I agree with much of what is said in here (although the word "stupid" is in dispute for me - it's just the tag line for the youtube series) and wondered what others thought. Ofc, I won't pretend that when it comes to confrontation and other things that only atheists are guilty of this, either.

(7 min video by Steve Shives)

One thing I do disagree with is his point about being caught in "trivialities". I know many would consider defining terms to be a triviality, especially when it comes to the words atheist and agnostic (I use agnostic atheist and define it as often as possible to make it clear what I mean) but I consider this a very important thing to do both for the discussion at hand and to help others in future discussions to better understand what people mean or be less quick to pretend they understand what someone means by "agnostic" for example.

The biggest problem I have with "The New Athiests" is that so often they behave no different then the Religious believers then dislike so much.

There's no basis for a behavioral difference between the two that I know of. There's no more difference in behavior between your average atheist and your average believer than there is between two different people in the same church (or on the same atheist-related internet forum). I suppose there is a difference in what they do on Sundays, but that's about it as far as I can tell. Our everyday lives are mostly identical.

Not your average atheist; these are New Atheists. The primary difference being that they are made of straw.

This gave me a good laugh :D

I'm not sure what constitutes a "new atheist" but I think in it's simplest way it just means that they are vocal about their opinion regarding religion

Like the atheists picketing funerals? Or all of the atheist suicide bombers?

(Kudos on misspelling "atheist", too. I think it's funny how people who criticize atheism often don't even know how to spell it! :D

To sum up the video.

1. Atheists think they are better
2. Atheists are smug
(1 and 2 seem pretty similar, but I am probably the only one who noticed that.)
3. Atheists argue trivialities (at this point he refers to theists as "non atheists" *groan*)
4. Atheists forget they are a diverse community. This from an atheist in the middle of a video pigeon holing atheist's behavior. I wish all atheists would stop doing this.
5. Atheists prefer debate over conversation. I don't know about that but I sure as **** prefer both over this video.

#3 and #4 are so ironic given the time and effort he put into making this video about trivial behaviors that are exhibited by portions of every group. This could be remade as 5 stupid things about baptists or whalers or biologists.

Soooooo are you claim atheists don't watch football? - I hope you plan to back that statement up:p

A Pew Research survey shows more than one-third of millennials are unaffiliated with any faith, but just 3% call themselves atheists, which seems to indicate a growing indifference to both theism and atheism. In short, neither is an issue, and both are irrelevant. A hopeful sign for the rationally inclined.

No, they go on the internet claiming they have all the answers..........

I thought their primary claim was that theists don't have all the answers.

1. Atheists think they are better

First off, I would love to see the figures comparing the percentage of atheists who think they are better than believers and the percentages of believers who think they are better than atheists.

Second, while I do not consider myself better than believers in general, I think I am better than the 25ish percent of Americans who disapprove of atheists serving on the U.S. Supreme Court. I have no desire to limit believers' civil rights, why should I accept their desire to limit mine?

So confidence in one's evidence based reality makes one "full of one's self". No.

Stating one doesn't believe in gods and other unsupportable beliefs makes one condescending. So I guess we should pretend more that we accepts that theists might be right.

Arguing over trivialities is not a characteristic of atheists, it's a characteristic of people.

Forgetting how diverse atheists are seems to be his own issue. It certainly isn't mine and I would wager most atheists on this forum have a good idea how diverse we are. :p

He prefers conversation to debate. So?

I'm not impressed this guy knows much about those diverse atheists he complained atheists don't know about.
