2nd successful terrorist attack during Obama's term

And the guy who flew the plane in to the IRS.
He's eligible. I am not sure his intent was terrorism, in terms of making people afraid, but more simple anarchy: strike a blow against the establishment.
And that Milita group of course.
They didn't attack anyone. They were caught ahead of time. So, NOT successful, in any sense.

It's not successful if no-one dies.

Ft. Hood was "successful" but I don't see how you can blame Obama for it.

The underwear bomber was a quasi-success for security because this was Al-Qaeda's best shot in years and it didn't work. Partly because they had to use a kind of bomb that is smaller and harder to use than a classic suicide vest and it didn't work.

The pourpose of a terror attack is to terrorize.

And unexploded bomb still has an effect.

exactly. many NYers are now in fear...again.

I consider any attack that is not prevented...to be successful.

No one prevented the Underwear Bomber and the Times Square Bomber. Luck was on our side, not intelligence.

Those guys are apparantly being released pre-trial.

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts ruled Monday that prosecutors failed to establish that the defendants, members of the Hutaree Christian militia group who were arrested during FBI raids in late March, were a flight risk and threat to the public. The defendants are accused of plotting to overthrow the U.S. government.

This makes me wonder how much evidence the Feds have against these guys if the judge thinks they are not a threat to the public...

You better get used to it. We had many years of attacks from Irish dissidents. We didnt cry like babies and blame our leaders however.

You cannot stop all attacks.

If everyone is fearful and enumerating attacks and whether they were a "success"...

then the terrorists win. Lately we are a mousy, fear-loving people who can't take a little bruising without acting like it's only happened to us.

So far, authorities have been far more successful in wielding the possibility of terrorism like a cudgel to frighten our citizenry.

To be honest I blame the damned 24-hour "news" cycle.

Not on American soil.

Besides, it wasn't terrorism. It was brave minuteman-like insurgents fighting the evil occupying USA. Haven't you listened to Michael Moore?

They were all on American soil. I'm the one who carried them out. On numerous occasions, I attempted to ignite my shoes on airplanes. Often I forgot the matches, but still, I had gotten through security, so that counts as a success. There were also hundreds of times I parked my car next to the federal building a few blocks from home. I intended to blow up the building, but my car bomb never went off. Again, security never stopped me from parking there, so those count as successes.

well, you can't blame people for being a little...concerned.

I live in NYC and was in Times Sqaure on Wednesday night.

am I frightened? nope.

am I concerned? eh...maybe for a few seconds.

the level of sophistication of these so-called "bombs" makes me feel more and more that our enemy is a paper tiger.

Price of an open society. No way to reliably preempt small scale attacks like this without dismantling your constitution. And that probably wouldn't work anyways.

Our "bomber" might have done well to watch the recent Mythbusters episode where the lads attempted to create a propane-tank "rocket". They found it takes a lot of heat and time to make these tanks explode, even if the safety devices are disabled.
And if they do, the resulting blast of pressurized gas neatly puts out the fire...

I don't think it's possible to stop these sorts of limited-scope lone-wolf attacks. Materials are readily available, and if our NYC bomber was hopelessly inept, others might pay more attention in terrorist-camp or pick up an old copy of "Anarchists Cookbook".
One can visit any decent hardware store and pick up the makings of a device sufficiently powerful to cause casualties.

The Times Square attack kinda made me laugh. Is that a success?

Actually, yes, from the standpoint that they defeated all efforts by the government to prevent an act of terrorism. For all intents and purposes, the other side was successful in enlisting someone in their cause, getting him trained, evading authorities during multiple trips between the US and Pakistan, conducting multiple phone conversations without detection, improvising a potentially deadly bomb, delivering the bomb to a location crowded with people, setting the fuze on that bomb and walking away. And in fact, he almost was able to fly away due to the system NOT working. The ONLY thing that stopped this from being a complete tragedy was the incompetence of the terrorist in building the bomb. This is nothing to laugh about or ridicule because that part of the process can be improved by them quite easily. The next time we may not be so lucky and hundreds or even thousands may die. The ONLY way to effectively fight terrorism is preemptively, and unfortunately, those on the left have made that next to impossible with their attacks on virtually every intel program that might have allowed that to happen.

you mean like Propane gas cans`?

You mean I have a bomb on my deck!!!!

And the answer is that those things are designed not to blow up. And it still has now explosives as that is a purely physical and not a chemical process.

If you remember news look up steam explosions. NY has better bombs buried in the streets than this.

Actually, it's your bill of rights that makes that next to impossible, not the left. Are you prepared to dismantle your constitutional order to preempt attacks like these?

I was going to count all of the terrorist attacks Obama allowed to happen on his watch, but then I got distracted by something in the New York City skyline, some kind of absence... and I lost my train of thought.

The underwear guy and especially this guy didn't attack anyone either, they failed bomb making 101 after all.

Yea but that guy had nothing much to do with America. It is not like he got through an American airport.

Well they are nuts enough that the other militias in the area contacted the FBI and worked with the FBI to catch them.

Made you laugh?? What part was so funny to you?

I'm laughing at the stupidity of the bomber. He was commiting his life to some lofty ideal and but could not be bothered to do 30 minutes of research on how to make a propane tank explode. He threw clocks, wires, and fertilizer into a pile and expected them to spontaneously combust. Epic fail.

Sometimes you laugh to keep from crying.
