After work on Fridays I enjoy a few beers and a meal at my favorite watering hole here in town. A fundy lawyer used to come into several of the bars in town preaching the gospel and basically telling us we were going to hell if we didn't quit using alcohol. He was kicked out of every bar in town.

I used to hate to see him comming. He would latch onto me like a leech and try to convince me of the reality of God and his plan for my salvation. Telling him I wasn't interested was no help at all. He kept right on talking until the manager told him to leave.

This man had a successful law practise with his fathers firm. He had a pretty wife who was pregnant with his child.

His wife came home and he was lying on the floor apparently dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound. There was no note.

I didn't go to the funeral but I heard that his mother was suffering inconsolable grief. His very pregnant wife kept asking why why why?

Ok so why do you guys think he did it? Did God want him in Heaven right then and there? Was he mentally deranged? What?

It is impossible to know without knowing all the circumstances etc of his life.

Success is not a critera for potential scuicide. It is the persons perception of their success. I recently read an article that upwards of 90% of sucides are driven by underlying mental issues

Whatever drove this poor chap to this conclussion must have been extremely overwhelming. Suicide is universally frowned upon by all Christian sects. It counts as a mortal sin which is usually a free pass to hell

Not leaving a note is exceptionallly unusual as well..............very odd

Aside from the obvious responses which could very well be true, we don't know if he had skeletons in his closet or a secret life he was ashamed of.

He could be out getting gay male prostitutes like that Ted Haggard guy. Or maybe he was cheating on his wife and punished himself out of guilt. Or anything that is secret but also disgusted him.

Is it? And how much does that have to do with areas that figure it must have been some accident if there was no note?

Edit to add

Myth: All true suicides leave a suicide note.

Fact: No, in fact a surprising number of people who complete suicide do not leave suicide notes. According to Canadian researcher Dr. A. Leenaars, who has extensively studied suicide notes, the percentage of those who leave notes varies from 12 to 37% percent.

I dunno, if I were to take my life, I think I'd take the time to leave a note. Probably to the effect of "bwahaha, now you'll never find the hostages." Ought to confuse them for a good couple of years :p

Since his wife was pregnant it seems to me that even if he did have "skeletons" in his closet hed at least stay alive and support his child. Even if he was fooling with men or whatever.

You could look at him and tell something was wrong with him. You could listen to his drivel and tell something was really off. I mean all the "Hey I'm not interested" in the world wouldn't stop his incessant preaching. I think he was insane. I just hope it isn't genetic because of his baby which I hear is due any day now.

No one knows but God. Also, anyone who does kill themselves is psychologically in a lot of pain, ridiculing them for that is not in any way shape or form, OK.

For someone to judge them based on what little information you have, never having lived their life, is rather callous and hypocritical.

In the end God will judge whether he was truly a Christian, and whether or not he will spend eternity in hell or with God. The fact that he was so vocal with his faith bodes well, but I cannot say for sure, since I never heard him speak.

When one listens to the ted haggard's of the world, you could hear that he didn't exactly have the spirit of God with him. Especially some of the things he did like after the Dawkins interview when he freaked out and yelled at him and told him to get off the property.

Depends, if he has a low enough veiw of himself the child will be better with out having such a horrible person for a father. If you think you are trash it is hard to see that others might value you.

Let's at least give him some credit for not taking his family with him.

Wow. Talk about "damning with faint praise."

But you're right- it happens all too often that they do decide to take the family with them.

I'm don't ridicule him. I didn't like him but I wouldn't have had him take his own life for anything.

Me.

I judge him as an obnoxious person because when I told him I wasn't interested in his religious drivel he kept on talking anyway. I judge him as selfish for leaving his widow and a grieving mother. If he was depressed he should have sough help.

In the end God will judge whether he was truly a Christian, and whether or not he will spend eternity in hell or with God. The fact that he was so vocal with his faith bodes well, but I cannot say for sure, since I never heard him speak.

Me I don't think a god exists. Why talk like this to an atheist? I think his religious banter was uncalled for and obnoxious.

Typical fundy reaction to reason.

We give the religious too much leeway when they are acting "crazy". If he had just been rambling on about aliens or the chupacabra, he might have gotten the psychological help that he obviously needed. But because he's spouting off about religion he was ignored until too late.

Well, it could have been something like that...

I hope his family will be able to cope with their loss.

Maybe he didn't kill himself? Do Fundamentalist christians normally have guns?

Does the fact that he was a fundamentalist christian make you think it more likely that he committed suicide?

All the fundies I know are absolutely forbidden to kill themselves by their god so if they did find themselves in such a desperate situation they'd probably look for a loophole like Police assisted suicide, not something as blatant as shooting themselves in the head.

Having spent the last two years seriously--more seriously than ever before in my life--fighting suicide, all I can say is that anyone who does it is likely in more pain than they can bear.

I don't call them cowards or failures. They hurt, and they stopped the hurt the only way that seemed would work. It's so sad, but it's understandable, at least to me. Poor man.

Isn't suicide a "mortal sin" in Christian theology? A sin that will not be forgiven. Do not pass heaven, go straight to hell?

A lawyer huh. All the creationist and ID books my dad used to give me were always written by lawyers or journalists. Two professions in which twisting words and meanings are part of the job description.
