"An Arizona utility commissioner said he's willing to pull the plug on Los Angeles if the city goes through with a boycott of his state. In a letter to the city of LA, a member of Arizona's power commission said he would ask Arizona utility companies to cut off the power supply to Los Angeles. LA gets about 25 percent of its power from Arizona.
"That is one commissioner who has that idea -- whether he can do that or not is another idea," said LA Councilman Dennis Zine. "They are the ones who have to make the move, not us."
The commissioner's power grid play is in response to the city's approval of a resolution directing city staff to consider which contracts with Arizona can be terminated."

It seems like that they're following Newton's 3rd law here...
Well, this guy'd like to, but LA will go crying to the Feds, who will pull some "Interstate Commerce" crap out of a hat, and repeal the 3rd law--so LA-La land get to have their cake and eat it, too, through political posturing...

Well, Arizona's law is obviously wrong, so of course LA should be allowed to boycott the state, and of course Arizona must continue providing goods and services to LA anyway. Good thing we have a Federal Government to make sure the good guys always win!

Looks like we have us a mexican standoff. (Pun intended.)

You'd like to see hospitals go on emergency generators, stoplights go out, and security systems stop functioning? Do you think punishing an entire city for the actions of a minority is mature? At least boycotts can be targeted.

Stupid Constitution! Always in the way!

Perhaps Arizona shouldn't take part in interstate commerce if they don't want to live by its rules.

The power is being generated in a facility that Arizona does not have full control over. They can threaten this all they want but they don't really have the power to do it and is defending what is perceived as racism that important?

You've left out the more subtle yet just as pervasive damage that a boycott by LA can do to Arizona. Lost tourism and lower production means job losses. The actions by the City Council of LA are extremely dangerous. Arizona may retaliate. LA may choose to escalate. This kind of economic saber rattling can start civil wars. The demonization targeting Arizona, such as that propagated by the LA Times, adds fuel to the fire. And what's the point? So that the Democrats can get a few more Hispanic votes?

I'm a social liberal and my friends ask me why I don't vote Democrat more often. It's because of crap like this. I honestly can't tell if the morons in the LA government and media are children who are incapable of understanding the gravity of their actions or if they really are evil conniving machiavellians who will risk everything just to keep their jobs.

Personally, I'm not going to be terribly impressed with all this posturing until the California and Arizona state militias start to shoot it out. I want to see some action, dammit!

Oh, the sweet irony. A minority huh? You mean the elected government, right?

At least boycotts can be targeted.

Really? Because passing resolutions that ban all city employees from travelling to the state of Arizona (to hurt the tourism industry) and making plans to cancel contracts with companies from Arizona (not the government) with the express intention of damaging Arizona's economy is somehow "targeted"...right.

So, if I percieve some of your basic freedoms to be racism, does that mean you have to surrender them? FFS, perception is all that matters, isn't it? As long as someone percieves venal intent behind your actions, you simply have to cave to unreasonable interference. An octopus doesn't have enough legs to hold all the other shoes that would drop.

Why doesn't California just give in and pass laws making collective bargaining illegal for government employees? Many people percieve public employee unions as colluding with politicians to leech off of productive, non-governmental workers.

I don't ever recall one state or municipal government attempting to engage in open economic warfare with another such government in this fashion. That sort of thing has a tendency to escalate and spiral out of control.

And what do ya know...

Just because we called you racist bigots doesn't mean you shouldn't visit
Some in Arizona canceling trips to S.D.
Outrage over local censure votes may be a misunderstanding[I don't think so]

San Diego tourism leaders and hoteliers fear they could lose a sizable chunk of business this summer from valued “Zonies” who are so angered by elected leaders’ recent censure of Arizona for its illegal-immigration law that they’re mounting an informal boycott of their own.

The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau and several hotels report receiving e-mails and letters from Arizona visitors saying they intend to change their plans to travel here in light of local outcry over their home state’s anti-illegal-immigration stance.

Tourism officials are striking back. In an open letter, they urge Arizona residents to overlook local politics and come to San Diego just as they always have for its mild climate, beaches and attractions. The visitors bureau, in conjunction with the San Diego County Hotel-Motel Association, plans to circulate the letter to media outlets and in advertising this weekend in The Arizona Republic.

The bureau says it has received about 25 to 30 e-mails from Arizona residents reacting to resolutions passed last month by the San Diego City Council and school board, which were little more than symbolic protests aimed at the neighboring state’s lawmakers.

Still struggling from the prolonged economic downturn, San Diego’s visitor industry can ill afford to lose any of the 2 million Arizonans it counts on annually, said ConVis President Joe Terzi.

I don't think it's legal for LA to boycott Arizona or for AZ to cut off power to LA.

Of course, the cutting power thing was tongue-in-cheek. Not so much LA's threats of boycott, a clear violation of the Interstate Commerce Clause.

Cut off their water too.

Already have, haven't they? With what AZ and NV take from the Colorado, aren't there periods of the year when it doesn't reach the Sea of Cortez, e.g. the mouth/delta is actually dry? (I'm sure we have posters living in that area. I'm going by some tree-hugging hippie stuff I once read.)

So, sure.... let's ratchet up the calendar a few decades. Many dystopian scenarios call for what amounts to range wars over water rights, anyway. AZ can cut of NV and CA (bunch of blue-staters there anyway). Then Utah and AZ can get cut off, in turn, by Colorado. (I mean, hell, it's THEIR river, isn't it?) And then we call out the state militia and we have the majority of the southwest in a good old shooting war! It's where we're heading with all this one upsmanship political rhetoric over the past decade.

So y'all go gitcher gunz and get to it. I'll be at the Peninsula having tea, or in Lan Kwai Fong, shopping. It's the Buddah's Birthday tomorrow, and as usual, I have to get him something at the last minute.

Nice to see that cool heads are prevailing

Actually, although I enjoy the sense of humor, it seems a bit reckless. It would be a Bad Thing if the power lines to California became a domestic terror target. I'm not sure it is a great idea to put these kinds of ideas in people's heads around here right now.

I guess we could just sit back and wait for Arizona to actually start building death camps for all the non-whites there. And don't pretend they aren't salivating over the possibility of total ethnic genocide. I can only go by what I saw last time I was there which was more concentrated racism than I had ever encountered before.....granted I've grown up in California.

So don't pretend there isn't some sort of context that this perception of racism is coming out from.

The Colorado River is on the border between California and Arizona. The only way Arizona could cut LA off is to poison the water supply since they aren't in control of the facilities on the California side of the river.
