9/11: the musical...

I don't blame you in the least.

I just have a cheesy M3, motor fragged and tube bases cracked. Got it for free, what can I say. It was a good "learner" organ, me having taking piano lessons for years but never being trained properly on the organ. I had it wired through my stereo for monster sound.

One of these days, after I fix my house, like to get a better Hammond. B3, A-100, who knows... so long as it has a full rack of pedals, I'll be happy. Sigh, someday...

Bite your tongue. No Hammond organ is cheesy :P

Speaking of tubes, though, several years ago, I had a difficult time trying to find replacement tubes for the B3 (it's almost 60 years old, after all) and then in a totally random stroke of unbelievably good luck, I found a box full of them at a garage sale that I was able to snap up for next to nothing. Now, this beautiful piece of Hammond heaven is going to last at least as long as I do :)

The sound on mine is (was) good, but it's kinda small. One octave of pedals, two manuals, only 44 keys per. Try playing Widor No. 5 on that...

It is kind of amazing to me that, despite all the advances in electronics, the raw Hammond sound is still hard to beat.

Good point.

I concur entirely. There is something about it that is just as awe-inspiring as it was decades ago. I have to say that I'm especially partial to the unmistakable sound of the B3 and the sheer pleasure that it brings when I hear it on a new recording by an artist - knowing that musicians still appreciate its uniqueness, beauty and quality. It's almost enough to bring a tear to the eye. Almost ;)

Another slice of American (Troofer) Pie

Oh crap, I just got that joke.

Wow, I can be slow sometimes!

Nice work, BTW, sleahead.

And thanks, Mackey. I hadn't heard of New Riders of the Purple Sage but I will check them out. Maybe I have heard one of their song before but can't remember it and now it is all coming back subconsciously!

Ok, here's the song that Mercutio started it all with. (3.9mb mp3)
Sorry it took longer than I expected. It's still not as good as I wanted, but I figure I better put something up here. ;)

Excellent work!

Hey qarnos, that's some cool stuff there. Love the guitar work. :)
I heard a Neil Young quality, too. There's an "on the edge of falsetto" vibrato thing going on sometimes that sounds a bit like him.

Wooo damn hooo!

BEAUTIFULLY done!!!!

Awesome job, you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:bigclap

EXCELLENT!

And worth every minute of the wait!

Thanks, JHunter!

I have decided to take the plunge and record my "It's Like a Religion" (Losing My Religion) song.

This is a plunge for me because I can't sing. In my band I am known as "that guy who can't sing". But, I figure since I will probably never meet any of you guys, I can safely release this under the shield of anonymity.

I recorded the guitar track in one take on my Takamine acoustic. There were some stuff-ups but I hope no one will notice. I wish I had a Mandolin!

The vocals were also done in one take - since I can't sing, one take is as good as one hundred. I used a little bit of reverb to try and disguise my bad vocals.

I have recorded a very short demo of the Killtown song. In fact, it is just half a verse and the chorus! But I thought I would let you guys have a sneak peek anyway.

My American country singer voice turned out better than I expected it too, but my notes are still a bit wobbly on the "Killtown" lines.

This is pretty much a "raw" cut. There is a little bit of distortion, but them's the brakes. In the final version I plan of having some Hammond Organ stuff and other little frills!

You can download the demo as a WMA file or an MP3 file.
I just listened to these for the first time, too.
:yahoo to you, too, qarnos!

jhunter1163 did a great job, eh?

I realized too late that I probably should have used your handle in the file name, rather than just in the ID3 tag as author of the lyrics, or however I did it.

Anyway, that was fun - thanks!

(You also deserve some credit for inspiring all the other great parodies that showed up in this thread from you know who you are.) ;)

I have finished off the lyrics to the Killtown song. Now I just have to complete the music!

I have done another quick demo which illustrates how the intro, first verse and chorus will go. You can download it from here (MP3 only). If you have any problems playing the file in your browser, try right clicking on the link and saving it to your computer and then double-click on the saved file.

NOTE: I haven't dropped the "when she's done there's gonna be holes where there were no holes before" line - it is in the second chorus!

I won't post the lyrics just yet, because there are a couple of lines in there which have been "borrowed" from a couple of well-known classic rock songs, and I plan on holding a contest to see who can identify the band and song first :)

I see we have some hammond organ fans - just be ware that my hammond is a MIDI (SoundFont) hammond. It sounds quite good, but is not 100% perfect. There is no hammond in this demo, however - but there will be in the final song!

Enjoy!

GREAT job, qarnos! What a talented bunch there is around here!

I can hardly wait for the final version.

P.S. I was contemplating having my adaptation of Piano Man recorded. I can record the piano and the vocals and, of course, I'll throw in a Hammond track the Hammond, and mix it on a 4 track machine, but I don't know how to convert it to an internet-friendly format. I have a machine that I believe converts various formats to other formats, but I've yet to use it.

Any advice?

greyleonard,

All three of you did an amazing job! Thanks again!

Yay, jhunter1163!!!
Yay, greyleonard!!!
Yay, Mercutio!!!

It's fantastic! Very well done, all of you. What's the word for using talent, skill and humour at the same time? Whatever it is, you've all done it.
Great stuff. :D

In my spare time between my busy recording schedule (ha!) I decided to create a really poorly photoshopped (actually, it wasn't even PhotoShop) mock single cover for the Killtown song:

Yes, that is me pretending to be Killtown. And yes, I do need a hair cut. I probably should have had the cap on backwards for the full Killtown effect.

Crap! I only saw that cover just now. Qarnos, that's hilarious :D
(or should that be Killarious?)
