"Top medical journal blasts "designer vagina" craze"

One of the world's most prestigious health journals has lashed a fast-growing trend in the United States and Britain for "designer vaginas," the tabloid term for cosmetic surgery to the female genitalia. The fashion is being driven by commercial and media pressures that exploit women's insecurities and is fraught with unknowns, including a risk to sexual arousal, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) says.
Known as elective genitoplasty, the surgery usually entails shortening or changing the shape of the outer lips, or labia, but may also include reduction in the hood of skin covering the clitoris or shortening the vagina itself. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the practice is spreading fast in the United States as well as in Britain, but the picture is unclear, the BMJ says.
Not only is there a disturbing lack of data about the phenomenon, there has been negligible assessment about surgical after-effects -- and almost zero reflexion as to whether a labial "problem" exists in the first place, the BMJ says angrily.
In 2004-5, 800 "labial reductions" were conducted by Britain's state-run National Health Service (NHS), more than a doubling of the figure of six years earlier.

The authors of the article, London gynaecologist Sarah Creighton and clinical psychologist Lih Mei Liao, conducted their own small-scale probe into why women sought this surgery.
"Our patients sometimes cited restrictions on lifestyle as reasons for their decision," they say.
"These restrictions included inability to wear tight clothing, go to the beach, take communal showers or ride a bicycle comfortably, or avoidance of some sexual practices.
"Men, however, do not usually want the size of their genitals reduced for such reasons. Furthermore, they find alternative solutions for any discomfort arising from rubbing or chaffing of the genitals."
Patients who sought genitoplasty "uniformly" wanted their vulvas to be flat and with no protrusion, similar to the prepubescent look of girls in Western fashion ads, they found.
"Not unlike presenting for a haircut at a salon, women often brought along images to illustrate the desired appearance," say Creighton and Liao. "The illustrations, usually from advertisements or pornography, are always selective and possibly digitally altered."

As someone who has her own vagina, I can personally say that vagina diversity has been a civil rights issue terribly ignored by American politics!

Um.

What kind of magazines are they seeing these 'fashion ads' in where you get a detailed look at prepubescent vulvas, anyway?

Jeez, I hate to even utter the phrase, but I'll go for it.(Blame the four day weekend I'm toasting with tequila presently).

"Camel Toe".

Either that or it's all the Paris Hilton/Lindsay Lohan/Tart of the Month's getting out of limos without their undies on.

there are good reasons to have this surgery, specifically after natural child birth. the vaginal rejuvination tightens the vaginal walls and makes sex more pleasurable because of the increased amount of friction. the labia can get stretched or damaged during childbirth and that can cause pain during sex sometimes. I do feel sad for women who have these procedures done for purely cosmetic reasons, but its their body and they can do what they want with it.

Wow, what is the clinical term for "inadequate-friction intercourse"? How can I learn more about it?

A quick sex ed lesson for you:
1) a tight vagina makes sex more pleasurable for the owner of the penis that pokes into it - most women find clitoral stimulation more pleasurable.
2) the labia are the inner and outer lips - they're the stuff that hangs down when the woman stands up. They are not affected by childbirth.
I thought we in the West were opposed to female genital mutilation?

uh I OWN ONE. Really, I dont need a lecture on this subject. The amount of friction matters to both partners, and vaginal stretching decreases it.

but hey since its jref, heres some evidence for ya.

and your last sentance about 'most women' doesnt make any sense to me. what about the ones who dont prefer clitoral stimulation? what if a woman cares a lot about satisfying her partner? What if a woman prefers clitoral stimulation but also very much enjoys vaginal stimulation? I think its perfectly fine to want surgery for any of those reasons. It certainly isnt anyones business but hers.

ugh again I OWN ONE.

yes, yes they are. I dont know how you are picturing natural childbirth, but it basically has to stretch for the baby to exit the vagina. a quick google of "childbirth labia damage" brought back plenty of results, it can even severely tear the labia.

yes, because forced clitorectomies is EXACLY like adult women having voluntary surgery for practical or cosmetic reasons

OK nails, apologise for misgendering you.
I also own a vagina. I also have four children, so I know something about childbirth. And I think there may also be some transatlantic confusion over the term 'labia'. The bit that sometimes gets torn in childbirth is the immediate mouth of the vagina; I thought you were talking about the hanging-down lips in the outer vulva. That's what I call 'labia'. I'm in a hurry right now, so I can't search for the correct terms.
And by 'most women' enjoying clitoral stimulation over vaginal stimulation, I was referring to myself and women I know - unscientific, yes.
Yes, the vagina stretches from childbirth, but can be tightened by post-natal exercises. And the "camel toe" problem can usually be fixed by wearing a pantyliner, not by removing the flesh.
Anyway, gotta go. So apologies for not searching for scientific studies on this.

There's a risk in any surgery, including all cosmetic surgeries. I have no problem with a man or woman who wants their nose to be smaller, for whatever reason, and that could cause problems with breathing....which in my opinion is more important than problems with sex. Some may disagree. Sure, you might end up with a crazy looking vagina due to a mishap, or get an infection and die, but that could happen with any elective surgery, so go for it.

Seems like the article is only talking about the external parts of the vagina, not the inside. I think it's a waste of money though. Unless you're in a business where you show your vagina a lot, who cares what it looks like? If a guy gets so creeped out by how your vagina looks that he doesn't want to have sex with you or date you, he is either 1)gay or 2)not worth dating.

What's wrong with Gucci cootchie?

Since the medical profession has gone whole hog into the cosmetic surgery business, I find this harrumphing little more than eye roll fodder.

Right on, sister, though from the epicure point of view, I suggest that an expansion in flavor would do wonders for the diversity of experience. Double mocha fudge, pistachio, chicken fried steak, Alfredo: these are all flavors that would be very welcomed, but where are those doctors when the time comes to tackle the hard to solve problems?

Once again, we find the AMA in a "form > substance" stance.

I can see getting cosmetic surgery for something really bad that makes you miserable, but I wish people would be more selective over what makes them miserable.

I am not usre, I would hope that all people getting plastic surgery would have some counseling first. Just like they do (supposedly) for the gastric bypass or staple thingee.

I like women the way they are, I prefer my women to not look like men, gosh I can not understand some men finding boyish women attractive.

The mons should be larger in a woman as opposed to girl and the variety is justw hat it is, something to enjoy.

How ever i am a one woman man, I am very happy with my wife and like her as she is.
