33 Conspiracy Theories that were true

There's also some weird inclusions like ULTRA and the Manhattan Project. If you're going to stretch the definition of "conspiracy theory" to "every military project that wasn't broadcast to the public ahead of time," then I'm surprised they didn't throw in D-Day while they were at it.

Beat me to it.

And again, I'll ask: in this list of "33 Conspiracy Theories", of the ones that we would agree were historical conspiracies, how many were actually the subject of any "theories" prior to their exposure?

I don't see any on their list.

The Bohemian Grove being on there just cracks me up. How is that a conspiracy, even if you stretch the meaning of the term?

Neither do I. This is the question I ask each time some CTist tries to make this argument. They have never been able to point to one case where the CT mindset actually contributed anything of significance in exposing a real-life conspiracy.

Because they worship an owl and eat babies. Don't you listen to Alex Jones?

This is a conspiracy which may never have existed.

Apparently General Smedley Butler, AKA "The Fighting Quaker" or somewhat less impressively ""Old Gimlet Eye" or "Old Duckboard" had inklings of a plot by rich business men to overthrow FDR.

Did it happen? Dunno... don't really care especially when I heard it was something Gore Vidal obsessed over.

Someone once explained to me that it was the reason why FDR then had Huey Long assassinated or something like that...

Ah that one. I asked a buddy who is an FDR specialist about it and he said, and I quote, "Butler was a nut!".

A lot of lefties obssess over Butler's accusations. That no solid evidence other then Butler's word has ever proving these conspiracies does not seem to work.

I've color coded the list.

Blue: Real Government conspiracy of massive scope and massive impact
Purple: Real Government conspiracy of limited scope and limited impact
Teal: Not a conspiracy, just the government being secretive
Green: Not a conspiracy, just nutbags misunderstanding what the government does
Red: Real conspiracy by private people
Orange: Not a real conspiracy, just humans being douchebags
Brown: Only real in the imaginations of nutbags

1. The Dreyfus Affair
2. The Mafia
3. MK-ULTRA
4. Operation Mockingbird
5. Manhattan Project
6. Asbestos
7. Watergate
8. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study
9. Operation Northwoods
10. 1990 Testimony of Nayirah
11. Counter Intelligence Programs Against Activists in the 60s
12. The Iran-Contra Affair
13. The BCCI Scandal
14. CIA Drug Running in LA
15. Gulf of Tonkin Never Happened
16. The Business Plot

28. Operation Paperclip
29. The Round Table
30. The Illuminati
31. The Trilateral Commission
32. Big Brother or the Shadow Government
33. The Federal Reserve Bank

As you can see they messed up almost the entire thing. I never once had to use blue.

Technically the The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, as venal as it was, wasn't really a conspiracy per say.

The perpetrators had every intention of publishing their findings when they were finished.

I would class this as "Not a real conspiracy, just humans being douchebags"

Also, you can make an argument that Asbestos should be red "Real conspiracy by private people." There was an industry group that funded a number of studies on the health effects of asbestos back in the 50's. They squashed the reports (except for one guy who saved them). this is why they lost so many of the early product liability lawsuits.

BTW if MK Ultra means the Ultra Intelligence in World War 2, to call that a conspiracy is just plain wrong.

And Notice all the Legit conspiracies were done by a very small group of people for very limited objectives..generallly involved with making a buck or covering butts. No massive plots to take over the world.

24. 1919 World Series Conspiracy now we’re stretching it

Ironic they list the Black Sox Scandel because the excellent movie made about it in 1988 "Eight Men Out" had Charlie Sheen as one of the featured actors.....

"Eight Men OUt' is one of the few really good movies Charlie Sheen has made......one of John Sayles' best.

I have a theory ,btw, that working with Oliver Stone so much is where Sheen caught the Conspiracy Bug.

As I posted on another forum:
Conpsiracy: "Hey, we all have similar ideologies, how about we work together to accomplish a common nefarious goal?"
Conspiracy theory: "Hey, we all have different ideologies, how about we work together anyway to accomplish a nefarious goal for one of us?"

One of the very few movies I walked out on. I just didn't care a hoot for any of the characters and I knew how the story ended. I loved the book though.

I only included it as such because there was a conspiracy to keep it secret while the study was ongoing. Kinda a gray area I'll admit.

I wasn't aware of that. I did know that there was a concerted lobbying effort against banning asbestos on the grounds that the alternatives were too expensive that was very effective and kept it legal for many years longer than it should have been. I'm still baffled that it was the preferred option right up until the day it was banned leaving some buildings, like the WTC, with asbestos used only in part of the building. How did those building contractors live with themselves?

Anyone want to suggest some blue type conspiracies?
