a remote object. They do so based upon the mass of the Sun. If their mass were greater than the Sun, the Sun would orbit them. Therefore some sort of mathematical calculation is made using two sets of variables, but 'in' both objects.

The Sun evidently is capable of 'informing' other objects as to it's mass. But why stop there? Can the mass of an object really be seperated from it's other properties? No it can't. So everything about the Sun is known to the Earth and since we are part of the Earth, we would know what the Earth knows.

Slayer, do you realize that every supporter of nonsense uses this line of thinking ? What sort of failure, exactly, would be needed for you to understand that Astrology is bunk ?

What sort of failiure would be enough to convince the Chemist, the Physicist, the Biologist that their respective disciplines were bunk?

The only way to disprove all Astrology would be to demonstrate that the position of the planets was a Neutral variable that has no correlation to events on Earth. That is to kill the core hypothesis of Astrology.

Well, at least you read it. I'm glad you read this because I found it to be informative.

It is very worrying to know that James Randi actually knows something about Astrology itself. He isn't like your average Skeptic that based upon their comments knows next to nothing about the Astrology they disagrees with.

Does anyone know James Randis exact birth time? One of the things I noted about James Randi is how little his Horoscope is actually ultra-Skeptical. It's far milder than most of the charts of the people on this forum I've seen.

I guess the Sheep follow the Shepherd, but the Shepherd isn't a Sheep.

[/QUOTE]
Right. Please stick to the word "factors," then. Using the word "theory" for them is very confusing. But if you want to use the word theory for the overall idea of astrology, that makes more sense.
Astrology itself is only a theory if Biology, Chemistry or Physics are theories.

Astrology has theories. These are distinct from factors. Factors are observable phenonoma. Theories are claims made about the effects of Factors by Astrologers.

I see. Well, I'm not quite sure of the relevance of increased risk of having a car accident. Also, 13% is a fairly small difference. How did he get those stats again, exactly? (Anyone besides Slayer, please feel free to weigh in about this.)

Because it constitutes 'proof' of sorts that at least the location of Stars aren't Neutral factors. This validates the core hypothesis, which validates Astrology itself.

He got those stats from an insurance company I think and compared the total number of accidents by Tauros Suns, against the total % of the population than Tauros Suns make up, eliminated any non-statistically significant percentages that are within the range of chance and then arrived at the conclusion that 4 Sun Signs had an effect on one's ability to drive safely. All the others were eliminated as Neutral.

I am afraid I have left Astrology file at University but I remember what signs had an effect.

Tauros are the worst drivers.
Virgos are the second worst drivers.
Scorpios are the second best drivers.
Leos are the best drivers.

Astrologically I would explain it basically by saying that Tauros, by it's inflexible nature, tends to make people rather clumsy, due to the rigidity of the personality.

Virgo by it's focus on small details tends to miss the bigger picture, failing to see everything that's going on around them because they notice a small danger.

Scorpio by virtue of being the opposite of Tauros would be rather agile and tends to react quickly and flexibly.

Leo is the best because Leo's have a social 'Sixth sense' and a strong sense of responsability for other people. They are busy working out where everyone is and most importantly where THEY fit into the picture.

Nope. What are you talking about in regards to the planets, anyway? What does it mean, "have Mercury there"? Just curious.

Mercury is the planet that specifically governs writing, speech and communication with others. Mercury never goes more than 1 sign away from the Sun.

I freely admit I have no idea what you are, but I will guess you are a Scorpio anyhow.

Well, I would think not, because if you had known about it at the time, you may have dismissed all of it. Then let me ask you another question... I assume you know and understand what the Forer effect is now, correct? How do you know that what you seem to experience through astrology can't all be explained by this effect?

That is an invalid objection. The mere possibility of your experiances being wrong does not constitute a reason to dismiss something.

I know precisely how I don't fit my Sun Sign as well as how I do. The following are true.

Stubborn.
Routine Orientated.
Lives to Eat.
Unbothered by sameness in material surroundings and experiances.
Copes extremely poorly with change and sudden interruptions.
Tends to continue on the same course when it would perhaps be wiser to back down and consider other options.
Slow to respond.

The following are false (with precise Astrological explanations).

