Arkansas GOP targets drag shows

"...traditionally worn by member of the opposite sex..."

That will get shot down SO quickly and embarrassingly if it ever comes to a prosecution. Seriously, these goofs have NO idea.

They do, it's all performative nonsense for their base.

When (if) it gets struck down they get to play the downtrodden martyrs against the degenerate libs.

Heads they win, tails you lose

And if the SCOTUS kills it...? The very judges installed by their idol, Trump, to enable such nonsense?

That is a much more serious issue. One I wouldn't have thought possible pre-Dodd, but here we are.

Okay. If that happened and legislatures were able to silence speech that the felt sexually threatening, be it to kids or their own sexual orientation*, it opens the door to allowing speech to be silenced for any intention law makers choose to project on to those making the speech. Much like a police shooting, it does not matter so much what is actually happening so long as the person who is in power feels threatened in some way.

* "That man in a dress was clearly designed and meant to seduce me!"

"Drag is a legitimate artistic expression and a human right. Leave us alone."

"Okay, fine."

"And initiating your children into the drag world is also a human right."

"No it ******* isn't."

"Bigot!"

Wow. Just, wow. That was a comment that made us all dumber for having read it. Almost makes me wonder if someone else is using your account.

Remember when fox hunting with hounds got banned in Britain and the toffs were recommended to take up drag hunting instead? Just want to check I didn't misunderstand something.

And yet 40%+ of Americans are happy to vote for them. The modern day GOP is just a symptom of a malaise.

The UK (and England in particular) has nothing to crow about given how popular the Tories are.

Anytime that I ponder that maybe this is the end, and maybe the GoP will return to some sort of normalcy. Then I hear opinions from a MAGA type and I think, nope, they are just a reflection of their voting base. Its never going to change. That's all this Arkansas bill is, its just appeasement to their base.

The GoP going back to normal would still be to the right of the Tories by my reckoning.

using clothing, makeup, or
5 other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to exaggerate the gender identity of the performer's opposite sex

FDR wearing traditional male clothing....

Well, at least they tried to come up with a stipulative definition for the sake of the proposed ban.

Code:
"Drag performance" means a performance:
2 (A) In which one (1) or more performers:
3 (i) [HILITE]Exhibits a gender identity that is different
4 from the performer's gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, or
5 other accessories that are traditionally worn by members of and are meant to
6 exaggerate the gender identity of the performer's opposite sex;[/HILITE] and
7 (ii) Sings, lip-synchs, dances, or otherwise
8 performs before an audience of at least two (2) persons for entertainment,
9 whether performed for payment or not; and
10 (B) That is intended to appeal to the prurient interest;

Wait, have I been spelling "lip-sync" wrong this whole time?

FFS, they would become apoplectic and head straight for the fainting couches if they ever encountered this one....

This is a gut feeling but I bet in conservatives brains "comic" drag performance occupies a different slot from "non-comic" drag lifestyle.

Someone putting on a dress because "LOL men dressing up like women is funny hardy har har" probably doesn't trigger them as much as someone, for the lack of better terminology, breaking genders norms and being serious about it.

Maybe, I'm ignorant, and honestly my main exposure to drag shows was this Patrick Swayze movie from decades ago... but aren't they pretty much all "LOL men dressing up like women is funny hardy har har" like that?

Sure if a drag show involves like stripping, and nudity, then I suppose it would be fair that it falls under the same laws and regulations as a strip club. But do they???

ETA: confusing... but I meant drag shows are usually/likely to be for comedic or entertainment value. Someone who dresses in drag all the time is likely not doing it for laughs. But, thats not a show.

Eddie Izzard?

Resolved: Nobody is saying that drag shows have the right to market to children, nor that there is any problem with blocking such efforts.
I think we can (almost?) all agree that children shouldn't be dragged along to sexy burlesque shows by their parents, regardless of the OEM parts of the performers.

That said, do you really want to restrict the rights of parents who don't share our views on such things?

Nobody light a match near all that straw!

The "OK, fine." response is where the stack is built. The GQP ain't "OK, fine" about it.

Eddie Izzard used to quite literally dress as a woman as part of a comedic show. Isn't he...or she(?)... now trans?

Eddie in the past used self-descriptors such as "action transvestite", "lesbian trapped in a man's body" and the like or would talk about being in either "girl mode" or "boy mode" at different times and would dress accordingly on stage. The manner of dress and the amount and style of make up rarely formed part of the comedy.

More recently Eddie has more clearly used "trans" language and terrminology.

Which ever way, still responsible for several of my favourite comedy routines and, according to several people I know, is a pretty decent person IRL.
