Arsonist strikes at new Mosque location.

I'm not going to divert very far and make this an argument about the Texas case, but if your only defense of the place is based on the segment from The Daily Show you should probably just quit while you're ahead. There was harassment, but none of it to the level of firebombing the building.

Holy Carp......I thought this thread was about the Murfreesboro arson.

Firebombs, Buildings, whar, wahr, where?

This thread is about some idiot/s in Tennessee that are trying to terrorize some muslim folks from building their Mosque in a cow field next to a nice christian church.

Given the responses so far I wholehardedly agree.

I'll add yours to the inane.

Now, meanwhile in Murfreesboro, there is an interesting twist to the story that is not being widely reported.

~snip~

This increase in scrutiny came after a piece of heavy equipment owned by Ole South Excavating of Murfreesboro was set on fire Saturday. The company is clearing land for the new Islamic Center.

~snip~

There's also evidence outlined in a police report that someone vandalized two back loaders also owned by Ole South at an entirely different location. That incident also happened early Saturday morning.

Hmmnnnnnnnn...

It didn't help that one of the candidates for Governor came out with "Islam is not a religion ... it is a cult." We here in TN seem to work at making ourselves look as stupid as possible.

I also liked this quote...

All that BS talk of Sharia law in the US is starting to take hold in the bible belt.

The irony being that they all say, "Have you read the Koran? Do you know how violent it is????" obviously never having read their own Old Testament with the same standard.

I was happy to see that a couple of hundred people showed up in a demonstration to express consternation at the vandalism, including some preachers and priests.

Let's quote the whole of that bit:

NewsChannel 5 has learned that the vandalism happened after the center received an ugly, threatening voicemail earlier in the week. The caller disparaged Islam and then said, "You need to get out of the country now."

There's also evidence outlined in a police report that someone vandalized two back loaders also owned by Ole South at an entirely different location. That incident also happened early Saturday morning.

Some believe this is an effort to try to intimidate contractors into not working on the project. Ole South's owner says he will continue to honor the contract.

So they most certainly did get threatening phone calls to the mosque, and the belief is that they don't want any contractor to work for the mosque.

If that's true, it's certainly some nasty bigotry. However one *could* postulate that the vandalism is a disgruntled employee and separate from the threatening calls.

I'm of the opinion they're related.

I'm not sayin' they aren't related, but whoever likes to play with gas and matches in Murfreesboro, has some inside knowledge on where Ole South parks his work toys.

It probably came as a surprise to whoever the arsonist is, that his local friends down at the county office aren't gonna sweep this one under the rug.

It shouldn't take the Feds long to figure this one out, and when they do, I hope they go for hate crimes and domestic terrorism.

Given the nature of construction work and construction workers, the "disgruntled employee" theory is not to far off.

I wonder if Ole South is a union shop?

Well, at least now the bigots can honestly say that the mosque has been linked to terrorism.

Oh, please do elaborate. I'd like to see how you can do this without generalizing or being insulting toward construction workers or contractors.

Well having worked in the construction business for many years and having worked with various trades, I can say that I have run into my fair share of “disgruntled employees.”

Guys can be angry at their current employer, their former employer, their future employer, whatever. I’d like to say that the majority of construction workers are mature, reasonable and rational human beings, but even if you had a rate of 1% of angry-at-everyone types, there is a very real certainty that any moderate sized company will hire and fire one of these types over the course of a few years.

Most times layoffs are a simple fact of life in the construction trades, but if an employee is particularly disruptive, they can be expected to get a lot fewer callbacks than other workers. Guys can and do hold grudges against other employees, companies etc, for the stupidest of reasons.

If so that means... ?

Potential for other dynamics to be at work here.

A disgruntled bigoted employee, perhaps? I could see that.

I'm interested to find out what the feds will uncover. So far it's too vague to know what kind of stupidity we're seeing down there.

Not a bad try. Now, can you explain how this is qualitatively different from, well, every other profession?

Life isn't a Sherlock Holmes novel. Occam's Razor usually bears itself out.

The police report, obtained today by TPMmuckraker, is brief. But it does reveal two bits of information: One, that the engine was running on the destroyed machinery. Two, police observed someone in a car watching the fire from the road, who then drove away.

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsme...port_in_mosque_site_fire_engine_was_runni.php

Two possibilities come to mind.

1) disgruntled employee with an extra set of keys to the truck

2) someone left the engine running for some reason and the engine oil caught fire.

you don't know many construction workers, do you?

They're not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed.

Three uncles who are contractors, one a GC. I know enough, and even worked some summers in construction in my teens.

Still waiting for your explanation of what makes them different from every other profession? Remember that we're talking about being in relation to possibly having committed arson. Weak generalizations like "construction workers are dumb" really doesn't cut it as a qualitative difference that could lead to a higher probability of committing a crime when disgruntled than, say, a postman or a teacher, nor does it display how there would be any reason to consider that even close to as high a probability of an anti-Muslim action given the Muslim group had been receiving threatening phone calls.

So, if your only support for your comments amounts to "well, just look at them," then I really see no point in taking your comments seriously.

My comment was on what you posted. If you say there was more to it, then that part of your response is certainly valid.

But this is actually more of a "reverse" straw man. I responded to your actual post, not to what you wished you had posted in the way of evidence. I didn't create your position for you -- you are criticising me for not responding to your unstated position/evidece and how it differed from the example you actualy offered -- pig races. So climb down off the cross, already.

After reading that police "report", it only adds to the confusion. He doesn't say how the firefighters knew the engine was running, or if they shut it off, or if the fire stopped it from running.

But he does have a license # and address for the parked car...I'm sure by now they've checked that out.

I'm glad they have the Feds investigating this crime scene, rather than the yocal who crafted up that police report. It's kind of tough to read...

(carry on with your argument)

I didn't compare the two saying that both had been attacked by an arsonist. I compared the two in that both have been facing a difficult time in getting the authorities to take threats and harassing behavior against them seriously. And to that I still maintain the cases were similar. The Katy location has been bogged down by this stuff for nearly four years now, and still hasn't gotten the place built as a result. The Murfreesboro group is very likely to face the same type of problems, and for much the same reason: a general xenophobia and bigotry toward their religious affiliation.

You mean, a bigoted employee disgruntled because his employer is "palling around with terrorists", or whatever they call it these days?