Practically orientated ideas (8th House Sun, 8th House opposes 2nd House which is of a materialistic, practical nature)
Slow moving (square Mars, gives an overdose of energy)
Well I would say it's just human nature, because everyone ultimately wants to be liked by other people, and therefore they will exaggerate various things that make them look more interesting. Can you understand why you saying it's because "everyone has a Jupiter" seems a bit silly to me, when there's already a natural explanation that makes more sense?

Also, if everyone has a "Jupiter" somewhere, doesn't this make predictions somewhat useless? What's the point if astrology says the same thing about everyone?
Everyone but me. I have no desire to exaggerate anything about myself to make myself interesting.

You misunderstood what I am saying though.

All I am saying is that Jupiter represents something that exists in everyone. A quality as it were.

This quality has effects. The primary effect of Jupiter is to make things bigger and better. From this effect come secondery effects. When combined with the Sun, which represents ego, Jupiter tends to make the ego 'bigger and better', which tends to make people arrogant. Arrogance is the tertiary effect.

Tell me again how astrology predicts that your characteristics associated with your "sun sign" are supposed to be exaggerated, and what that means. Does that mean your characteristics with that sun sign should be very close to 100% accurate? Is there any way for you to identify ahead of time which people should have "exaggerated" characteristics?

Because the effect of Jupiter is to increase, to make bigger, anything that enjoys a positive relationship to Jupiter (for instance is conjunct) will tend to be exaggerated for starters.

It is my personal observation that things in the 8th, 10th, 12th and 1st Houses tend to be exaggerated.

What enjoys a negative relationship with something (for instance is opposed) tends to be reduced.

If two things have a negative relationship, the stronger tends to increase at the expense of the latter. Ultimately a lot comes down to guessing what 'side' will come out on top.

Quite often planets will diminish and even 'kill' other planets in order to grow in power over the person, to a large extent this is the basis of our characters but since all the planets represent a fundermental part of us, the 'death' of any planet has rather evil effects.

People whose Jupiters are 'killed' become depressed for instance.

Lots of people have that tendency, though.

And we have to explain Astrologically why this is so on an individual basis.

I see. Do you know ahead of time if someone's Sun is "weak", before you read them? If so, then can you explain a bit about how astrology is useful for whom people the Sun is "weak?"

I don't read people based upon Sun Signs alone. The Sun is weak based upon the actual relationship between planets. If there are lot of planets in a hostile relationship to the Sun and they are very strong, the Sun will be weakened. As a result, the Sun Sign will become redundant, since the position of the Sun's key adversity is what really matters.

Anti-Solar and Solar people would have different traits based not upon the Signs the Sun is in BUT THE VERY NATURE OF THE SUN ITSELF!

People who will quietly put up with abuse from others. People who sacrifice themselves for something else they consider higher and better. The humble, the weak-willed, the self-sacrificing. None of these people would ever fit their Sun Signs.

I'm still waiting to find out how and why Jupiter is connected to clergymen. What was Jupiter's job before there were any clergymen Slayer?

Jupiter has nothing directly to do with clergymen. Instead Jupiter has to do with 'bigger things', that is the bigger questions or reality. The kind of stuff religion claims to answer.

Therefore Jupiter is assosiated with Clergymen, because Clergymen are assosiated with Religion. The reason Jupiter is associated with Religion is because Jupiter is assosiated with the kind of big questions that religion is concerned with.

This is because in essence Jupiter is something akin to "bigger" or "higher" or "above". I say akin, because it doesn't exactly correspond to any of these things but has it's own unique nature that does not care to comform itself to our language.

When a Christian is "born again", do they get a new sign?

What if someone found the lord at the exact moment that makes them a triple scorpio?
That could be trouble.

Since 'born again' people tend to avoid Astrologers like the plague, there is no way to verify whether the above is true.

Natal Chart of Klimax (or whoever else may be hiding behind him)

You are principally a restless person, not a person that is content with a limited range of experiences but one that is forever on the move to the next thing. When you perceive of a goal you are relentless in pursuing it, but having achieved it you have little interest in dwelling upon your spoils, you prefer to move on to other things.

You are constantly shifting and re-inventing yourself according to the demands of your present goal. You speak clearly and are rarely misunderstood by others. You are also an honest person, combined with your above mentioned secrecy this means you likely cleverly conceal a lot of information without giving false information.

This is a stretch to derive, but I do not determine you enjoy discussing religion and philosophy much with other people. You tend to see debating higher philosophical and religious issues as pointless.

Your will tend to be ruled by your instincts and emotions, including your sexual instincts. You have a strong imagination, this however is a bit of a stretch to derive from the chart.

