Merged 8.8 quake in Sendai, Japan

Puppycow, it's likely to stay shaking for a while... that's the freaky scary part. Although the images we're seeing of tsunami damage are pretty awe-full. Be careful -- and get information for where ever you're headed before you go there.

The images are jaw-dropping. Even with all the warnings, I imagine many people have died. It's heartbreaking.

Pretty soon I'm going to have to decide whether to start walking home or wait for the trains, but the aftershocks are continuing so I think the trains might not be running for the rest of the day. They tend to play it safe with them.
 
I'm watching Sky news at the moment: they are saying 8.9.
Some amazing and alarming footage.

8.9 is what the US earthquake people are saying.
Japan's earthquake people are saying 8.8.
 
How many kilometres is it to your home, Puppycow? An hour and a half by train sounds like a very long way. Are you sure there's no alternatives to walking?
 
I'm looking at the map and it looks like 35 or 40 kilometers to my house. It's six in the evening. :(

I hope the trains start back up.

That's way too far to walk at the best of times, let alone at night or during aftershocks. :(

Can you get a hotel for the night?
 
Puppycow, and any others in Japan, please stay safe and look after yourselves. My thoughts are with you. The video of the Tsunami waves hitting is truly surreal - I don't think I've ever actually seen proper footage of a Tsunami before.

The footage of cars being washed away is particularly heart-breaking as I hear these were people trying to drive away, which means they're occupied. I'd prefer not to even think about that.

That's true. I'm more affected by the footage of very big buildings and boats being swept away. They're reporting five confirmed dead currently. I fear what the final number will be.
