Abortion Referendum

Who, then should take full responsibility for the full time, full-time in every way, care and nurture until adulthood of the babies who will be born in spite of their pre-birth mother's wish to have an abortion?

To deny a woman the right to have a properly managed abortion and, as a result, be complicit with less safe means is so wrong.

Well, SusanB, what about holding a pillow over unwanted babies' heads? Exactly, so why is it OK to despatch unwanted foetuses?

I met one woman in hospital who had had six abortions, and another who'd had four. What? :(

Put something at the end of it!

What is needed is proper education about sexual health and the consequences of unprotected sex, including STD's and all sorts of nasties.

It is satire, and like many things, good satire (like The Onion) contains a kernel of truth, here being the reference to Recreational abortion enthusiasts.

It is fine if you did not understand the reference, it was subtle.

Well said Susan and shame on you Vixen and The Big Dog for your exaggeration and distortion. So typical of the anti abortion zealots however.

A fetus is certainly not a baby, it is a developing life with the potential to become a baby. A hazardous journey as even today 20% of recognised pregnancies end in miscarriage and it is estimated that as many as 50% of all human conceptions end in spontaneous abortion. Of course in many cases the life form may be little more than a zygote, but one equiped with a soul non the less, according to those great minds in the RCC. If you believe in him God is the biggest abortionist of all.

"Recreational abortion enthusiasts"? There is a kernel of truth is the ridiculous claim that such people exist???

And the fact that abortions are at their lowest levels ever and have been dropping steadily since Roe V Wade fits into the narrative of women getting abortions like Tic-tacs how exactly?

If not liking abortions is your thing, than greater abortion rights seem to be doing a good job of that.

If you believe in him God is the biggest abortionist of all.

And if you are a believer (Thank Randi I am not) you would more tend to believe otherwise
as you believe it does not choose bad to happen it just is too stupid to spot it in time. Thus Nazis, pedophiles , inquisitors, kluxers and related like republickers and fundy religionist tools.

This got me wondering. There seems to be some push back that a woman shouldn't have an abortion for "trivial" reasons, yet to me that is exactly what should be happening. If we have someone who would if they could have an abortion because they are going on holiday in a couple of months and they wanted to wear a bikini on the beach and drink themselves silly, I don;t want that person to have a child!

That's a pov I hadn't considered, thank you.

My vote would already have been for repeal, this reinforces it.

This referendum was held today. An exit poll just released by the Irish Times is showing a landslide for the yes campaign -68% yes, 32% no.

I expect next year the Irish will petition to become subjects of her Majesty the Queen.

I guess there were way more recreational abortion enthusiasts in Ireland than one imagined.

Ironic, because the only part of Ireland where abortion is now illegal is the part where everybody still is a subject of HM the Queen.

Indeed.

Let’s hope the polls hold true and the land of my forebears further distances itself from the moribund Catholic Church.

The Church until relatively recently was able to ban contraception, so I used to smuggle condoms into the Republic for the use of friends, who were "recreational condom enthusiasts". Or, more prosaically a young married couple who didn't intend to start a family at that time. It was not specifically the condoms that they found recreationally attractive.

Why do you think "recreational abortion enthusiasm" and enthusiasm for recreational subjection to the House of Windsor are related? Is recreational royalism like a bondage and flagellation scenario?

But the reality is not that the "recreational abortion enthusiasts" of Ireland desire to become subjects of the Queen: they wish to cease to be subjects of the Roman Catholic Church.

It's also the only part in the British Isles where abortion is verboten. And it's those who cry loudest to remain subjects of the Queen that also cry loudest that abortion must remain verboten in Norn. I wonder how the actual legislation will look like when it comes to reimbursement of NI women who'd then go the Republic instead of to England for an abortion.

Thursday night, Dutch TV had a news item on the referendum, and they had an interview with a woman from Donegal. She was told that her fetus was not viable, but aborting it was not allowed, and going to England was too expensive for her. Instead, she had to check in week-in, week-out in the hospital to get a scan to see if the fetus was already dead (so the doctors could remove the dead fetus). You think that's funny? I think it's really insulting that you try to equate abortion to a hobby like stamp collecting.

Is TBD taking The Onion seriously here? Enquiring minds want to know.
I think it's unfair to think The Big Dog thought the Onion article was serious. I've no doubt he posted it in jest.

What's really funny is that he genuinely doesn't get that HE is actually the target of the satire, and he fundamentally doesn't get it.

It's very good news.
About time women of Ireland got to choose.

Well, I was honestly expecting a much closer result.

Can anyone explain exactly what this "recreational abortion" nonsense TBD keeps mentioning actually is?