It is again a bit of a stretch to derive, but it would appear that you tend to lose focus and energy when faced with a large task, being prone to become rather lazy, something which thwarts your strongly determined nature. You make sure to conceal your lack of energy from others, by appearing to them as highly active and dynamic. This is a stretch, but you do this by taking part of co-operative team activities like for instance football rather than by being assertive to other people.

However you have plenty of desire or instinct for action, you simply find that you are unable to sustain the energy for a bigger project.

This is a bit of a stretch, but you also tend to become depressed. You may be on anti-depressive drugs, but then again that would be a stretch on top of another stretch.

This is probably cold-readable but it would appear that your core philosophy/religion is probably at least somewhat Libertarian and Rationalist in character. It has a strong political element.

However your philosophy/religion is strongly influenced by intense likes and dislikes towards people and concepts which tend to limit your vision of the world by focusing you upon your own relationships to other people and skewing your judgements. This is my best attempt to precisely interpret the aspect in question which I struggle to get my head around.

Now the strange thing about you, is that ultimately the above mentioned political philosophy very strongly dominates development your development in life but not necessarily for the best (0.03% is close). That it is very important to you and you are it’s activist is one interpretation. Whatever happens however, it would appear that you will be and are popular throughout your development in life.

The nature of the development is not strongly indicated, there is an indication that it will be something related to history, your family, your heritage or in a final stretch your country. Combined with the above it could indicate something along the lines of political historian/political scientist/political philosopher but that is a stretch.

Finally it would appear that your progress will be challenged by a rebellion, I am unsure if it is referring to your own rebellion or that of others against you, but in any case it threatens to destroy or set-back your progress in life unless you can successfully deal with it. It may refer to rebelliousness at school, university or work.

Hey SlayerofCliffracers - Will you do me?

Natal Chart of Klimax (or whoever else may be hiding behind him)

Partially.
You are constantly shifting and re-inventing yourself according to the demands of your present goal. You speak clearly and are rarely misunderstood by others. You are also an honest person, combined with your above mentioned secrecy this means you likely cleverly conceal a lot of information without giving false information.

Bolded is incredibly wrong as many would say.
Underlined is correct, however no extra poweres needed to see that.(In RL otr from posts!)

This is a stretch to derive, but I do not determine you enjoy discussing religion and philosophy much with other people. You tend to see debating higher philosophical and religious issues as pointless.

As you note it is stretch and mostly wrong.

Your will tend to be ruled by your instincts and emotions, including your sexual instincts. You have a strong imagination, this however is a bit of a stretch to derive from the chart.

Completely wrong.(No psychiatrist or psychologist seen) I note you said stretch.

Combined with the above it could indicate something along the lines of political historian/political scientist/political philosopher but that is a stretch.

Nice try,but underlined cannot become true.(Stretch!) Since future is subject I don't evaluate it otherwise, but note that it lists every major influence.

Finally it would appear that your progress will be challenged by a rebellion, I am unsure if it is referring to your own rebellion or that of others against you, but in any case it threatens to destroy or set-back your progress in life unless you can successfully deal with it. Again future, but rebellion of any kind is unlikely at best.

Thank you for reading.(My first :D )

My own evaluation is:
Partially:2
Wrong:7
Correct: 5
Neither:1
Unrated(future):3

I don't know how significant cold reading was,but my posts are unusuable for coldreading.(In my opinion.if others disagree, state it please.)

If there are any problems in my evaluation, tell me.Thanks.

It was my own person, the one behind account Klimax.

I know, I just add that because the first person gave me someone elses data. I like to remind myself of this so as to discourage cold reading on my own part.

Partially.

Call this a devious copout but I wouldn't expect you to give a particularly definate answer anyway. What I basically did there is invert Tauros, my own sign because Scorpio is the opposite sign to Tauros. I constructed basically an Anti-Me. Maybe too strongly. But then you asked for precision, which in practice means an extreme claim.

Bolded is incredibly wrong as many would say.
Underlined is correct, however no extra poweres needed to see that.(In RL otr from posts!)

I honesty knew nothing about you before you appeared on my thread.

As you note it is stretch and mostly wrong.

I was not going to add that on the basis of the kind of person who goes on an internet forum doesn't tend to be of that nature. However that would be Cold Reading, so I added it anyway.

