American Jailed for on-line insult of Thai King

I've read about this sort of thing before. My understanding is the king doesn't particularly care, but the ministers and other folks who actually run the country are rather adament about proper treatment of their figurehead ruler.

I hate to ruin the fun with a serious question but what's the point of being an American citizen if America doesn't protect you from being punished for breaking foreign laws? The "crime" was committed on American soil, so it's not subject to Thai rules.

[But seriously, for a place that calls itself "Land of Smiles" it has a serious sense of humour breakdown when anyone insults the king.]

Thailand always seemed like the prepackaged American tourist's Springbreak version of Vietnam to me.

To someone who wants to hide such things, telling the truth is insulting. I doubt the issue was calling him a troll who smells like cheese. Although I have little doubt he IS a troll who smells like cheese.

Much of this is likely true. To what degree is hard to say, but there's too much smoke in his past for there not to be a little fire or two (or twelve).

Don't you believe it. He's played a marvelous game of pretense over his long reign. All the problems with the Royals in Thailand have always been "some other royal guy/gal" for some reason. All of those meanie royals are real close to the king. Any time anything goes wrong, he picks another son, cousin, uncle, etc... to throw under the bus, so he can be the great hero. But, every coup d'etat, every putsch, every suspension of personal liberties, every curfew.... All have been signed off by the King.

Even up to the current red/yellow fighting, most of the country blamed his wife, his son, his illness, etc.... It was only when people began to notice that he was not doing a damned thing to help his people (unless of course one meant "his people of the ruling classes") that they finally began to realize that he's as big a part of the problem as the rest of them. He got away with a lot of years of this b.s. Not any longer.

Five years ago when he was in the hospital the entire country donned pink shirts because he left hospital wearing a pink suit. Every third person on the streets was wearing pink. This would not happen today. The blush is off the rose for the immediate Royal Family. And the indirect royals? Hell, since all the various kings had about eighty wives each, there's hardly a person in the country that doesn't claim some royal blood. And those that don't have royal relatives pretend they do and don yellow shirts and support the status quo.

He's wanted in Sweden for sex crimes. I don't think it is the policy of most countries to give immunity to its citizens when they break local laws in local jurisdictions, is it?

I think the Dutch government would still accept that its citizens are not covered by Dutch laws on drugs and prostitution if they go abroad.

I'll try putting the other side of the case.....

From a Thai perspective insulting the monarchy is tantamount to sedition. As a man born in Thailand, Lerpong Wichaikhammat (Joe Gordon) would have been well aware of that. Heck, as someone who's only been to Thailand once in my life, I'm aware of that.

The man then returns to Thailand ad is arrested. Let's translate that into UK terms of 20 years or so ago:

  • A UK born person moves to Eire and takes Irish nationality and starts to agitate for reunification and support for Sinn Fein
  • That person then returns to the UK - perhaps to agitate among the large London-based Irish community (remember the red shirt protests, the Thai government is understandably jumpy)
  • That person is arrested, charged and convicted

Is it so silly now ?

Not that I support this kind of crushing of free speech but I can understand that a government which has been subject to large scale civil disobedience over the past year is understandably jumpy when a foreign-based, native-born agitator comes back to the country.

I also understand that it's silly to be quite so protective of a group of very pampered individuals but then again, the United States has a series of laws which protect the flag.

All of this smacks of the child sitting next to their sibling on the back seat of the niggling away. When the sibling finally snaps and serves up a dry-slap the instigator looks innocent and says "what did I do". Reading the article it is entirely conceivable that Lerpong Wichaikhammat (Joe Gordon) was publishing articles advocating the overthrow of the monarchy. The Thais are VERY protective of their monarchy, every Thai-owned business I've been to here in the UK has a little shrine to them somewhere.

No I wouldn't. But in case some day I get to visit the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai province, I figure I better doubt you.
