It's only a 10,000 page report (probably the largest engineering report ever) by hundreds of experts in the field.
But other agencies and experts disagree. Not to mention NIST was not the major investigating agency, the FBI is.

My understanding is that they couldn't determine from where in the building the steel came from, so there was no point in using it.
Well you understand wrong. NIST's own report states they failed to recover steel from building 7 for testing, but FEMA did.
But they didn't need it to figure out what happened. .
But they did need to figure out what happened that was thier job.