Bolded:Wrong.Emotions are getting into play for last three years only occasionaly.
Underlined:Correct.(But Cold reader might get it as well.)

Ouch!:mad::mad: I guess I should have determined based upon the fact the Sun has 2 more planets backing it up, that the Sun would dominate the Moon and not the other way around. The worst miss in the bundle definately.

Bolded:Correct.
Underlined:Wrong

Well actually it's a dilemma. Because the nature of the 12th House is actually a false perception of weakness which leads to exaggeration in actual reality.

This is basically what we nailed as being the case on Bob Marks, in order to resolve the contradiction between what the professional Astrologers keep saying based upon feedback from their clients, leading to notions of weakness and the obvious fact that public figures most prominant planets are usually in the 12th House.

Partially correct.

That makes sense because the nature of Scorpio is at loggerheads with what the opposition in question would mean.

Trouble is in practice is if I am to give a precise answer that isn't internally contradictory I must choose one side of the other in a contradiction. Or do I?

Completely wrong.(No psychiatrist or psychologist seen) I note you said stretch.

Happy to hear it. I said stretch because it isn't the case that Jupiter is that weak in your chart. It can definately hold it's own against a puny rock like Mars ;);) even if it happens to be allied with the eastern horizen.

Completely wrong on Libertarian.Completly correct on rationalist.

Yes I could have derived the latter by application of Cold Reading though.

Actually the meaning of the Trine aspect wouldn't be strong enough to make one a Libertarian. Really it means something more like not a Fascist. But how many people would admit to not being Fascists?

I must remind myself again that Trines are not positive, they mean simply a lack of something (conflict) not anything positive.

Bit strange, isn't it.Neither Correct or wrong.

Venus can be a pain in the backside when it comes to interacting with other planets in anything other than a simple oppose/conjunct way.

Bolded is wrong.Rest is unjudgeable.(Too much room for any aditional interpretations either way!)

I guess that interpretation is sort of contradictory with the rebellion theme I mention later, anyway it is only a Trine which only represents harmony. You are wise not to give me any definate answers on the rest, however it is annoying to not know given as I mentioned the striking nature of the Jupiter square to Midheavan.

Nice try,but underlined cannot become true.(Stretch!) Since future is subject I don't evaluate it otherwise, but note that it lists every major influence.

What do you mean by every major influence? You mean like your education and such or your interests in life. I am trying to nail the meaning of Cancer+7th House Jupiter square. If what you are saying is what I hope you are saying, I am rather overjoyed.

Again future, but rebellion of any kind is unlikely at best.

It isn't future though. It's future, present and past. That you definately disagreed with my above statement on Venus suggests that your development cannot be entirely harmonious.

You should have classified misses on stretches differently from other misses, taking that into account I still am not unhappy with my results. :):):) The main reason is that I have previously identified what was as I said 'a stretch' in many of my failiures.

Don't worry about cold reading. The die is sort of cast already. I am just interested in getting feedback which Astrologically you shouldn't give me (isn't that reverse psychology?) about your life in order to establish how things are working/not working in practice.

I am particularly interested in the meaning of the Jupiter 7th House orb which squares the MC at such a tight orb.

They are weak. The problem is that people start with Astrological theory and then force the evidence to fit the theory.

Well, if you agree with me that astrological standards of accuracy are weak, then you should understand why I think astrology doesn't work.

As far as I am concerned, the need to constantly be right, is the source of most of Astrology's problems.

I think that "the need to constantly be right" is a necessity for astrology, because otherwise it becomes obvious that there is nothing to it. Since most of the predictions astrology makes are very general and vague, they darn well should be constantly right. If they aren't, it's identical to astrology not working.

But good advice, I will try to determine in future what is solid and what is a 'bit of a stretch during the reading'.

Yes, since I realize that I am probably going to fail to convince you that astrology is bunk, then at the very least I can give you some advice about how to test these things properly for skeptics. Naturally, any information you try to provide after the reading, in response to what people say, is going to be seen by skeptics as finegaling/cheating. So, you need to make sure that the reading is complete... there should be no room later for you to qualify misses as "good misses."

So are you saying you think the failure is your own, and not astrology's? That if you had just interpreted his chart better, you would have been more accurate? I disagree. Astrology says that the stars/planets determine our personalities. If that's true, then it shouldn't need so much interpretation from you, it should be apparent.

