I'm not sure what you mean, but my point is that I expect presidents and heads of state to lie to some degree, or not have full disclosure about everything, especially private things like their personal beliefs. As long as they steer the ship in the right direction and don't overstate their authority I just don't see the problem.

I personally don't have any problem with him being of any religion or creed, as long as he doesn't force his beliefs on others or let them effect public policy.

As far as I'm concerned religion is like sex, as long as everyone involved is consenting and it doesn't effect anyone else I don't care what you're into.

I think he's been pretty open about the fact that he became an organizer because of a desire to help unfortunate people, not because of a spiritual calling. And his job in Chicago certainly would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, for an open atheist. So yes, he might have been.

Of course, he also might truly believe. He wouldn't be the first one.

How should I know? But the principle is the same, if the community was predomanantly religious and wouldn't accept a non believer as their organizer, and he really wanted to help his community, then faking belief wouldn't be morally reprehensible IMO, since the only thing stopping him was prejudice about something that had nothing to do with the job itself.

It's a small compromise to do something you really want to do. Who hasn't done that in their life?

I suspect a great number of politicians are actually secular or athiest. It's that despite the constitution clearly stating that there "shall be no (religious) test to qualify for office", every politician knows that if they don't claim to be christian or spout christian platitudes and sophistry ever other second, they have a snow ball's chance in hell of getting elected.

For Obama it's even better for him to claim to be a Muslim than an athieist.

That's an interesting clip, DC, but I hardly see him "mocking" bible myths. Rather he is saying that religious beliefs should not be used as the rationale for legislative or political discourse. Good on him.

Do you understand what "mocking" means? He was pointing out religious pluralism in the US, and then emphasizing that even among Christianity there are several denominational differences that would see at least as much disagreement as between different religions (and this is demonstrable, though he doesn't get into examples). He then goes on to mock biblical literalists and challenges them on which parts of the bible they'd like to be literal about, which in and of itself is a denominational argument I've heard Christian pastors say themselves-- heck, certain denominations openly pick and choose OT phrases they want to stick with, claiming that the rest is invalidated by the "new covenant" or some such.

That clip informs me as to Obama's most likely denominational leanings if we take him at his word that he's a Christian.

I thought his mother was a Unitarian - in which case, it's possible he was at least an agnostic at some point in his life, whether or not he actually is now. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a Christian due to political expediency.
