Between 2001 and 2011 there has been a decrease in people who identify as Christian (from 71.7 per cent to 59.3 per cent) and an increase in those reporting no religion (from 14.8 per cent to 25.1 per cent).

So the non-religious category is not "overwhelmingly the largest" but, instead, covers about a quarter of the population.

Now, it's true that Dawkins had a follow-up survey which suggests that only a third of those who put themselves down as Christian in the census actually believe in the resurrection, but that's not the same as saying that they don't believe in God. I'd say that a vague, wishy-washy belief in "something" that people don't really articulate or think about too much is quite common, although I don't have statistical data with which to back this.

I'd also say that most people in England, at least, would be hard pressed to name most of their acquaintances' religious beliefs simply because it's not a topic of conversation which comes up all that often, regardless of what those beliefs (or lack thereof) may be.

In England here, most of the people I know view Christianity as a personal eccentricity and I have the sense that such a feeling is becoming commonplace.