Perhaps the reason it is so "inhumanly complex" is just to obscure the fact that it doesn't work. What exactly is it that makes you so sure it's working? Is that something you know, or something you feel? Because I personally believe that you don't "know" astrology is working, but rather that you "feel" like it is working. In fact I would go so far as to speculate that you desire it to work. Would you say I'm right?

What sort of failiure would be enough to convince the Chemist, the Physicist, the Biologist that their respective disciplines were bunk?

Actually, it would be very easy to do so. In fact any scientist would love to prove some commonly accepted theory to be false, because they would get a lot of attention for doing so. The difference is that scientific theories are [bfalisifiable. They say that if you do a certain thing, there will be a certain result. This is very easy to test, and you can even do it yourself, just do that certain thing and see if the result is what science says it should be.

The only way to disprove all Astrology would be to demonstrate that the position of the planets was a Neutral variable that has no correlation to events on Earth. That is to kill the core hypothesis of Astrology.

Yes, unfortunetly astrology is difficult to disprove, but not because it's real... rather because it's claims are non-falsifiable, like I said before. Astrology doesn't say anything concrete, it vaguely makes a lot of predictions that sometimes are true, and sometimes aren't. Because the core hypothesis of astrology is so wishy-washy, and non-falsifiable, that makes it hard to disprove, in the same way that if I sell you a pen and tell you it's a lucky pen, it would be incredibly hard for you to prove it isn't.

Both astrology and the lucky pen are very hard to disprove; but both are also weak, suspect claims. Do you see what I mean?

It is very worrying to know that James Randi actually knows something about Astrology itself. He isn't like your average Skeptic that based upon their comments knows next to nothing about the Astrology they disagrees with.

Does anyone know James Randis exact birth time? One of the things I noted about James Randi is how little his Horoscope is actually ultra-Skeptical. It's far milder than most of the charts of the people on this forum I've seen.

Well, obviously it's not surprising to me that the charts would be drastically wrong, however I do want to comment that I sincerely appreciate your honesty in mentioning this. I like people like you... you argue fairly and will even mention a fact which seems to undermine your case. As I also try hard to argue fairly, I am certainly not going to take that fact and shove it down your throat, but I will mention that perhaps you should pay less attention to your charts, and more attention to why Randi disbelieves in astrology, and what his reasons are.

If you want to truly know about a person, the best way is to talk to them. It's a far better method than any chart. Perhaps this is something that we even agree on...!

Astrology has theories. These are distinct from factors. Factors are observable phenonoma. Theories are claims made about the effects of Factors by Astrologers.

Well, I hate to play the word police on you, but using the word "theory" in this way will confuse people. If you are using the word "theory" to mean "claim," my suggestion is to just use the word claim (maybe "factor" was a bad suggestion on my part.) If you've noticed, I've been using the word "predictions," but "claims" works equally well.

Because it constitutes 'proof' of sorts that at least the location of Stars aren't Neutral factors. This validates the core hypothesis, which validates Astrology itself.

No, I'm afraid it doesn't. I'll go ahead and quote Hokulele's answer on why it doesn't, since he says it better than I could:

The other type of study that keeps getting dragged into this is the type where a very large number of people are examined for personality traits, and this is then compared to astrological events (which is basically the methodology of Gunter Sachs' study). This type has a number of problems, including possible statistical analysis errors. The main problem is that any correlation will be seen as significant, even when it may not be. For example, if you do a study of babies and which direction they were moving when they were born (assuming natural birth and not C-section), you might be able to find a correlation between something as obscure as birth direction and musical ability. Are the two correlated? Who knows?

I have yet to see any study or test of these types where the results are unambiguous and consistently replicated.

So the Gunter Sach's study you quoted uses a flawed testing method. I asked him for a better testing method, and this was his suggestion:

Do you know of any studies like this which show positive results for astrology?

I freely admit I have no idea what you are, but I will guess you are a Scorpio anyhow.

Nope, afraid not. I admit that I am a pretty unique person, personality wise, so even if astrology were true it would probably not work so well on me.

That is an invalid objection. The mere possibility of your experiances being wrong does not constitute a reason to dismiss something.

But it's not simply "possiblity," it's a valid counter-explanation for why astrology seems to "work," even if the stars were "neutral factors." So it's not even worth considering alternative explanations? Why not?

Thanks for your kind words, and I wanted to say I enjoy reading your posts in this thread as well, since a fresh set of eyes on old issues are always helpful.

But as a minor nitpick, I'm a she. :)
